Gion Matsuri in HD - Yasaka Shrine Events
Throughout the popular Gion Festival period in July there are various rituals and forms of entertainment put on all over Kyoto for those who came to see the festival to enjoy and participate in. Folk dances performed by local children, action-packed kagura plays, dynamic drum concerts, and graceful dances by apprentice geisha are only a few of the many performances on stage and in the streets throughout the month. For those who want to watch or participate there are colorful parades and a summer purification ritual as well. Our team stopped by the Omukae Chōchin ritual, the Hanagasa Junkō parade, the Kankōsai portable shrine journey, and the Eki Jinja purification ritual in order to capture the sights and sounds of this famous festival month. Kyoto Gion Matsuri Festival Yoiyama Walking - a representative festival of Japan [4K] POV
The Gion Matsuri is one of Japan’s biggest annual events and the most famous festival.
Festival lasts through July and long festival. The main events are traditional parade, the Yamaboko Junkō on 17 July and 24 July.
Yamaboko is historical floats. In parade, floats are pulled by people.
3 days before parade are held evening event, yoiyama, yoiyoiyama, yoiyoiyoiyama. Yamaboko floats are built in many place of Kyoto’s downtown. People see Yamaboko floats close and ride it in this period.

Gion Matsuri - Kyoto Japan July 2019
My family went to explore the Gion Matsuri (festival) in Kyoto Japan (July 2019). It was lots of fun to dress in the traditional summertime yukatas and walk around the festival. My brother was more interested in the snacks. He had the shave ice, bubble tea and the candy apple. We were able to walk up inside the tuski hobo . These are a couple stories tall and they are on wheels. Musicians are on the second floor of these and play traditional music. They are on wheels as they will be pulled down the street on the last day of the festival . We were also happy to meet our family friend Kei-san. She was volunteering at one of the Hoko sites. We were able to go in to see the artifacts of the HOKO including the ornamental praying mantis and the large hand woven fabrics that are used to adorn the outside of the hook to give it color. It was a great day in Kyoto as always.

Gion Matsuri: Yoiyama Nights in Kyoto, Japan 【HD】
The Yoiyama Nights are celebrated in downtown Kyoto, as part of the Gion Festival, from July 14 to July 16, before the Yamaboko Junko parade takes place on the 17th.
Starting at 6 p.m., the streets are closed to the traffic and thousands of people fill them with all the energy and joy of summer. During these 3 nights, the Yamaboko floats to be pulled on the parade are decorated with beautiful lanterns, and visitors are allowed to ride on them. Also, you can enjoy lots of street stands offering different types of food and drinks, special displays and exhibitions at local stores and many traditional houses opened to the public and showing their family treasures.
This festival is a great opportunity to wear a Yukata or a Jinbei, and a pair of Geta or Zori flip-flops. If you plan to come to Kyoto during summer, this is an experience you don't want to miss!

Gion Matsuri -Kyoto-
The Gion Festival (Gion Matsuri) takes place annually in Kyoto and is one of the most famous festivals in Japan. It spans the entire month of July and is crowned by a parade, the Yamaboko Junkō on July 17. It takes its name from Kyoto's Gion district.

Ayagasaboko float marchers.Kyoto's downtown area is reserved for pedestrian traffic on the three nights leading up to the massive parade. These nights are known as yoiyama on July 16, yoiyoiyama on July 15, and yoiyoiyoiyama on July 14. The streets are lined with night stalls selling food such as yakitori (barbecued chicken skewers), taiyaki, takoyaki, okonomiyaki, traditional Japanese sweets, and many other culinary delights. Many girls dressed in yukata (summer kimono) walk around the area, carrying with them traditional purses and paper fans.
During the yoiyama evenings leading up to the parade, some private houses in the old kimono merchant district open their entryways to the public, exhibiting valuable family heirlooms, in a custom known as the Byōbu Matsuri, or Folding Screen Festival. This is a precious opportunity to visit and observe traditional Japanese residences of Kyoto.
Gion Matsuri: The Hokaboko Float’s Journey
July in Kyoto is completely dominated by the Gion Festival, one of the most famous festivals in all Japan. Occurring first in 869 and an annual event since 970, the Gion Matsuri has a lot of history to draw from and includes a variety of rituals and entertainment. The popular stars of the festival though, are the 33 floats built and maintained by local neighborhoods in central Kyoto that appear in the grand Yamaboko Junkō parades. Each float has distinct décor, history, and traditions woven in to the larger Gion Festival framework. One float neighborhood was kind enough to let us inside their headquarters to observe some of their activities and track the float through its time in the parade. Just to give an idea of how the Gion festival in Kyoto city looks like.
This is an older video, taken back in July, when my husband and I went to the famous Gion Festival. I'm in the moment mostly trying to edit a lot of videos I took during my exchange in Japan, but time is not my friend. I'm off to Japan next week so new videos are bound to come soon.

