2012 Halifax Seaport BeerFest
Halifax Seaport BeerFest: Atlantic Canada's largest beer festival celebrates it's 7th year in Halifax, August 9 & 10.
Named Festival of the Year in Halifax's FACES magazine, the Halifax Seaport BeerFest: Atlantic Canada's largest beer festival returns for its 7th year. This year the event will take place at the Cunard Centre (961 Marginal Road) on Halifax's waterfront, Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10.
Attendees can sample over 200 local, regional and international beers and ciders at three sessions over two days. The first session is Friday evening from 7 p.m. -- 9:30 p.m., the second is Saturday afternoon from 2 p.m. -- 4:30 p.m., and the final is on Saturday evening from 7 p.m. -- 9:30 p.m. Guests are also able to purchase great beer-friendly food from local restaurants and the new food truck patio, enjoy live local music and overlook the Halifax Harbour from Pier 23.
Special guest this year is Carlow Brewing Company founder, owner and beer expert, Seamus O'Hara. In 1996, O'Hara founded Carlow Brewing Company in Ireland and after spending a couple of years experimenting with recipes and finding brewing equipment, his first products hit the market in 1998. His company was one of the first craft breweries in Ireland and was launched at a time when major breweries heavily dominated the market. Over the past 15 years the company has developed a range of beers and are best known for O'Hara's Irish Stout and O'Hara's Irish Red. Taking inspiration from the international craft beer community, the company has also launched Irish Pale Ale, Double IPA, along with limited editions of Irish whiskey barrel aged beers and various seasonal products.
In 2011, O'Hara co-founded the Irish Craft Beer Festival with Bruce Mansour, co- organizer of the Halifax Seaport BeerFest, and together they have produced several very successful craft beer events in Ireland. As part of the Halifax Seaport BeerFest, O'Hara will host a guided tour for media and be on hand at each session to answer questions from attendees. He will also be the keynote speaker at the Brussels Rare Beer Dinner on August 8. More details on this event to be announced soon.
I am really looking forward to attending the Halifax Seaport Beer Festival which I have heard so much about, said O'Hara. It's a great opportunity to sample lots of great craft beers and to maybe pick up a few lessons on festival organization that we can bring back to Ireland!
Recognizing O'Hara and Mansour's involvement, the event will host an Irish Craft Beer Village, featuring over 25 unique beers direct from Ireland. Specialty pavilions will also return from Ontario, Quebec and Maine. New producers Boxing Rock and Big Spruce are two of several new local breweries committed to sampling at the festival along with Maritime favourites Picaroons, Rogues Roost and Garrison. All will be joined by national brands and European imports to show the quality and diversity that makes today's beer market so interesting.
Tickets for the Halifax Seaport BeerFest go on sale this Friday, May 17th at 11 a.m. Tickets will be available at the Ticket Atlantic box office, by phone at 451-1221 (1-877-451-1221) and online at The Saturday afternoon session is $40 per person in advance ($45 at the gate). Garrison PiLs draws inspiration from several classic styles by blending Czech Saaz hops, German lager yeast and Bluenose spirit to create this crisp, refreshing brew. Na zdravi! (To your Health!)
OL' FOG BURNER
The biggest of all beers, Ol' Fog Burner Barley Wine is an exceptionally mellow and complex ale. It's tawny copper colour and subtle sweet spiciness transcend boundaries and expectations. Suitable for cellaring.

2011 Halifax Seaport Beerfest - Beer on the Pier
Enjoyed a tasting session at the 5th seaport beerfest along the Halifax waterfront. Garrison Brewery helped organize a great event with the Halifax Seaport Market nearby. Close to 200 beers & ciders were available over 3 2.5 hour blocks from friday night , saturday afternoon & saturday night.
Luckily, Premiere Wines, located in downtown Halifax gave me a ticket for Friday night, and that gave me more than ample time to check out Maine & Quebec brewers.
Saturday was spent focusing mostly on Ontario brewers.
Taste of Nova Scotia had a few tents selling food, including scanways.
Lots of IPA beers were around, along with stouts. It was interesting to focus on try as many IPA - you really see now how everyone is a bit different.
Our top beers are the following:
Corne de Brume A L'abri de la Tempete Quebec
Pale Ale AMB-Maitre Brasseur Quebec
Hawaiian Style Pale Ale Spearhead Brewing Ontario
Stowaway I.P.A. Baxter Brewing Maine
Other mentions are:
Tintamarre Acadie-Broue Maritimes
Hell Bay English Ale Hell Bay Brewing Maritimes
Export Ale Shipyard Brewery Maine
IPA Kennebec River Brewing Maine
Vache Folle imperial Milk Stout Microbrasserie Charlevoix Quebec

Quick Beer Review - Garrison & Phillips Brewing Mash Up Belgian IPA
OC and I decided to visit Clam Harbour Provincial Beach and find one of the many secluded beaches to do our latest quick beer review from Garrison Brewing.
This is the first of their mash up series, teaming up with phillips brewing from Victoria, BC.
This is a 7% brew, with a beautiful orange/tan color. At first, it reminded me of the hop yard ale, but the citrus flavors and metallic/spruce finish makes this a smoother beer.
Just including the press release....
HALIFAX, NS -- Garrison Brewing has announced the launch of Mash-Up Series, a new series of beers created in collaboration with other breweries.
The first in the series, Mash-Up Belgian IPA, was brewed on June 24th when Matt Phillips of Phillips Brewing (Victoria, BC) was in Halifax and stopped by the Garrison brewhouse.
From the press release:
Belgian IPA is a seriously hoppy golden strong ale that marries the newer American IPA style with the more traditional Belgian Triple. The two breweries developed a joint recipe, contributing yeast, hop varieties and techniques to produce something truly unique.
In addition to being the inaugural Mash-Up brew, the beer is also serving as a memorial for Colin Allin, Garrison's long-time graphic designer, who died on July 3rd as a result of a gunshot wound suffered during a robbery last month at his home in Nicaragua. A dollar from each bottle sold will be donated to Allin's family to help with expenses, and an annual award will be established in his name at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) to help aspiring design students.
Garrison/Phillips Mash-Up Belgian IPA will be available later this week at the Garrison brewery store, and in select private liquor stores in Halifax. #avoidingchores
