The Galata Museo del mare of Genoa is the museum dedicated to this largest genre of the Mediterranean area and also one of the most modern in Italy. Galata is a historic district of Istanbul, and, until the fifteenth century, home to one of the most important Genoese communities in the Mediterranean. So at the end of the nineteenth century, when the Municipality of Genoa built a district of commercial docks, the oldest of these was given the name of the ancient colony. In the nineteenth century, the Galata already had a history of almost three centuries: in its lower part, in fact, the galleys of the Republic of Genoa were built and the building was part of the Arsenale, the most important military and maritime complex of the city. In the twentieth century, Galata lost its commercial function and was abandoned. At the end of the 90s, the Municipality decided to establish here the headquarters of the future maritime museum of Genoa. Inaugurated in 2004, the museum is housed in the Galata Palace, whose renovation was designed by the Spanish architect Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra. The museum houses, in addition to a full-scale reproduction of a Genoese galley, several interactive rooms in which to understand what it meant, at different times, to go by sea. One of these is the La Merica exhibition that shows the journey of our ancestors to America. There are numerous rooms dedicated to maritime trade and sea going at the time of the maritime republic of Genoa. The museum also exhibits a section dedicated to transatlantic charts with nautical charts and a storm simulation off Cape Horn. Galata - Museo del mare also offers an exhibition hall, bookshop, café with terrace. It is home to activities with schools, also favored by the proximity of the museum complex with the Genova Principe station and the proximity of the Darsena underground station. In 1978, off the Falkland Islands in the South of the Atlantic Ocean, Ambrogio Fogar's boat was probably struck by an Orca or an anomalous wave and soon sinked. Ambrogio and his traveling companion Mauro Mancini manage to save themselves on a raft where they were saved 74 days later, but unfortunately Mancini did not survive. In 2010, 32 years later, the Fogar family decided to donate the raft to the Galata - Maritime Museum of Genoa; the donation was made directly by his daughter Francesca Fogar.

La visita all'interno del Museo si svolge secondo un percorso che muove dal porto genovese del XV secolo per giungere all'età contemporanea, seguendo quattro età della marineria:
- l'età del remo, vissuta sulle galee e nell'antico arsenale,
- l'età della vela, dominata dai vascelli e dai successivi clipper,
- l'età del vapore, che segna la nascita e affermazione dei piroscafi
- l'età delle grandi migrazioni italiane in transatlantico ma anche straniere su imbarcazioni di fortuna.

Galata – Museo del Mare a Genova
Il Galata - Museo del Mare a Genova, situato nell’area del Porto Antico e vicino all’Acquario, è il più grande museo marittimo del Mediterraneo ed è dedicato a sei secoli di storia del mare.
Costituito da un’ampia metratura è disposto su cinque livelli. Oltre a raccogliere materiale inerente alla vita del mare, dispone di diverse postazioni interattive. Ci sono quadri raffiguranti il porto di Genova, modellini di vari tipi di imbarcazioni, mappamondi, carte nautiche, atlanti storici, armi e armature e tanto altro. Un patrimonio davvero ricco. Notevoli sono le ricostruzioni di ambienti, da quello di alcune imbarcazioni (notevole la galea del 1600 al piano terra) agli ambienti delle navi che hanno portato tanti italiani durante l’epoca delle grandi migrazioni soprattutto verso le Americhe.... Memoria e Migrazioni, la presentazione della mostra - Galata Museo del Mare
Memoria e Migrazioni, il terzo piano del Galata Museo del Mare racconta l'emigrazione italiana via mare e l'immigrazione straniera.
Dopo la mostra La Merica! inaugurata nel 2008 e dedicata ai viaggi dell'emigrazione italiana negli Stati Uniti, il Galata prosegue il grande viaggio presentando un' esposizione permanente e dinamica che racconta in 1200 metri quadrati ed oltre 40 postazioni multimediali, molte delle quali interattive, come le migrazioni segnino la società italiana.
L'allestimento attraverso ricostruzioni ambientali ricorda le destinazioni molto diverse degli italiani: quelle urbane, come la Boca, il coloratissimo quartiere di Buenos Aires ma anche quelle rurali, a volte perse nella foresta, come in Brasile, per terminare in quella più nota, Ellis Island. L'ultima sezione, per la prima volta in una sede culturale istituzionale permanente, è dedicata all' immigrazione in Italia.

The Nazario Sauro is a submarine of the Italian Navy, which belongs to the first series of class Sauro, delivered to the Navy on February 12 1980. The boat is named after Lieutenant Nazario Sauro, gold medal for military valor, patriot and member of the Italian irredentism First World War. A galley is a type of ship propelled by rowers that originated in the Mediterranean region and was used for warfare, trade and piracy from the first millennium BC. Galleys dominated naval warfare in the Mediterranean Sea from the 8th century BC until development of advanced sailing warships in the 17th century. Galleys fought in the wars of Assyria, ancient Phoenicia, Greece, Carthage and Rome until the 4th century AD. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire galleys formed the mainstay of the Byzantine navy and other navies of successors of the Roman Empire, as well as new Muslim navies. Medieval Mediterranean states, notably the Italian maritime republics, including Venice, Pisa, and Genoa, relied on them as the primary warships of their fleets until the late 16th century, when they were displaced by broadside sailing warships. Galleys continued to be applied in minor roles in the Mediterranean and the Baltic Sea even after the invention of steam propelled ships in the early 19th century.The galley engagements at Actium and Lepanto are among the greatest naval battles in history.
