Footage from my first summer with white sharks, 2004, culminates with a snorkel through shark alley, the channel that lies between Geyser Rock and Dyer Island off the coast of Gansbaai / Kleinbaai, South Africa. It was a good first season. There were less rules. Less tourists. Less hype. I was fortunate enough to see many white sharks, a couple of nose-ups, and a grey whale swim past the cage on a day the camera wasn't working. Too bad this was before HD existed.

For all the brave commenters I'll leave one blanket response:
1. This wasn't meant to be suicide, and thus I wasn't allowed to swim in the middle of the channel.
2. Thank God I wasn't allowed. I was young and stupid and wouldn't do it today.
3. It's a sharp and deep drop right next to the rocks. I personally felt plenty vulnerable, which leads to the next point.
4. Yes, white sharks do hunt next to the rocks. Andrew Fox has and others have shared first hand accounts of seeing sharks pursue seals to the point they get caught briefly on the rocks.
5. This was actually quite stupid in retrospect.
6. To those of you who would do it...just do it. End of topic.