“Gion Matsuri”is one of the three biggest festivals in Japan.
During 1st July to 31st July for over a month, there are several different events.
The highlight is the Yamahoko Junko parade that is held on 17th July.

Gion Matsuri Floats Parade: Yamaboko Junko. Kyoto, Japan 【HD】
The Yamaboko Junko, the floats parade of the Gion Matsuri takes place on July 17, after the three Yoiyama nights in which the floats are opened to the public. This procession departs from Shijo Karasuma and goes all around the center of Kyoto for about 4 hours.
The biggest float on the parade is 26 meters tall, weights about 12 tons, have wheels of 1.9 meters of diameter and needs from 40 to 50 persons to be pulled.
In the video we first see how the people pulling the floats make them turn by putting wet bamboo pieces under the wheels and then pulling them to the side.
In the last part we see how the procession passes through a narrow street called Shinmachi, one of the places where you can take a really close look to the floats and see how they are pulled and guided.

This is Gion Matsuri, one of the top festivals in Japan, and most famous event in Kyoto. The celebration lasts the entire month of July, but I wanted to show the highlight days (15th/16th) of the festival.

The Gion Festival (祇園祭 Gion Matsuri) takes place annually in Kyoto and is one of the most famous festivals in all of Japan. It goes for the entire month of July and is crowned by a parade, the Yamaboko Junkō (山鉾巡行) on July 17 and July 24. The event takes Its name from Kyoto's Gion district.
Kyoto's downtown area is reserved for pedestrian traffic on the three nights leading up to the massive parade. These nights are known as yoiyama (宵山) on July 16 and July 23, yoiyoiyama (宵々山) on July 15 and July 22, and yoiyoiyoiyama (宵々々山) on July 14 and July 21. The streets are lined with night stalls selling food such as yakitori (barbecued chicken skewers), taiyaki, takoyaki, okonomiyaki, traditional Japanese sweets, and many other culinary delights. Many girls dressed in yukata (summer kimono) walk around the area, carrying with them traditional purses and paper fans.
This festival originated as part of a purification ritual (goryo-e) to appease the gods thought to cause fire, floods and earthquakes. In 869, the people were suffering from plague and pestilence which was attributed to the rampaging deity Gozu Tennō (牛頭天王). Emperor Seiwa ordered that the people pray to the god of the Yasaka Shrine, Susanoo-no-Mikoto. Sixty-six stylized and decorated halberds, one for each province in old Japan, were prepared and erected at Shinsen-en, a garden, along with the portable shrines (mikoshi) from Yasaka Shrine.

7月10日に開催されました祇園祭のお迎え提灯を撮影いたしました。他のお祭りでは見られないルートでの巡行はとても新鮮に感じました。夕暮れ時の四条大橋を背景に練り歩く行列はとても美しかったです。

Gion Matsuri 2015 - Omukae Chochin - Kyoto, Japan (Gion Matsuri Series Part 1)
This is the first part of a video I recorded at this year's (2015) Gion Matsuri. It was recorded on July 10th, and it is my first time experiencing the festival.
Please, if you get the chance, come and see the festival in person. A video or photos don't do the event justice, it was an amazing experience I will never forget. I now (hope) to attend the festival every year, it is one of the reasons I wanted to come to Japan, and it more than surpassed any expectations I had.
