George Wallace's Life in 16 Minutes
Wow, over 20,000 views! Thanks so much to everyone for the kind words, and thanks to Mr. Beat for the shout-out. He was the original inspiration for this video, by the way.

In this video, I sum up the life and political career of George Wallace, 4-term Alabama Governor and 4-time presidential candidate, in 16 minutes. Many only know Wallace for his pro-segregation viewpoints, and if you're one of these people, then this is the video for you. My goal is not to sway opinion, but to provide more context and info to a man often painted with a very broad brush. Hopefully you enjoy it.

Aaron Foley: How To Live In Detroit Without Being A Jacka** | Talks at Google
Author & Detroit resident Aaron Foley discusses his book How To Live In Detroit Without Being A Jackass. Foley, a journalist and essayist whose work has appeared in the likes of CNN, The Atlantic, Forbes, Ebony, and BuzzFeed uses the base of his hometown of Detroit to dive into issues of race, class, urbanism, gentrification and pop culture in a unique, and often humorous, way.
Aaron's social guidebook, as well as this Talk, provides comical perspective for coastal transplants, wary suburbanites, unwitting gentrifiers, curious onlookers, die-hard natives and everyone in between. Aaron provides advice to help avoid falling into the “jackass” trap and become the productive, healthy city-dweller that we’ve always wanted to be.

Big Muskie - The Largest Walking Dragline Ever Built
Standing 22 stories tall and weighing 13,500 metric tons, Big Muskie was the world's largest dragline and the biggest machine that has ever walked on the face of the earth. With the boom down, it was almost 500 ft in length. Big Muskie was a coal mining Bucyrus-Erie dragline owned by the Central Ohio Coal Company. It removed more than twice the amount of earth moved during the construction of the Panama Canal. Its bucket could hold two Greyhound buses side by side.
I was talking to a guy in a bar in Fort Stockton,Texas in 2001. When I told him I was from Ohio he said he just came back from Ohio. He was on a crew that was cutting up Big Muskie. He said he was there a year outside of Zanesville. He was surprised that I never heard of Big Muskie. I was surprised when he said it took a year to cut up. Here's why.....

