The Entertainer at Gala Theatre, Durham
Set against the backdrop of post-war Britain, John Osborneʼs modern classic conjures the seedy glamour of the old music halls for an explosive examination of public masks and private torment. Rob Ashford directs Kenneth Branagh as Archie Rice, with John Hurt as Billy Rice in the final production for Plays at the Garrick season.

In A Durham Mining Town
A look back at some images I knew as a child growing up in the coalfields of County Durham in the '40's & '50's.
It certainly was not romantic but it WAS a community - a community sacrificed on the altar of gain - cruelly treated and abandoned post 1985 to create a new Britain - one where community was a dirty word.
In the post 1985 brave new world greed sowed the seed of apocalyptic events a mere 20 years later.
As I see the coal ships filling the North Sea horizon - at the mouth of the Tyne - literally bringing coals to Newcastle - I reflect on past events and how we still live with the consequences.

RSC Hamlet Trailer - screening at the Gala Theatre, Durham on 8 June
Screening live from Stratford-upon-Avon, don't miss RSC's Hamlet at Gala on Wednesday 8 June.
Hamlet has the world at his feet. Young, wealthy and living a hedonistic life studying abroad. Then word reaches him that his father is dead.
Returning home he finds his world is utterly changed, his certainties smashed and his home a foreign land. Struggling to understand his place in a new world order he faces a stark choice. Submit, or rage against the injustice of his new reality.
Simon Godwin (The Two Gentlemen of Verona 2014) directs Paapa Essiedu as Hamlet in Shakespeare’s searing tragedy. As relevant today as when it was written, Hamlet confronts each of us with the mirror of our own mortality in an imperfect world.
In this critically-acclaimed theatrical journey through the Seven Kingdoms, direct from sold out shows in London’s West End, avid ‘Thrones’ fan Graeme just wants to recreate his favourite fantasy saga on stage. Graeme Of Thrones is an original and un-authorised parody on the international phenomenon that is Game Of Thrones. A treat for fans and an introduction for the unenlightened. See it at Gala in Durham City on Monday 13 June before the inevitable lawsuit.
Tickets priced £15 (£13 concession, £10 Gala Friends) are available via galadurham.co.uk, by calling the Box Office on 03000 266 600 or in person at the venue.
