Kuakata is a town known for its panoramic sea beach. It is located in south-eastern Bangladesh, and is the number two tourist destination in the country. Kuakata beach is a sandy expanse 18 kilometres (11 mi) long and 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) wide. From the beach one can have an unobstructed view of both sunrise and sunset over the Bay of Bengal.
Kuakata offers a full view of the sunrise and sunset from the same white sandy beach in the water of the Bay of Bengal. Locally known as Shagor Kannya (Daughter of ocean), the long strip of dark, marbled sand stretches for about 18 kilometres (11 mi). The long and wide beach at Kuakata has a typical natural setting. This sandy beach has gentle slopes into the Bay of Bengal. Kuakata is also a sanctuary for migratory winter birds.
On the eastern end of the beach is Gongamati Reserved Forest, an evergreen mangrove forest and snippet of the original Kuakata. When the Rakhines settled in the area in 1784, Kuakata was part of the larger Sundarbans forest. However, the Sundarbans is now at a distance of one-hour by speed boat. As a mangrove forest, Gongamati, like the Sundarbans, offers some protection against tidal surges, however it too is being threatened by logging and deforestation. The best way to reach the forest is by foot or bike along the beach, where a flock of flag flying fishing boats can be seen trawling the coast. Choosing to visit Gangamati in the late afternoon is a perfect time to watch the sun cast shadows on the abstract exposed mangrove roots.
Kuakata is known for its picturesque landscape beauty of panoramic beach, clear blue sky, the tides of the bay bashing on the shore and its mangrove forest. The beach is about 30 kilometers in length, 6 kilometers in breadth and situated at the Lotachapli Union, Kolapara Thana, Patuakhali District. It’s unique as there are no other beaches in Bangladesh where you can witness both sunrise and sunset. Jhaubon (Jhau forest) is an exquisite place in Kuakata which is close to the beach.
Jhau forest is established as a result of initiative taken by government. You can reach Jhaubon by walking from the beach. Jhaubon is covered by Jhau and coconut trees. It’s a wonderful place for observing the sunrise. An Eco Park exists at Jhaubon area which is a fascinating place for picnic or junket. To the east of Jhau forest, there is Gangamati Reserved Forest. So you should visit both Jhaubon and Gangamati Reserved Forest at the same time. Jhaubon is a wonderful place to calm down & very well-acquainted for visitors. Each year, many tourists come here for pleasure.
How to go
From Patuakhali launch Ghat, you can easily get local transport (bus) to reach Kuakata. BRTC bus reaches Kuakata from Dhaka, departing from Saidabad bus terminal. It usually takes about 12 hours to reach there. The BRTC buses are comparatively good. The most prominent bus named “Sakura” costs around 450 Taka, departing every night.
Travel Tips
You’ll find many tourist guides on the beach with motorcycles. They offer trips to various spots near the beach. They carry photo album of the nearest spot from where you can choose your itinerary. You can hire one of them to have motorcycle tour around the beach. Usually they take 200-500 taka for 1-4 hours of ride. kuakata Daughter of Ocean Tourist Spot in Bangladesh
Kuakata is at the southernmost tip of Bangladesh. Locally known as Sagar Kannya (Daughter of the Sea) is a rare scenic beauty spot on the southernmost tip of Bangladesh. Kuakata in Latachapli union under Kalapara Police Station of Patuakhali district is about 30 km in length and 6 km in breadth. It is 70 km from Patuakhali district headquarters and 320 km from Dhaka. At Kuakata excellent combination of the picturesque natural beauty, sandy beach, blue sky, huge expanse of water of the Bay and evergreen forest in really eye-catching.
Kuakata is one of the rarest places which has the unique beauty of offering the full view of the rising and setting of crimson sun in the water of the Bay of Bengal in a calm environment. That perhaps makes Kuakata one of the world's unique beaches.
List of Transports that can take you to Kuakata:
Direct bus route from Dhaka to Kuakata. “Sakura” costs around 450 Taka (US $8.00). It leaves every night at 10:30 from the Gabtoli Bus terminal near Technical Mor. A direct BRTC bus service is also available from Dhaka to Kuakata that leaves from Sayedabad Bus terminal at night takes 12 hours to reach Kuakata. These buses are clean and comfortable. Dhaka to Barisal by large river boat locally known as “Launch”. They leave from Dhaka Sadarghat launch terminal between 6 to 9 PM. This comfortable overnight journey to Barisal will cost around 500 to 700 per person in a comfortable cabin (double is around 900 to 1400 taka). You will enjoy the unique beauty of Bangladesh Rivers at nighttime during this journey. If you prefer to camp out on the deck it’s cost about 120 taka. You will arrive Barisal around 5 to 7 AM but you can get off the boat when ever you are comfortable to leave. From Barisal you have to take a local bus to Kuakata. It’s just 90 km but it takes about four to five hours because of the five river ferry on the road. Buses stop in almost every major villages but they aren’t particularly clean or punctual, but are cheap. The fare costs hardly 50-80 taka.
2-3 hour Bike Ride by the Beach:
If you don’t do this you will miss half the fun of Kuakata. I mentioned about the bikes at the beginning of this article. You can hop on any of these bikes (from your hotel or town center) and the driver/guide will take you to some breathtaking places along the beach. This generally covers Kauar Chor, Lebur Chor, Red Crab Beach, mangrove forest etc. But to me the 15-20 kilometer ride along the beach itself was simply the best. You can truly feel the raw beauty of the nature. If you stop at different spots then it can take around 2-4 hours to complete this ride. A bike can carry maximum 2 passengers.
