So, here we have Part 3 of our Japanese holiday tour of Central Honshu. We take the Shinkansen, and The bullet train does not disappoint! What a fantastic way to travel, this was a big thrill for me!
On arrival in Takayama, a city 1900ft in the hills, we head for dinner in a traditional Japanese restaurant - YUM!
Next day we have a walking tour of Takayama's hi-lights. This place is a photographers paradise, so I'm snapping away like crazy. The buildings are beautiful and so atmospheric and well, so Japanese! Sadly by early afternoon, it starts to rain again, but I keep on shooting, often under an umbrella! We enter the Festival Float museum, but have missed the the spectacular procession by about 10 days sadly!
Anyway, Part 4 will feature the Gassho-style houses of Shirakawa-go, a Unesco World Heritage Site. However, the weather, once again, is not looking good!

Exploring Shiga, Japan｜Day 61 - Shiga
Shiga is a Japanese prefecture to the east of Kyoto, on the island of Honshu. It contains the enormous freshwater Lake Biwa, whose shoreline is home to the regional capital, Otsu, the cities of Hikone, Sakamoto and Nagahama, beaches and holiday resorts. To the northeast, 4,000-meter Mount Ibuki can be climbed for far-reaching views over the water.

Japan Day 8: Hiroshima
A journey to Hiroshima city is a truly humbling and retrospective experience. Once predicted to remain void of life after the bomb blast, Hiroshima has blossomed into an international icon of peace and renewal. Our trip began with a walk around the International Peace Park, followed by an emotional visit to the Memorial Museum, which instilled in us a deeper regard for respect, compassion and peace.

10. Koya-san
Koya-san or Mount Koya is the most important site in Shingon Buddhism, a sect that has been practiced in Japan since 805 when it was introduced by Kobo Daishi. It remains the headquarters for the sect and the small town that grew up around the temple. The site of Kobo Daishi’s mausoleum, this wooded Mount Koya is also the starting and ending place of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage.
9. Ishigaki
Located west of Okinawa, Ishigaki is Japan’s premier beach destination and makes a good base to explore the other islands in the Yaeyama archipelago. Blessed with Japan’s best beaches, it is particularly popular with families since the beaches at Fusaki and Maezato are net-protected. Located 1,250 miles (2,000 kilometers) south of Tokyo, Ishigaki may not have the shrines and temples that other Japanese cities have.
8. Kanazawa
In the mid-nineteenth century Kanazawa was Japan’s 4th largest city, built around a grand castle and the beautiful garden. Today, the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture continues to cultivate the arts and contains an attractive old town. Having escaped bombing during World War II, traditional inner-city areas, such as Nagamachi with its samurai houses and the charming geisha teahouse district of Higashi Chaya, remain intact and are a joy to wander around.
7. Hiroshima
Hiroshima, located on Honshu Island, is younger than many Japanese cities, less than 500 years old, but its fate was forever sealed in history on August 6, 1945, when it became the first city in the world to have an atomic bomb dropped on it. Thus, the city’s attractions center around peace: Peace Park, Peace Memorial and Peace Memorial Museum. The city also has attractions that invoke more pleasant thoughts, such as Hiroshima Castle and the sunken garden of Shukkein-en.
6. Kamakura
Located on the coast less than an hour from Tokyo, Kamakura was once an important town, the seat of a military government that ruled Japan for a hundred years. Today, it’s a relaxed seaside resort sometimes called the Kyoto of eastern Japan because of its many temples and shrines. Its most famous sight is the Daibutsu, a huge bronze Buddha statue surrounded by trees, but the town’s ancient Zen temples are equally compelling.
5. Nikko
Nikko is a small town at the entrance to Nikko National Park, most famous for Toshogu, Japan’s most lavishly decorated shrine and the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Another popular attraction is the red-lacquered Shin-kyō bridge. One of the popular places to visit in Japan, the national park offers scenic mountainous landscapes, lakes, waterfalls, wild monkeys and many hiking trails.
4. Takayama
Visitors who long for peace and quiet after the hustling pace of Japan’s big cities may want to head to the tourist town of Hida-Takayama where they can experience life in a rural setting. Located near the northern Japan Alps, Takayama is well known for having one of the best-preserved old towns in Japan. The prettiest section of the old city is called Sanmachi.
3. Nara
Nara, once known as Heijo, was the first permanent capital of Japan, established in 710. The capital was moved to Nagaoka in 784 when the government was threatened by powerful Buddhist monasteries. Located less than an hour from Kyoto, seeing Japan’s oldest and largest temples is a popular tourist activity.

