Gion, Kyoto - Letters from Japan
Gion is Kyoto's Geisha District. The traditional wooden teahouses and merchant shops lend an old Japan feeling as you walk around Gion's streets and narrow alley-ways.
If you’re coming from Kyoto station, you could take the 206 bus and get off in front of the Yasaka Shrine. You could also take the subway to Sanjo, but you'll need to walk a further 10 or 15 minutes.
Gion-Shijo is the closest train station. This is on the Keihan line, so you might have to transfer from the subway.

Kyoto Restaurant Tour Experience | Gion at Night ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Kyoto, Japan. Think food. Lots of food! That's dining out in the city and Gion is the place to be at night. Tempura, Tofu, Ramen, Wagyu Steaks, Sushi, Sashimi, Sukiyaki, Grilled Fish ... it's endless! All with some of the best Japanese sake in the land! I haven't even gotten to the desserts!
Now close your eyes ー imagine beautiful Japanese streets lined with hundreds of wooden tea houses, red paper lanterns, bamboo -- and Geisha floating by. That's where we are going!
For first time visitors to Japan, knowing Japanese is often important to get the full dining experience. Although I can speak Japanese, I was alone so I decided to book a tour with a local guide.
What is this Magical Tour you ask?

Gion District, Kyoto City
Gion District is a historic area in Kyoto city, close to the sizzle of the downtown Kyoto and located between the downtown and the Yasaka Shrine. In olden times this place was used as a place to relax by the travelers to Kyoto city and Yasaka Shrine. The old charms still remain but now it has become more commercial with many drinking/eating establishments, Geisha houses and even Pachinko Parlors. But it is one of the most visited places in Kyoto city and reminds the visitors of the by gone charm of the ancient Kyoto city.

Gion & downtown Kyoto, Japan travel video
Most visitors to Kyoto, Japan are here to enjoy the temples, gardens and the historic sites but you'll also find that downtown Kyoto is very appealing. It's a busy modern shopping area that features a couple of major boulevards, several large department stores and smaller pedestrian-only streets, and there’s many blocks of boutiques and restaurants, cafés and thousands of local residents filling the sidewalks.
Near the Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto you'll find the most famous downtown historic neighborhood, Gion, the neighborhood of the geisha or as they say in Kyoto, the geiko. And the little side streets are where you want to venture to see the really charming part of old Kyoto.
Hanamikoji is the main side street in Gion where you're most likely to run into some geisha. Keep in mind you want to be polite and considerate when you see a geisha, or geiko as they are called in Kyoto.
The primary commercial street here is Shijo dori and it's always very busy, full of shops and pedestrians and there's a lot of cars, a lot of traffic going by. We’ll show you more of this in a few minutes, including a covered shopping mall, but it’s kind of nice to get away from the busy streets and into the side lanes.
Be sure to also walk a few blocks north along Kiyamachi to reach the charming little canal that winds its way above and below Shijo-dori.

My Favourite Part of Kyoto | Photography in Japan
Photography in Japan has just been a treat. And on today's vlog we went to my favourite part of Kyoto: Hokanji.
Check out my Japan Photography on IG at @brendanvanson.
Hokanji, in the old town of Kyoto, is one of the best photography locations in all of Japan. There are people wandering around dressed in kimonos which make for great street photos. There is even the occasional Geisha wandering about as well. But, from a travel perspective, there is a great line of Hokanji temple which makes for a beautiful composition.
Photography in Japan is a treat, but in the busy season it's also really, well, busy. During the cherry blossoms there seem to be double the usual crowds, and that does make it a little bit of a challenge. But, it's worth it. The photos of Japan that I've take so far have been among my favourites. It's just been such an amazing country to get the camera out. And, this Hokanji area of Kyoto is one of my favourite spots.
Tomorrow, there's another Japan vlog as we still have a couple days left in Kyoto.
【4K】Evening Kyoto - walking around Gion

Kyoto, Japan - Gion Rare Geisha Viewing #3 - 18 May 2016
Gion Walking Tour - Kyoto Japan I 4K
Gion is Kyoto's famous geisha district. This area is very popular with tourists because you will find a concentration of wooden Machiya Houses or townhouses and Ochaya or teahouses. It is at these teahouses where the Geiko (Geisha) and Maiko (Geisha apprentice) entertain. Even today, you can see Geiko and Maiko in their colorful kimonos walking through the streets. Gion also has many bars, restaurants and food shops selling traditional treats.
