The Garden of Dreams, a neo classical historical garden, is situated in the midst of Kathmandu city, Nepal. The Garden was famous as the garden of Six Seasons which was created by late Field Marshal Kaiser Sumsher Rana (1892-1964) in early 1920. After the completion of this Garden, it was considered as one of the most sophisticated private gardens of that time. However, it was a private garden of Kaiser Sumsher, it was beautifully designed inspired by the famous Edwardian style. Kishore Narshingh, a prominent architect who designed and constructed Singha Durbar in 1907, designed and supervised the construction of the Garden of Dreams. Within the Garden walls, Kaiser Sumsher created an exquisite ensemble of pavillions, fountains, decorative garden furnitures and European inspired features such as varandas, pergolas, blustrades, urns and birdhouses. He erected six impressive pavillions, each dedicated to one of the six seasons of Nepal. These pavillions provided the Garden's architectural framework and lent a cosmopolitan flavor to the formal arrangement of flowers, shrubs and trees. Today, only half of the original garden is in existance.
Garden of Dreams was restored in cooperation with Austrian Government during the period of 2000 to 2007. The Garden of Dreams became a place of peaceful oasis with full of unique architect and varieties of flowers and fauna brought from the different countries. Garden of Dreams has proved itself that we can develop and restore monuments and palaces as touristic junctions which lie dormant for many years.
Garden of Dreams has enthralled the visitors ever since it was opened to their delight. To take things into perspectives, Garden of Dreams is our identity as well as national heritage where we can feel proud. It has improved the quality of life of the denizens of Kathmandu valley as well as the tourists want to spend. It refreshes and rejuvenates the mind, body and soul with its ambience and amenities.
I hope that we can promote the Garden of Dreams in the national and international arena through the significant support from the media. We would like to convey the message that we can replicate this model project to other such potential sites to attract domestic and international tourists as well as can add feather to the heritage of Kathmandu city on the eve of Nepal Tourism Year 2011. The Garden of Dreams today stands as an exemplary work of transforming history into magnificent modern amenity to lure tourists.
We leave no stone unturned to protect and preserve this oasis of peace and tranquility without compromising its sanctity. We are looking forward to adding value to the existing amenities. We are keen to embrace the opportunities to make the garden an icon of rejuvenation amid the bustling and hectic lifestyle of the city. Ministry of Education is also planning to restore its building and gardens when it is shifted to Singha Durbar under the management of Garden of Dreams Development Committee.

The Garden of Dreams, also, the Garden of Six Seasons, is a neo-classical garden in Kaiser Mahal Kathmandu, Nepal, built-in 1920. Designed by Kishore Narshingh, it consists of 6,895 square meters (74,220 sq ft) of gardens with three pavilions, an amphitheater, ponds, pergolas, and urns. From the mid-1960s, upon the death of its patron, Kaiser Sumsher Rana, it lay in neglect but was recently restored with the help of the Austrian government.
History
------------
Located in Kaiser Mahal which is across the street from the former Royal Palace at the entrance to the Thamel tourist area, the Garden was made famous as the Garden of Six Seasons created for Field Marshal Kaiser Sumsher Rana (1892–1964), in early 1920. The Garden, which featured a design inspired by the Edwardian style, was considered one of the most sophisticated private gardens of that time. Landscape architect Kishore Narshingh, designer of Singha Durbar and architect to Shumsher's father, the Maharaja, designed and supervised the construction of the Garden of Dreams.
Within the Garden, walls are pavilions, fountains, decorative garden furniture, and European-inspired features such as verandas, pergolas, balustrades, urns, and birdhouses. Each of the six pavilions, which provide the Garden's architectural framework, is dedicated to one of the six seasons in Nepal. After the death of Kaiser Sumsher, the garden was handed over to the government of Nepal, but it was not properly managed for decades. Today, only half of the original garden remains.
Design
-----------
The formal and axial arrangement of the architectural features stands in contrast to the more informal and natural planting – a juxtaposition consistent with that of the gardens created in England during the reign of Edward VII. Built-in 1920, the garden was remarkably modern in its time, comparable to other garden designs in the first quarter of the 20th century. The architectural sophistication of the individual pavilions suggests that they were inspired by pattern books, with minor local adaptations. Surrounding the planting areas along the path's perimeter are sunken flower gardens with large ponds at their center.

KATHMANDU'S MAGICAL GARDEN OF DREAMS — One Month in Nepal // Day 07
I journey to the beating heart of the Nepali capital, Kathmandu, to explore and experience its many sights and attractions. The Garden of Dreams is one of the best places I've ever been to and the energy of the city is quite surreal; this is a must-see vlog!
After three long and stressful years at University, I've decided to go on an adventure, solo, to Nepal in Asia for one whole month. I'm staying with a Nepalese family that I've never met in exchange for some volunteering with their business. I've also decided to film (almost) every moment and release a daily vlog every, single, day. Having a holiday to Spain with the lads wasn't really my cup of tea, so taking on an ambitious travel vlog adventure seemed appropriate. I leave on the 12th July and I'm making the most of every moment. This is my One Month in Nepal.
SUBSCRIBE to follow my epic adventure to incredible places, historic landmarks, and unbelievable views. New vlogs every day!
