Westland National Park ... Stretching the top of the Southern Alps in the east, where it shares a common boundary with Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, to the Tasman Sea in the west, this 1,175-sq-km (450-sq-mile) national park is renowned for its mountain peaks (which reach a height of 3,500 m or 11,500 ft), dramatic glaciers, dense rainforest, coastal lagoons and beautiful lakes. Although the park contains about 60 glaciers, the most famous are the Franz Josef and the Fox. Despite the intrusions of the West Coast gold rush of the 1860s and pastoral farming on the river flats, the area has remained largely unspoiled.

We took a helicopter ride over Fox Glacier and Josef Glacier. The helicopter stopped on top of Josef Glacier. Mount Cook was viewable from the top (slightly behind the clouds). I captured the flight from the top of Josef Glacier going down into it (starts 1.07minutes into it). It is about 7.5 miles long. Fox Glacier is about 12 miles long.

We continue exploring the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island by embarking on a Franz Josef Glacier helicopter tour. Our amazing helicopter ride flies between Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier, making a snow landing on top of the glacier. We also wandered around Hokitika Gorge, viewing its brilliant turquoise waters, navigating rope bridges, and hiking through the forest.

This was my first time to New Zealand and the helicopter flight around the glaciers was easily the highlight of my trip.
What is a glacier?
Glaciers are made up of fallen snow that, over many years, compresses into large, thickened ice masses. Glaciers form when snow remains in one location long enough to transform into ice. What makes glaciers unique is their ability to move. Due to sheer mass, glaciers flow like very slow rivers. Some glaciers are as small as football fields, while others grow to be over a hundred kilometers long.
About these glaciers:
The Franz Josef glacier is 12 kms long and is located in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. Together with the Fox Glacier 20 km to the south, it is unique in descending from the Southern Alps to less than 300 metres (980 ft) above sea level, amidst the greenery and lushness of a temperate rainforest.
The glacier area is one of the main tourist attractions of the West Coast, with around a massive 250,000 visitors a year, and up to 2,700 per day.

Fly over Franz Josef Glacier with a Helicopter flight and then hike on its icy surface.
On your journey through the South Island of New Zealand, fly above and walk on the icy surface of Franz Josef Glacier. During this 3-hour heli-hike, you will see the glacier from the sky in a helicopter before landing on top and setting off to explore its dramatic landscape. Your guide will teach you about the glacier's origin and point out water so fresh you can drink it. With the hike complete, the helicopter will take you back down where you can warm up in the Glacier Hot Pools.