Tourist attraction place:
Sunrise and Sunset from the Beach-Fatra’r Chor-Gangamati Reserved Forest & Jhau Bon-Keranipara, Misripara & Amkholapara Buddhist temples-Kuakata Eco Park (Kuakata Eco Park is at 2.5 km east from the Kuakata zero point)- Lebur Chor-Shutki Polli

Nature and Life - Episode 238 (Pablakhali Wildlife Sanctuary)
The south east region of Bangladesh is surrounded by hills.
These hills were formed in Tertiary Period.
With time these hills have changed a lot.
Various species of plants have grown in those hills.
A kingdom of wildlife has emerged here based on these plants.
To conserve the biodiversity, a number of wildlife sanctuaries have been declared in this hilly region.
Among those Pablakhali Wildlife Sanctuary is remarkable.
The Pablakhali Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Rangamati District.
The hilly road of Baghaichari upazila of Rangamati has merged with Marissa ghat.
Marissa is sited at the bank of Kasalong River.
Water from this river has passed through the Kasalong Reserved Forest to meet Karnaphuli River.
Pablakhali Wildlife Sanctuary was declared in 1983 which includes the rich forest of Kasalong Reserved Forest.
Total area of the Sanctuary is 42,087 hectares.
Pablakhali is mainly a hilly forest.
Numerous hills are there in the forest.
Plants grown in these hills have made evergreen forest in Pablakhali.
Evergreen forest always remains green.
So Pablakhali remains green throughout the year.
Among the trees there are Chapalish, Gorjon, Telsur, Chambal, Teak tree, Jarul etc.
Apart from these, wild orchids and various climbers are also available.
Climbers grow by climbing the trees.
Various orchids also survive under the shelter of these trees.
Various shrubs spread over the hills like sheet.
Colorful wild flowers bloom in those plants.
The hills become colorful with flowers.
These flowers symbolize various seasons.
These flowers attract various insects.
They fly from flowers to flowers.
Some species play vital role in the pollination of plants.
Various species of bamboo can be seen around the sanctuary.
Bamboo clusters are vital for food and habitat of wildlife.
These plants have increased the diversity of Pablakhali and also have formed a safe habitat for wildlife.
Kaptai Lake is in the south of this sanctuary.
The clear water of the Lake has created a magnificent water body inside the sanctuary.
As a result, the sanctuary is also vital as water body.
From the prehistoric period Pablakhali is rich with wildlife resources.
The forest remain sonorous with the chirpings of birds.
Common Hill Myna, Pigeon, Dove, Drongo, Woodpecker, Barbet, Parakeet, Bulbul, Warbler etc. birds can be seen in here.
Some areas of the sanctuary become sonorous in winter with the presence of migratory birds.
Large terrestrial animal Elephant can be seen in here.
They are the permanent resident of the sanctuary.
They are roaming here from generation to generation.
A number of species of mammals like Barking Deer, Sambar Deer, Squirrel, Monkey, Hoolock Gibbon, Gaur etc. are also available in the sanctuary.
Pablakhali Wildlife Sanctuary is rich with amphibians and reptiles.
Few species of rare frogs are found in here.
Among those Twin Spotted Tree Frog and Cop's Assam Frog are remarkable.
Among reptiles there are various species of Tokay Gecko, Lizard and snakes.
Pythons roam in the deep forest of Pablakhali.
Pythons are large snake of Bangladesh.
Pablakhali Wildlife Sanctuary is playing vital role in conserving these wildlife.
As wildlife is being conserved, the biodiversity of this area is also being conserved.
As a result, Pablakhali is rich with biodiversity.
But due to growing human population, human settlements are being erected by appropriating lands of the sanctuary.
To meet the daily needs, harvesting forest resources and Jhum cultivation in the hills are increasing.
Moreover, wildlife hunting is also going on.
As a result, many of the wildlife are now on the brink of extinction.
If this continues, wildlife like Gaur, Sambar Deer, Pangolin etc. will go extinct in near future.
These animals have already gone extinct from other forests of Bangladesh.
So, apt application of law and development of the management system are necessary to conserve the biodiversity of Pablakhali Wildlife Sanctuary.
Government organizations and local people can play leading role in this regard.
Only then Pablakhali Wildlife Sanctuary will be conserved; biodiversity will remain healthy.

কুয়াকাটায় বাস্তবায়ন হচ্ছে না কাঙ্খিত উন্নয়ন
Kuakata offers a full view of the sunrise and sunset from the same white sandy beach in the water of the Bay of Bengal. Locally known as Shagor Kannya (Daughter of Ocean), the long strip of dark, marbled sand stretches for about 18 kilometres (11 mi). The long, wide beach at Kuakata has a typical natural setting. This sandy beach has gentle slopes into the Bay of Bengal. Kuakata is also a sanctuary for migratory winter birds.
On the eastern end of the beach is Gongamati Reserved Forest, an evergreen mangrove forest and snippet of the original Kuakata. (When the Rakhines settled in the area in 1784, Kuakata was part of the larger Sundarbans forest. However, the Sundarbans is one-hour away by speed boat.) As a mangrove forest, Gongamati, like the Sundarbans, offers some protection against tidal surges. However, it too is being threatened by logging and deforestation. The best way to reach the forest is by foot or bike along the beach, where flag-flying fishing boats can be seen trawling the coast. Visiting Gangamati in the late afternoon is a perfect time to watch the sun cast shadows on the exposed mangrove roots.
