Hiking up Galatea Creek to Lillian and Galatea Lakes, a very popular hike. Kananaskis Alberta
June 30/2019 Summer Hike
Today we are in Kananaskis Country, and we will be hiking up to Lillian and Galatea Lakes. The trail is 16.9 kilometers, out and back, with an elevation gain of 870 meters. This is a very popular trail. The hike up to Lillian Lake is fairly easy, with a gradual elevation gain. It is well worth hiking another kilometer to get to Galatea Lakes. The views are just amazing, but the trail is a little harder.

Little Galatea snowshoeing Canadian Rockies
The weather report for the day was 10 cm of snow so when during the morning I saw clear skies, I've decided to head for the Little Galatea. The trail was packed all the way to the turn for Rummel Lake and further there were previous snowshoeing tracks from a group a few days back that made it up to some point from where I also turned around.
Spectacular winter panoramas on a sunny mixed with clouds day, the beginning of the ridge was loaded with cornices, I managed to get to a solid ground point for panorama and photo shots.
Glad to be back in the mountains.
As of now, on the return back to Calgary, another snow storm is going on.

Overnight Backpack to The Lake of The Horns - Kananaskis Country, Alberta, Canada
August 18th, 2019
An overnight backpack trip to the Lake of The Horns with my Canadian friends Martin “Martyupnorth” Belanger and his wife Karen, Evan Robertson aka Chef Evan and one of the Belanger family dogs, Tikka.
Marty was kind enough to offer in the comment section of one of his videos sometime in the past to help me plan a great trip if I was to ever make my way up to the Calgary area. So, when I reached out to request his assistance earlier in the year, he was more than willing. He even wanted to come along. That was more than fine by me. This quick little overnight trip came on the heals of a 5-day trip in the Jasper National Park along portions of what is known as the Brazeau Loop trail. It was an amazing trip and if you haven’t had the pleasure, go watch both mine and Marty’s trips found in our video library’s.
Even prior to my arrival in Canada, Marty was excited to share with his fans the trips he had planned for the 11 days I’d be spending with him in the Canadian Rockies. One fan in particular, Evan Robertson, was interested in showing this Yankee a warm Canadian welcome and contacted Marty while I was in route. He invited us to a meal on the house at Market Restaurant where he is the Executive Chef. When Marty and I arrived at Market we were presented with a fantastic meal. Evan is an amazing and talented chef that also happens to enjoy the outdoors. After we enjoyed the multi course meal, Evan told us of a trip he’d taken recently with friends to the peak of a local mountain where he prepared a not so conventional trail meal using his culinary talents. It was here that a plan was hatched by my Canadian host. Gourmet eating in Backcountry! Marty and Evan have now completed several Gourmet Backcountry Meal trips, but this trip to the Lake of The Horns was the pilot episode. It was so much fun and I’m really grateful for the opportunity to have made an additional friend in Canada. Karen and Tikka were a delight to have on the trip too. I have so many favorite moments from this trip, but the one that captures my overall experience perfectly was also captured on film. When Karen is handed her plated gourmet backcountry meal the smile on her face running ear to ear says it all. What. A. Trip!
The Lake of The Horns is located in Kananaskis Country which is roughly an hour and forty-five minutes southwest of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Upper Kananaskis Lake Trail Hike - One of The Best Views in Kananaskis Country

Micca hiking Galatea Lake in Kananaskis
My four-legged buddy is a real trooper. It was a thrill for her to cross bridges (ten in total according to some websites), jump through big rocks and logs, gingerly walk on the snow-covered ground and finally reach Galatea Lake. When we got to the parking lot it was pouring rain and a little bit of snow. Around 9 am it cleared up and eager hikers started getting out of their car to head to the trail. The trail meanders through the trees along the creek. From Lillian Lake where we took a break and had lunch, Galatea is about another kilometer or so hike. This time it's a steeper, more rustic, more rugged rocky trail. The panoramic mountain vista kept us going even though our legs are already starting to complain. Once we reached Galatea we heaved a sigh of relief. The view is spectacular and even Micca gasped at the beauty of creation. Come join us and enjoy this hike through the eyes of my buddy :)
