Chania, Crete is an amazing old town, that’s rich with culture, and has some seriously delicious Greek island food to discover. In this video, you’ll find some of the must-eat restaurants and street food stalls to try, if you love to eat, when you’re in Chania, Crete!
Here are all the places featured in this Cretan food tour of Chania:
Μπουγάτσα Χανίων - For breakfast there’s no better place in Chania to get started than this local spot that specializes in bougatsa, and amazing cheese filled pastry. You can eat it with or without sugar, both was delicious, but I liked it without sugar.
Total price - 5.40 EUR for 2
Oasis - For street food, this is about as good as Greek food gets. Oasis is a local gem that serves Cretan Greek gyro pita, a spit of pork that revolves and slow cooks. When you order, you get pita, filled with gyro meat, seasoning and tzatziki to top it off. It’s outstanding.
Gyro pita - 2 EUR each
Old Chania Market (Agora Market) - One of the many best things to do in Chania, Crete, is walk around the Old Chania Market, especially if you love to eat. I chose to eat at a restaurant called Αγαπήνης Οινομαγειρείο, that serves traditional Cretan food. It’s a market atmosphere, and the food is outstanding.
Total price - 21 EUR for everything
Attractions in Chania - Agios Nikolaos, Chania Promenade, Lighthouse - In the afternoon I did some sightseeing in Chania, which is a very charming town. I would highly recommend taking the walk out to the end of the lighthouse. The views are spectacular.
Thalassino Ageri Restaurant - For dinner in Chania, we walked over to a restaurant called Thalassino Ageri Restaurant a legendary Greek seafood restaurant, along the coast, in an area of town with abandoned buildings. The setting is superb, and they offer a variety of seafood, including fresh fish catch of the day. We ordered a bunch of seafood, and enjoyed the gorgeous environment.
Total price - 74.90 EUR

Chania, a Beautiful Port Town on the Greek Island of Crete
Chania is a beautiful port town on the north west coast of the Crete, with an atmosphere reflecting its Venetian and Turkish past.
Chania and the long row of beach resorts stretching 20 km west along the beaches of the Chania bay is a well visited destination for European charter trips. The city of Chania is an attractive destination for sightseeing and shopping for many tourists. Here is plenty of opportunities for eating and drinking on Greek tavernas and modern cafés that are open into the night.
The old town is centered around the harbor, it is a maze of alleys and houses that has been standing for many hundred years rebuilt, ruined and built up again with details from the different epochs. Old town is full of souvenir, art and crafts shops; the new quarters house the regular span of shops, here you can find the most of your needs for the hiking or other adventures. The beaches begin in the city a bit away but not far from the old town. Nearest one is Nea Hora, a 1 km walk from the west end of the Old Town.
If you are on Crete to see the 'real Crete', as opposed to the night clubs for tourists, then visiting the villages around Chania is a must. All Cretan culture can be seen, heard and tasted in the villages. All villages have a central coffee shop (the 'kafenion') which is where all people eventually end up. The kafenion, apart from being a place to meet friends for a coffee or a game, is used as the main information center of the village.

The beaches west of Chania - Saverio Pepe
A long sandy beach stretches to the West of Chania for many kilometres. Once almost uninhabited, this part of the coast has become the main tourist concentration in western Crete. The communes (they really cannot be called villages) of Stalos, Agia Marina and Platanias form a long succession of hotels, apartments, eateries, bars and tourist shops. The beaches are good but can be crowded.Platanias and Gerani are two towns that have become very developed because of their excellent beaches and their proximnity to Chania and are the most popular resorts on the western part of Crete. Across is the island of Agios Theodori which was heavily fortified by the Venetians in 1574 to keep the Turks from being able to land their ships at Platanias. Later it became the headquarters of General Timoleon Vassos in 1897 during the war of Independance from the Turks. Now it is a breeding center for the kri-kri, the wild Cretan mountain goat. Near the beach resort of Maleme where much of the fighting took place during World War Two is the German Military Cemetary which contains some 4000 graves, most of whom were the parachutists who were shot from below during the Battle of Crete. Inland is a vast area of agricultural villages, rivers, streams and hills. Just beyond the town of Kolimbari at the base of the rugged Rodopou Peninsula is the Monastery of Gonias, completed in 1634 and home to a collection of post Byzantine icons of interest to anyone with an interest in religious art, or any art for that matter. Further north in the village of Rodopos is a Venetian Villa. To continue north to the ruins of the Roman Sanctuary of Dyktina in the bay of Menies you may want to have a 4-wheel drive vehicle or a very understanding car rental company. But at the end of a rugged road the beach is worth it and is one of those places you can probably pitch a tent and nobody will bother you. An added attraction is the ancient Temple of Diana on the hill. For those not venturing so far north in the small village of Afrata is a wonderful little village taverna called Kali Kardia (Good Heart) run by Konstantinos Rethemiotakis where he and his wife cook and serve what will probably be the best traditional Cretan food you will find on the island.
