The German Girl Shrine, Pulau Ubin, Singapore, 15-3-12
A look around the German Girl Shrine (Schrein des deutschen Mädchen, Nadu Guniang Shrine), Pulau Ubin, Singapore, 15 March 2012.
Acording to local oral history, there was a German coffee plantation manager who lived in Eastern Pulau Ubin. A Chinese cemetery near there, further up Jalan Wat Siam, is still called Bukit Coffee Chinese Cemetery. The planter had a wife (who some say was Malay) and a beautiful daughter. In August 1914 when Britain entered World War I, British soldiers came to inter the German family. Frightened, the German girl ran away and tried to escape into the night but fell down a cliff and died. Boyanese plantation workers found her body the next day covered in ants, and buried it in the sand, laid flowers there and said prayers and burned for her. Some Chinese who saw her ghost then reburied her at the top of the hill.
After the war the German family was released but due to language difficulties, was unable to find out where their daughter was and returned to Germany. The German girl became a local Chinese diety and they worshipped at her grave. When the land was taken over by a quarry and the quarrying extended towards her grave in 1974, they exhumed her remains - a bit of hair and bone and a crucifix, and put them in an urn and built a shrine for her. They called her Na du Gu niang, nadu being the Chinese transliteration of the Malay datuk (search for Na Tu Kong for more info on datuks), and gu niang meaning maiden.
Some time later the urn with her remains was stolen so an empty replacement urn now stands there in its stead. Worshippers bring her offerings of cosmetics.

Pulau Ubin German Girl Ghost
The team investigates Pulau Ubin in our debut episode. They start the investigation at Jelutong Bridge and they visit the infamous German Girl Shrine. Will they gather evidence to back up claims that Ubin is haunted?
German Girl Shrine
An urn in an obscure Pulau Ubin temple, said to hold the remains of WWI German Girl, has been attracting devotees since the 1930s. They call her the German Girl, or Nadu Guniang. She is dead - and has been dead for more than 80 years. They pray for health, they ask for ToTo and 4D numbers, and the story began even before Cheng, the caretaker of the shrine, was born.
The Film is shortlisted for Singapore Media Academy (SMA), 16th DigiCon6 Asia Competition and has won the Crowdtivate Audience Choice Award. Thanks for your support!

German Girl Shrine [HD]
There is a Chinese shrine on a remote island (Pulau Ubin) off Singapore, dedicated to a German girl, or the Nadu Guniang. She is dead - and has been dead for more than 80 years. A trickle of devotees on the island - and across the sea from Singapore - still meander round to the obscure spot to pay their respects regularly. Folklore has it that this girl tragically fell to her death in her attempt to escape from the British who had rounded up her family during the outbreak of World War 1. Subsequently some villagers found her body and buried her on top of a hill.
