GREECE Crete - The German war cemetery of Maleme
At an war , all sides are the loosers ...
The German cemetery is near Maleme airport on the north coast of Crete, 20 km western of Chania city and one kilometer above the village of Maleme. From here one can see far into the deep blue bay of Chania. The basic idea of the memorial was to design the graveyard for the fallen soldiers according to the four main battle grounds of Maleme, Chania, Rethymnon and Heraklion.
The cemetery was founded in 1974 by the former German commander Gericke. At this area are buried 4.465 German soldiers who lost their lives in the island of Crete most of them were paratroopers who died during the invasion with the code name Mercury.
The care of the cemetery is done by the “The German Graves Commission” (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge eV), a private association based in Kassel, ordered by the German government. The association has taken care of such cemeteries across the world.

German War Cemetery (Deutscher Soldatenfriedhof) in Glencree, Co.Wicklow
The Deutscher Soldatenfriedhof - or German War Cemetery - is one of the true surprises of Co.Wicklow.
I remember the first time I came across when about 20 years ago. I was fascinated by the idea of these young men interred here in Ireland, so far from Germany.
Apparently most of were airmen who crashed or drowned sailors washed ashore. It is a truly beautiful place, full of greenery, with a river running by it.
Not such a bad place to end up.

German military cemetery in Maleme Crete /

2. SOUNDBITE (English) Kenneth Lans, British Veteran:
As far as the Germans are concerned, and as far as the Italians are concerned, I can live with those because Hitler paid with his life and up to a point so did the German people. Mussolini was hung up upside down on a lamp post after he was killed or whatever it was. But I have no sympathy with the Japanese because Hirohito never apologised for the troubles and experiments in Manchuria. Never bothered to explain it. (audio inaudible at the end)

7. SOUNDBITE (German) Alfred Loschert, German Veteran:

9. SOUNDBITE (German) Erich Hasenstab, German Veteran:
I came here to remember the many young people who lost their lives here. I was also here and was lucky. A school friend of mine is also buried here. Just like me he was eighteen at the time. One is close to tears but how does that help? All these beautiful flowers but that can't really help.

STORYLINE:
A commemorative ceremony took place on Friday at the German war cemetery of La Cambe in Normandy, where more than 21-thousand German soldiers have been buried.
The soldiers were the casualties of what is described as the largest military operation ever and known as Operation overlord.
About two hundred people from France, Britain and Germany took part in the memorial at La Cambe on Friday.
With music and poetry they remembered the victims of the battle sixty years ago, but also underlined the value of peace in Europe since the end of WWII.
German veteran Alfred Loschert told APTN: One of ours (parachuters) were killed and then we started to withdraw and to fight.
A group of German Army reservists were also present and told APTN they had come to Normandy this year because this time it was a liberation ceremony, not a victory ceremony.
About 20,000 people, including 8,000 veterans, will attend many of the 16 official ceremonies in Normandy this year and as many as one (m) million people are expected for a series of other commemorations around the region.
German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has been invited to take part in the ceremonies commemorating the 60th anniversary of the D-day landings on Sunday.
It will be the the first time a German leader will be involved in D-Day celebrations.
La Cambe is the largest German war cemetery in Lower Normandy.
In a clearing dotted with trees and Maltese crosses in groups of five, more than 21,200 soldiers are buried - generally in twos - beneath small slabs almost flush with the short grass.
In the centre, an impressive tumulus, surmounted by a large cross flanked by statues, marks the place where the remains of 296 unidentified soldiers were buried.

In May 1941, the Commonwealth force in Crete was organised in five widely separated defence areas along the north coast - around the three airfields at Iraklion, Rethymnon and Maleme, and at Suda Bay and the port of Chania. The Germans launched their attack on 20 May with airborne troops. The airfield at Maleme was quickly captured and used for landing German reinforcements. On 23 May, the remainder of the Maleme position had to be given up and its defenders fell back to Chania. On 26 May, the Allied line west of Chania was broken. Suda Bay became indefensible and the troops from these two positions, with the remainder of the Maleme garrison, withdrew across the island to Sfakion, where many of them were evacuated by sea on the nights of the 28 - 31 May. The airborne attacks on the Iraklion and Rethymnon positions on 20 May were repulsed. Iraklion was successfully defended until the night of 29/29 May when the garrison was evacuated by sea. Orders for the Rethymnon garrison to fight its way southward for evacuation did not arrive, and it was overwhelmed on 31 May. Of the total Commonwealth land force of 32,000 men, 18,000 were evacuated, 12,000 were taken prisoner and 2,000 were killed. The site of Suda Bay War Cemetery was chosen after the war and graves were moved there by 21st and 22nd Australian War Graves Units from the four burial grounds that had been established by the German occupying forces at Chania, Iraklion, Rethymnon and Galata, and from isolated sites and civilian cemeteries.
There are now 1,500 Commonwealth servicemen of the Second World War buried or commemorated in the cemetery. 776 of the burials are unidentified but special memorials commemorate a number of casualties believed to be buried among them. The cemetery also contains 19 First World War burials brought in from Suda Bay Consular Cemetery, 1 being unidentified. There are also 7 burials of other nationalities and 37 non-war burials.
Crete: Island of Heroes
A photo montage of the German Airborne Invasion of Crete in 1941
Crete became the graveyard of the vaunted German fallschirmjagers or paratroopers. These photos are from the documentary The 11th Day
Germans had never encountered the extent of civilian resistance that they encountered on Crete. Retribution was swift. The German High Command wanted to break the spirit of the populace and do it quickly. In this they failed and failed miserably. In retaliation for the losses they incurred, the Nazis spread punishment, terror and death on the innocent civilians of the island. More than two thousand Cretans were executed during the first month alone and twenty five thousand more later. Even in the face of certain death while standing in line to be executed, Cretans did not beg for their lives. This shocked the German troops. Kurt Student, the German Paratrooper Commander who planned the invasion, said of the Cretans, I have never seen such a defiance of death. General Alexander Andre, the German Commander of the Occupation Forces was amazed and said: The courage of the Cretan facing the firing squad is legendary. Cretans turn into mythical figures. They are so proud of their moment of death that one can hardly fail to admire their courage. When executions were to take place I would leave my desk and walk out onto the balcony to watch their moment of death. Nowhere else have I witnessed such love of freedom and defiance for death as I did on Crete.
