Georgia Peanut Commission New Headquarters Almost Ready
The Georgia Peanut Commission was established 51 years ago to conduct promotion, research and education programs and to represent the state's peanut farmers. They will soon have a state-of-the-art building just off Interstate 75 in Tifton. The Monitor's Rick Treptow gives us a sneak peek.

In celebration of their 50th anniversary, the Georgia Peanut Commission recently cut the ribbon on their new headquarters building in Tifton. The monitor's Rick Treptow gives us a look at the new facility, which is the first net-zero energy state office building.
PLAINS, PEANUTS & A PRESIDENT
The fourth weekend in September is a big day in south Georgia. It is the annual Plains Peanut Festival saluting Plains, Peanuts and a President. Jimmy Carter. our 39th president, hosts this event and welcomes hundreds of visitors to his home town for a great day of fun, food, and frolics. He was known as the Peanut President and reminisces about his early days in the peanut business at the age of 5 years old. GEORGIA PEANUT BANK WEEK
Georgia Peanut Bank Week, sponsored by the Georgia Peanut Commission and the Georgia Bankers Association, was celebrated the week of October 10 - 14. Colony Bank of Warner Robins was one of more than 400 Bank and financial institutions across the state that participated and offered peanuts, peanut candy, cakes and cookiers to their customers. The event paid tribute to Georgia's peanut farmers for the contributions they make to the state and local economy
PLANTING PEANUTS IN GEORGIA
Georgia peanuts are planted in late April thru May and require sunshine, adequate rainfall and proper fertilization to produce a healthy crop. Digging of the crop begins in late September thru October. Two or three days after digging, when the peanuts have been dried by the sun, a huge combine rolls over the fields scooping up the peanuts, placing them in a bin on top, and then pouring them into wagons to be taken to a nearby buying point. There the farmer receives a check for his peanuts.

GPC GROUND BREAKING CEREMONY AUGUST 1, 2011
The Georgia Peanut Commission held a ground-breaking ceremony on Monday, August 1, 2011 for it's new state headquarters building in Tifton, Georgia. The facility will be located in full view of I-75 which offers more than 60,000 impressions per day. Construction should be completed in 12 months during the Commission's 50th anniversary celebration.

Georgia's Senior Senator Saxby Chambliss held two Farm Bill forums on March 16 in Jesup and Tifton, Georgia. The Senator wanted to discuss Farm Bill prospects with farmers and to hear from them on issues relative to the Farm Bill. He was introduced by Gary Black, Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture, who said that finding a solution to the immigration issue is not only important to farmers to each and every consumer in the country.

Educational Center Shares Story of Georgia Peanuts
The 2017 peanut season is officially over, but the demand for Georgia peanuts never goes away. It’s because of that demand that a new education center in Tifton is teaching people about peanuts and Georgia’s status as the crop’s #1 producer. The Monitor's John Holcomb explains.
