Buttes Resort Sierra City CA Hiking and Gold panning trip
Welcome to Sierra City!
The elevation of Sierra City is 5,407 feet (1,648 m) and the town is situated in the canyon of the North Yuba River on California State Route 49, twelve miles northeast of the county seat of Sierra County, Downieville. The population was 221.
High in the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains, nature used the wild waters of the North Yuba river to carve our little townsite, a natural observation deck for the mighty Sierra Buttes, gateway to the magnificent lakes basin and a refreshing portal on the famous Pacific Crest Trail. Here, hikers, cyclists, hunters, anglers and boaters have a world of choices for adventure and challenge. Lodging and dining are sumptuous in the pine air, which makes food taste better and sound sleep natural. Your soul is restored.
Sierra City - Part 3 The Magic Of Downtown
Sierra City came to be in 1850 as the town at one time was built higher up on a ledge within the Sierra Buttes which overshadow the town. An avalanche destroyed the town in 1853 and in 1858 it was rebuilt. This region contained some of the richest gold mines in California during the gold rush and largest nuggets including one that weighed in at 106lbs. Today the mining has ceased but many of the historical remnants of the past and structures from the 1800's still stand including the Masonic Hall which served also as a school built in 1864. You get a sense of magic in the air as I take you on this historic tour through downtown and down various streets which contain cozy rustic homes. This area is pure, untouched as beauty and history lurks around every turn. Over 30 million in gold was retrieved from its mines and river in this canyon.

Sierra Buttes Fire Lookout Via PCT 7/7/2017 - Pacific Crest Trail, Sierra City, CA
Hiking up Sierra Buttes Fire Lookout is an epic journey with amazing views from the top as you climb the steep stairs to reach the lookout. The Fire Lookout stands on top of one of the craggy buttes at 8,587 feet. Sweeping vistas in all directions are no doubt WOW! Sardine Lakes, peaks of Tahoe/Desolation Wilderness and as far as Mt. Lassen (100 miles away!) are seen along with nearby mountains like Haskell Peak.
The hike is 2.5 miles/1,800' gain one way via PCT while there are other longer routes to the lookout via Tamarack Lakes and Sierra City. As of July 7, 2017, there are some snow fields on trail, but they are short, not difficult to cross and probably will melt away in a week or two. Stay on track as the trail disappears here and there under the snow. Wildflowers are blooming and beautiful, but may not last that long as the summer's heat continues.
The lookout was built in 1915, one of many in the greater Tahoe region. The stairs to the lookout was constructed by five Tahoe National Forest employees in the summer of 1964 to make it possible for visitors to climb to the lookout with ease and safety.
For a side trip, you can drive to Sardine Lake Resort at Lower Sardine Lake for a breathtaking view of Sierra Buttes rising above the lake. Also, another option would be to drive a short distance to Frazier Falls near Gold Lake. A paved trail (1/2 mile one way) takes you to the beautiful waterfalls.

Sierra City - Part 5 Loves Falls
Loves Falls resides just outside of Sierra City within the Tahoe National Forest on the Pacific Crest Trail. Back in the day this was a lovers hotspot today its a hiking mecca for those who wish to seek out its beauty. Despite drought as you can see its very lush and water is very abundant as rapids flow over its rocks forming pools of crystal clear water. Along the way you will see remnants of a placer mining operation which at one time many mines operated along the Yuba River today leaving such remnants behind. It is called Loves Falls because supposedly there is a heart-shaped rock found here near the wooden foot bridge. I took my family back here so my son could try a hand at gold panning although most of the gold is long gone it was fun trying! The Pacific Crest Trail is full of rewards such as this these falls are only one of many!