Kyoto today is the capital only of Kyoto prefecture, but it once served as the imperial capital of Japan for more than 1,000 years. Located on central Honshu Island, this city of 1.5 million people is known as the City of 10,000 Shrines because it has thousands of Shinto shrines, including the top rated Fushimi Inari Shrine, and Buddhist temples.

Travelers who like to mingle with people will love Tokyo. The Japanese capital’s metropolitan area is the most populous in the world. From viewing spring cherry blossoms in traditional gardens to the fish market at Tuskiji. Tokyo blends the ancient with the new, from shrines to karaoke bars. Just walking the streets of this hyperactive city can be an energizing experience.

There are three Peace Bells in the Peace Park. The smaller one is used only for the Peace Memorial Ceremony. Except that day, it is displayed in the east building of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. The more well-known Peace Bell stands near the Children's Peace Monument and consists of a large Japanese bell hanging inside a small open-sided structure. Visitors are encouraged to ring the bell for world peace and the loud and melodious tolling of this bell rings out regularly throughout the Peace Park.[20] The Peace Bell was built out in the open on September 20, 1964. The surface of the bell is a map of the world, and the sweet spot is an atomic symbol, designed by Masahiko Katori [1899-1988], cast by Oigo Bell Works, in Takaoka, Toyama. The inscriptions on the bell are in Greek (γνῶθι σεαυτόν), Japanese, and Sanskrit. It is translated as Know yourself. The Greek embassy donated the bell to the Peace Park and picked out the most appropriate ancient Greek philosophical quote of Socrates. The Sanskrit was translated by the Indian ambassador, and the Japanese by a university lecturer.

Honno-ji: Oda Nobunaga's Sepuku!
This temple is the head temple of the Hokke-shu Hommon sect, and was established in the year 1415 by the monk Nichiryu.
In 1582 Oda Nobunaga was attacked at this temple by Akechi Mitsuhide (the Honno-ji incident). Although this temple is famous world wide where Nobunaga committed suicide with his own sword, at the time it was a grand temple with over 30 residences, which was burnt to the ground.
In 1589 the temple was rebuilt in its current location through the town planning efforts of Toyotomi Hideyoshi only to be later destroyed in great fires at the end of the Edo period. The main temple was completely destroyed. The current temple is a reconstruction completed in 1928.
To commemorate the appointment of Tokugawa Yoshimune as shogun, the visits of a tongsinsa diplomatic mission was requested from Korea. In response, a delegation consisting of 346 members was sent to Japan and stayed at this temple in 1719. The members of the mission said that the temple was incomparable more magnificent than any other (Sin Yu Han). At night, a great banquet was held here at the Shogun's command. This event was symbolic of friendly relations between Japan and Korea.
In the back of the temple are the grave yards of some famous Japanese people, such as Oda Nobunaga and Gyokudo Urakami.

History of Nikko
Beginning of Mountain Worship in Nikko
In 766 when the capital of Japan was Nara, a Buddhist priest named Shodo Shonin (Saint Shodo), stepped into the mountains in Nikko and founded the Shihonryuji Temple (the origin of the Nikkosan Rinnoji Temple),: this was the beginning of the history of Nikko. Then, Shodo Shonin tried to climb the 2,486-high Mt. Nantaisan and reached to the top at the third attempt. Having founded okumiya (the rear shrine), and hongu (main shrine), there, he opened the Jinguji Temple (current Chuzenji Temple), by the Chuzenji Lake. From this time, Nikko’s prosperity began, as a sacred place of faith where Shintoism to worship the mountain god coexists with Buddhism to consider the mountains as the pure land of the Goddess of Mercy.

