????????????????????????Caucasus: travel documentary (Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia)
The Caucasus is an interesting region suspended between Europe and Asia. It is at the crossroad of the two continents and has a compelling blend of East and West. The 3 republics of Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia have a lot in common, despite each proudly retaining their unique features.
We visited Tbilisi for the first time in Spring 2017 and we soon fell in love. So we decided to come back with a proper adventure. We started off in Baku, a cosmopolitan city whose recent history is intrinsically linked to the oil industry. Thousand of oil drilling machines are scattered in the Absheron peninsula, despite as of today, the main extraction comes from the platforms on the Caspian Sea. Baku urban pattern is a core historical center resembling an old Persian town of the Silk Road. Around this, there is the European city, built in the late 1800 and inspired to Western Europe. And then there is the modern city where old Soviet blocks are being teared down and replaced by futuristic constructions
From Baku, we took the train to Tbilisi, Georgia. Having visited the city the previous year, we decided not to stay in the city center but go alternative and sleep in a hipster hotel built in an old sewing factory. From Tbilisi, we spent a day in the Kakheti region, famous for its wines
We crossed the border to Armenia with a car. The road immediately turned to be more difficult as we followed the route across the Dabed canyon. We chose this way to visit to monasteries, Haghpath and Sahin, of an incredible beauty. It was a touching experience as we were the only visitors
In Yerevan we had the opportunity to meet Naregh, on old schoolmate of Valentina, who decided to move to Armenia about a year ago. We spent a day with him and he told us about the recent Velvet Revolution and what to expect in Armenia. On the same day, we met with Yun and Nonno, who will be travelling with us for about a week
Armenia has two incredible assets to offer to visitors: beautiful UNESCO monasteries and amazing landscapes. But it is not only that. Yerevan, which at first sight seemed quite uninspiring, turned to be an extremely lively city after dusk and at night, when it seemed that the entire Armenia was walking on the streets and enjoying the warm Summer nights
In one of the visit to the monasteries, we met Giorgio, a student from Italy with Georgian origins. He is fond of Caucasian architecture, and was impressive to hear from him the various features and characteristics of the Armenian monastery. We gave him a ride with the car and visited a few places with him
Crossing the border with Georgia was necessary to complete our coast-to-coast. We stopped in Vardzia, an ancient cave city and visited the fortress of Khertvisi. Both placed in an incredible canyon. Breathtaking
The next stop was Batumi, on the Black sea. A sort of Soviet version of Atlantic City, Batumi was not our cup of tea. We much preferred the city of Kutaisi, where we enjoyed the local market, the cathedral and the nearby monasteries of Gelati and Motsameta
In Kutaisi we left Nonno and Yun. They head north to visit the remote region of Svaneti. We had to go back, but before reaching Tbilisi, we stopped in Gori, the hometown of Josef Stalin, and Uplistikhe, another cave city near Gori

A Tourist's Guide to Baku, Azerbaijan 2018
From Tbilisi we fly into Baku, located along the Caspian Sea. Staying the Fairmont 'Flame' Tower Hotel affords us an excellent view of the long sweeping city coastline.
In the city, we see the giant flag, walk past the carpet museum, see the twists and turns of the old medieval walled town, which included the magnificent Maiden Tower. We catch a metro to the Heydar Aliyev Centre, and then walk back, stopping off at the sprawling central market.
All in all, Baku is a pleasing mix of new and old, mixing glitzy modern skyscrapers with ottoman architecture.

Baku, Capital´s Azerbaijan [IGEO TV]
Azerbaijan, known as Land of Fires, its economy is based on oil crude and natural gas reserves. Its capital, Baku, 'City of Contrasts', contains a wide variety of architectural styles.
The fortified city was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 2000, highlighting the 11th century Maiden Tower.
The Flame Towers, built in the form of tongue of fire, look red at night, and they illuminate Baku in homage to oil.
Absolutely impressive mixture of modernity and design, it became an important city for investors. In 2015, it will begin the construction of the Azerbaijan Tower, surpassing the record that Burk Khalifa, in Dubai, have today, being the tallest building in the world, and forming part of the residential complex Khazar Islands to be raised on an artificial archipelago in the Caspian Sea.
In this video, the viewer can see main architectures of Baku, knowing also the future projects that will take place in the city.

BAKU - 1st European Games | Welcome to Baku, Azerbaijan
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Google+, Tumblr.»

Baku.

Baku: The City of Ali and Nino | Trailer | Available Now
A fascinating look at the history of the magnificent city of Baku, Kurban Said's city of 'Ali and Nino'.

At turn of the 20th Century Baku was an astonishing place. An outpost of the Russian Empire on the Caspian Sea, its newly-minted local and foreign oil tycoons had transformed the city from a sleepy oriental trading-post in the desert into a throbbing international city. A bloody revolution resulted in a brief shining period of democracy before it was crushed by the Bolsheviks. Baku’s history has imprinted a colourful tapestry on this city.

“I went up to the flat roof, from there I could see my world. The massive wall of the town's fortress, Arabic inscriptions at the gate. Inside the wall the streets were narrow and curved, like oriental daggers. Minarets pierced the mild moon. Through the labyrinth of streets camels were walking, their ankles so delicate I wanted to caress them”, says Ali Khan as he looks over the glorious city of Baku.
In 1970, writer Paul Theroux discovered a lost treasure, Kurban Said’s epic love story Ali and Nino. Their love breached class, religion, and ethnicity and documented Baku’s most tumultuous period. Built on the philanthropy of its oil tycoons, Baku at the turn of the century was “like a mixture between medieval Baghdad, Al Capone’s Chicago, and the Paris of the east. It was literally the most extraordinary place. An irrepressible, exciting, fascinating, cosmopolitan kaleidoscope”, says historian Simon Sebag-Montefiore.
But with wealth came inequality. Life was bleak for the oil workers living in the so-called, ‘Black City’. Crime was rife, and the place was alive with the sparks of revolution. As events in the world began to turn, and the great powers were exhausted by war and revolution, the local forces in Baku made their moves. As different ethnic groups fought it out the city suffered. But in September 1918 secular and progressive Azeris were able to proclaim the birth of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan. “Calling this territory Azerbaijan for the first time was very important for national identity. At last people thought of themselves as masters of their own land”, says historian Irada Bagirova.
For almost two years democracy flourished, before it was cruelly and viciously extinguished by the Bolshevik thirst for Baku’s oil. With the fall of democratic Baku, Ali and Nino’s love was extinguished. “The life of our republic has come to an end, as has the life of Ali Khan”, wrote Said, as Ali fell on the battlefield, defending his home.
Under Soviet control for 70 years, Baku is now rediscovering its former glory as it draws on its position as the bridge between east and west, and its rich and varied history.
