Moltke Wreck - Geoffrey Bay - Magnetic Island
A compilation of footage taken snorkelling/freediving around the Moltke wreck in Geoffrey Bay.
Footage taken with a Garmin Virb XE action camera mounted on a hiking pole.
The Moltke wreck is in 5 to 10m of water and is a feature of the Geoffrey Bay Snorkel Trail.
The Moltke was a three-masted barque built in Hamburg, Germany in 1870. The vessel was wrecked off the coast of northern Queensland, Australia in 1890 before being refloated. In 1911 the vessel was scuttled with the intent to protect the jetty then located in Geoffrey bay (url:

Alma Bay - Magnetic Island - Townsville QLD
Alma Beach is one of the easiest to access beaches on Magnetic Island. You can find accomodation very close and there is a pub near by for food and refreshments and if you wait around until dusk then its easy to duck around to Arcadia to feed the Rock Wallabies.
The rock formations on Magnetic Island are truely amazing and every beach has its own signature arrangement that makes it distinguishable to locals and those with a keen eye. The sedimentary layers and texture in the beach sand give Magnetic Island a jurassic vibe.

The City of Adelaide was a passenger steam ship launched in 1863 in Glasgow, Scotland. The vessel was later converted to a Barque for use as a cargo transport. In 1912 the vessel was gutted by fire, and in 1916 the burnt hulk was run aground in Cockle Bay, Magnetic Island, Australia - approx. 8km (5 miles) from mainland Townsville, Queensland.

Hidden beaches in Magnetic Island AUSTRALIA || backpacking east coast
It only takes 25 minutes on a ferry from Townsville to arrive in paradise. Magnetic Island's relaxed tropical lifestyle, quiet, secluded beaches, rugged nature, abundant wildlife and easy access to the Great Barrier Reef make it a wonderful place to relax and unwind.
Magnetic Island sits within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, but the landscape here is different to the usual tropical rainforest found on many of the Great Barrier Reef islands. About 275 million years ago, nature's forces created an extraordinary landscape of rocky terrain and giant boulders. Magnetic Island has less rainfall than the Wet Tropics to the north and the Whitsunday Islands to the south. Its climate is typical of the dry tropics and it is covered with eucalypt woodlands.
The traditional owners of Magnetic Island, the Wulgurukaba Aboriginal people, have inhabited the island for thousands of years. They call the island Yunbenun. Shell middens, stone tools and art sites are physical reminders of their strong connection with the island. Magnetic Island was named by James Cook in 1770 when the island appeared to affect the magnetic compass on his ship.
The main areas of Magnetic Island are Horseshoe Bay, Arcadia Bay, Nelly Bay and Picnic Bay.

Picnic Bay isn't just a good place for a picnic, you can go fishing, walk the tracks into the surrounding hills, or just chill on the beach. There is a pub at Picnic Bay too!
We went for a stroll down the jetty to see if the fishermen had caught anything and a massive hawk decided to join us! ???? The Mavic wouldn't have had a chance if he had a go at it!