Tokuga Ieyasu is the Shogun who established the Edo bakufu that was to be maintained for more than 250 years. Wishing to watch his country to be in peace, Ieyasu left a will to construct a small shrine in the mountain of Nikko and enshrine his bones. After Ieyasu had died in 1616, the shrine was constructed in Nikko next year to follow his will. Then, the shrine renovated into the current splendorous and flamboyant style of the Nikko Toshogu Shrine by Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third Shogun and Ieyasu’s grandson. Iemitsu wished to serve Ieyasu even after his death and ordered to construct the Taiyuin, the mausoleum of himself, in the mountain of Nikko. After that, Nikko was prospered as a town built around the Nikko Toshogu Shrine, and more than 200,000 cedar trees were planted on the approach to the shrine by his subjects.
Secluded Area Where Fleeing Heike Warriors Inhabited Secretly
The battle between the Minamotos and the Tairas started in 1185 and divided Japan into two. It is said that some warriors of the Taira clan who defeated at the battle fled to this place, which was more than 1,000km away from the battle area, and inhabited secretly. They made their own communities by dangerous ravines near Yunishigawa and Kawamata to hide and escape from their enemy, and their ancestors have lived there for several hundred years quietly and secretly. Even now, they have maintained their own unique custom: for example, they do not emit smoke from their houses and do not keep dogs and hens, because of the big noise they make.

Thanks to Typhoon Lan, we were delayed by nearly 24 hours and stuck overnight on our express train. But at least we were able to continue the following day!
First stop, and an essential visit when in Hiroshima is the Memorial Peace Park and museum. It's a sobering experience and upsetting when you view some of the artifacts in the museum. The horrors of war! However, hopefully it goes someway to promote World peace.
Later, we visit the beautiful Shukukei-en gardens and Hiroshima's magnificent castle, a bit of a whistle stop tour due to our unavoidable delays.
Then, it's off by rail to the ferry terminal for the short trip to Miyajima Island. We arrive early evening and this place, as we discover the following day, is paradise!

History of Nikko
Beginning of Mountain Worship in Nikko
In 766 when the capital of Japan was Nara, a Buddhist priest named Shodo Shonin (Saint Shodo), stepped into the mountains in Nikko and founded the Shihonryuji Temple (the origin of the Nikkosan Rinnoji Temple),: this was the beginning of the history of Nikko. Then, Shodo Shonin tried to climb the 2,486-high Mt. Nantaisan and reached to the top at the third attempt. Having founded okumiya (the rear shrine), and hongu (main shrine), there, he opened the Jinguji Temple (current Chuzenji Temple), by the Chuzenji Lake. From this time, Nikko’s prosperity began, as a sacred place of faith where Shintoism to worship the mountain god coexists with Buddhism to consider the mountains as the pure land of the Goddess of Mercy.

Tokuga Ieyasu is the Shogun who established the Edo bakufu that was to be maintained for more than 250 years. Wishing to watch his country to be in peace, Ieyasu left a will to construct a small shrine in the mountain of Nikko and enshrine his bones. After Ieyasu had died in 1616, the shrine was constructed in Nikko next year to follow his will. Then, the shrine renovated into the current splendorous and flamboyant style of the Nikko Toshogu Shrine by Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third Shogun and Ieyasu’s grandson. Iemitsu wished to serve Ieyasu even after his death and ordered to construct the Taiyuin, the mausoleum of himself, in the mountain of Nikko. After that, Nikko was prospered as a town built around the Nikko Toshogu Shrine, and more than 200,000 cedar trees were planted on the approach to the shrine by his subjects.
Secluded Area Where Fleeing Heike Warriors Inhabited Secretly
The battle between the Minamotos and the Tairas started in 1185 and divided Japan into two. It is said that some warriors of the Taira clan who defeated at the battle fled to this place, which was more than 1,000km away from the battle area, and inhabited secretly. They made their own communities by dangerous ravines near Yunishigawa and Kawamata to hide and escape from their enemy, and their ancestors have lived there for several hundred years quietly and secretly. Even now, they have maintained their own unique custom: for example, they do not emit smoke from their houses and do not keep dogs and hens, because of the big noise they make.
