-- About this video --
Today we are hitting Lake Mapourika to do some kayaking at Franz Josef Glacier! We meet up with the team at Glacier Country Kayaks in Franz Josef who then transport us and all the kayaking gear to Lake Mapourika.
After gearing up and getting a paddling lesson, we hit the waters of the super reflective Lake Mapourika. Along the way, our guide, Dale, is telling us about the fascinating geological history of Lake Mapourika which was formed by Franz Josef Glacier. We are also heading to the side of the lake with the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary. Here we learn about the rare kiwi bird species that live in the area.
We also explore narrow creeks, kayak under ancient towering New Zealand forest, and watch eels swimming in the clear water. Kayaking on Lake Mapourika is just one of the great things to do in Franz Josef. What’s more, the reflection is so vivid it makes Lake Mapourika one of the New Zealand mirror lakes.
After kayaking around Lake Mapourika, we return to our start point and head back to Franz Josef for our final night here.
So what do you think of Kayaking at Franz Josef Glacier? Is it a kayaking tour in New Zealand you would take?

Frans Josef and Fox Glaciers and Lake Matheson New Zealand
The Franz Josef (Ka Roimata o Hinehukatere in Māori) is a 12 km long glacier located in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. Together with the Fox Glacier 20 km to the south, it is unique in descending from the Southern Alps to less than 300 metres above sea level, amidst the greenery and lushness of a temperate rainforest.
The area surrounding the two glaciers is part of Te Wahipounamu, a World Heritage Site park. The river emerging from the glacier terminal of Franz Josef is known as the Waiho River.
Fed by four alpine glaciers, Fox Glacier falls 2,600m on its 13km journey from the Southern Alps down to the coast, with it having the distinction of being one of the few glaciers to end among lush rainforest only 300 metres above sea level. Although retreating throughout most of the last 100 years, it has been advancing since 1985.
First a view on the Frans Josef Glacier then a walk to and on the Fox Glacier. Others took a heli and landed on the glacier more up.
Lake Matheson, near the Fox Glacier in South Westland, New Zealand, is famous for its reflected views of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman and its nature, but at our visit ther were som clouds.

New Zealand - Franz Jozef Glacier Walk and View
Westland National Park ... Stretching the top of the Southern Alps in the east, where it shares a common boundary with Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, to the Tasman Sea in the west, this 1,175-sq-km (450-sq-mile) national park is renowned for its mountain peaks (which reach a height of 3,500 m or 11,500 ft), dramatic glaciers, dense rainforest, coastal lagoons and beautiful lakes. Although the park contains about 60 glaciers, the most famous are the Franz Josef and the Fox.
We walk through the moraine (debris) field at the head of the glacier for a close-up look.
Glacier Helicopters - Fox Glacier & Franz Josef Glacier - New Zealand.
Experience spectacular scenic helicopter flights and incredible glacier landings. The opportunity to view up close and touch the glacier formations, ice caves and pinnacles - makes for a truly memorable experience. Glacier Helicopter flights range from 20 - 40 minutes and can include Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glaciers, Aoraki/Mt Cook and the Southern Alps.

Fox Glacier:
The Fox Glacier (Te Moeka o Tuawe in Māori) is a 13 km (8.1 mi) long glacier located in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. It was named in 1872 after a visit by the then Prime Minister of New Zealand, Sir William Fox. Fed by four alpine glaciers, Fox Glacier falls 2,600 m (8,500 ft) on its 13 km journey from the Southern Alps down to the coast, with it having the distinction of being one of the few glaciers to end among lush rainforest only 300 metres (980 ft) above sea level. Although retreating throughout most of the last 100 years, it has been advancing since 1985. In 2006 the average rate of advance was about a metre a week. In January 2009, the terminal face of the glacier was still advancing and had vertical or overhanging faces which were continually collapsing.
Like the nearby Franz Josef Glacier, it is one of the most accessible glaciers in the world, with its terminal face an easy walk from Fox Glacier village/Weheka. It is a major tourist attraction and about 1000 people daily visit it during high tourist season.Though people are told not to, some go beyond the barriers and climb without guides onto the glacier, whose rapid advance creates dangers of sudden ice and rockfalls.Fox Glacier township/Weheka, 6 km away from the glacier, functions mainly as a service centre for tourists, though it also services the local farming community, which had been its main focus until the 1990s (though tourism started as early as the late 1920s). The approximate township site had been gazetted as early as 1866. Bruce Bay is 46 km to the south-west of the township, and Franz Josef is 23 km north-east. State Highway 6 runs through the town. The outflow of the glacier forms the Fox River. During the last ice age, its ice reached beyond the present coastline, and the glacier left behind many moraines during its retreat. Lake Matheson formed as a kettle lake within one of these.Wikipedia