SUMMARY
=======
Lynching is the practice of murder by a group by extrajudicial action. Lynchings in the United States rose in number after the American Civil War in the late 1800s, following the emancipation of slaves; they declined in the 1920s but have continued to take place into the 21st century. Most lynchings were of African-American men in the South, but women were also lynched, and white lynchings of blacks occurred in Midwestern and border states, especially during the 20th-century Great Migration of blacks out of the South. The purpose was to enforce white supremacy and intimidate blacks by racial terrorism. On a per capita basis lynchings were also common in California and the Old West, especially of Latinos, although they represented less than 10% of the national total. Native Americans and Asian Americans were also lynched. Other ethnicities (white, Finnish-American, Jewish, Irish, Italian-American) were occasionally lynched.
The stereotype of a lynching is a hanging, because hangings are what crowds of people saw, and are also easy to photograph. Some hangings were professionally photographed and sold as postcards, which were popular souvenirs in some parts of the U.S. Victims were also killed by mobs in a variety of other ways: shot repeatedly, burned alive, forced to jump off a bridge, dragged behind cars, and the like. Sometimes they were tortured as well, with body parts sometimes removed and sold as souvenirs. Occasionally lynchings were not fatal (see Lynching survivors in the United States). A mock lynching, putting the rope around the neck of someone suspected of concealing information, might be used to compel confessions.According to the Tuskegee Institute, 4,743 people were lynched between 1882 and 1968 in the United States, including 3,446 African Americans and 1,297 whites. More than 73 percent of lynchings in the post-Civil War period occurred in the Southern states. According to the Equal Justice Initiative, 4,084 African-Americans were lynched between 1877 and 1950 in the South.Lynchings were most frequent from 1890 to the 1920s, with a peak in 1892. Lynchings were often large mob actions, attended by hundreds or thousands of watchers, sometimes announced in advance in newspapers and in one instance with a special train. However, in the later 20th century lynchings became more secretive, and were conducted by smaller groups of people.
According to Michael Pfeifer, the prevalence of lynching in postbellum America reflects lack of confidence in the due process judicial system. He links the decline in lynching in the early twentieth century with the advent of the modern death penalty: legislators renovated the death penalty...out of direct concern for the alternative of mob violence. He also cites the modern, racialized excesses of u ...
I'm A Brown Woman Who's Breaking Up With The Democratic Party
The first vote I ever cast, at 18, was for Bill Clinton. The last vote I cast was for his wife, Hillary. My adoration for Hillary bordered on mania. In college, I named my ficus plant after her. Twenty years later, I canvassed, held fundraisers, dragged my 8-year-old daughter door to door, proudly wore HRC’s face on T-shirts and housed campaign volunteers in my home.
I loved you so much that I cried each time I voted. Thinking about the women who died fighting for my right to vote did it every time. I cried when I voted for Bill. For Barack Obama. I wept when I voted for Hillary. You’ve been that kind of mad love to me.
I realize now that the love has been one-sided, unrequited. You’ve never recognized me, as a brown woman. You’ve taken my love, my money, my tokenism, with nary anything in return. You married the white woman and hooked up with me on the side.
Black Lives Matter is a second ― or third ― thought. Where is your outrage over the national epidemic of police brutality against black people? You continue to call angry white men who commit mass murder “lone wolves.” But if someone who looks like me screams “Allah” and fires a gun, it’s “terrorism.” And you wonder why angry white men are gunning down innocent brown men at bars, in their yards, on the street.
For all your talk about Dreamers, there’s been little action. You don’t seem to give a crap about kids of color who will be kicked out of this country, the only country they know. What if all those Dreamers were white? I suspect there’d be a very different outcome.
To be fair, there’s no reason for you to assume otherwise. We always show up for you. Take, for example, the special election in Alabama on Tuesday. Had black people not shown up, an accused child molester would be our newest senator.
This past year, I held and attended numerous fundraisers for your candidates. I donated money every time I was asked. I marched: for women, for children, for reproductive rights, for science. I traveled across the country for the March for Women in Washington, D.C. It was there that I got the first hint that you weren’t that into me. The giveaway? The sea of white women in pink hats with brown and black women dotting the waves like debris. I let it slide but I kept my eyes and ears open.
My fellow brown and black sisters started to notice, too — and the chatter began, in whispered hushes at first, then loud and clear. You are a party of white feminists. Of white feminism, the kind of feminism that focuses on the struggles of white women. It was the first time I’d heard the term, most likely because self-awareness is hard and I was a brown woman trapped in a white feminist’s world.
Your advocacy for reproductive rights zeros in on wealthy white women. Women of color and other marginalized women get sidelined. The gender pay gap is worse for black and Latina women than it is for white women. Women of color make up 64 percent of women in U.S. jails. Why isn’t the Democratic Party talking about this and trying to fix it?
At the congresswoman’s town hall in February, Neeti Pawar, the brown female founder of the South Asian Bar Association of Colorado, was one of the only people of color in a room of nearly a thousand. She asked about immigration and DACA protections. The congresswoman scoffed. When Pawar pressed on, she was told to remain silent or she’d be asked to leave. During a follow-up, staffers told Pawar that civil rights weren’t the representative’s “issue.” Brown and black people don’t have the luxury of sidelining civil rights. It’s life and death for us.
I was organizing a fundraiser for a U.S. senator earlier this month, and had planned to use the opportunity to highlight women of color by having black women introduce him. The congresswoman’s staff caught wind of the event and asked if she could introduce the senator. I explained my position but invited her to come as a guest. No response. When pressed on her stance on racial inclusion, her staff didn’t respond to me directly but tattled on me to the white women co-hosting the event.
I know there are some good ones among you. But for every Kamala Harris, Maxine Waters and Pramila Jayapal sticking their brown and black necks out for me, there are dozens of white female Democrats who want me to shut my trap, and say please and thank you. I should be grateful for scraps while white women enjoy a proper marriage with you.

ch 11) Robber Barons And Rebels
chapter 11: A People's History (Of The United States) Howard Zinn.
~
Chapter 11, Robber Barons and Rebels covers the rise of industrial corporations such as the railroads and banks and their transformation into the nation's dominant institutions, with corruption resulting in both industry and government. Also covered are the popular movements and individuals that opposed corruption, such as the Knights of Labor, Edward Bellamy, the Socialist Labor Party, the Haymarket martyrs, the Homestead strikers, Alexander Berkman, Emma Goldman, Eugene V. Debs, the American Railway Union, the Farmers' Alliance, and the Populist Party.
Beer Politics in Iowa
The German immigrants who made Iowa their home in the 1800s found fertile fields perfectly suited for growing hops and barley, yet brewing was easier said than done. Out of all the Midwestern states where Germans settled, only Iowa was dominated by temperance advocates, who pursued prohibition measures with Republican support from 1856 onwards. Professor Ehrstine's lecture will explore the state's contested brewing culture and the corresponding political choices faced by German Iowans from the Civil War through World War I.
The German Iowa and the Global Midwest series is co-sponsored by the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies and International Programs.
This lecture is sponsored by the University of Iowa Provost's Office of Outreach & Engagement. To view upcoming lectures in the Hawkeye Lunch & Learn lecture series visit outreach.uiowa.edu/HawkeyeLL.
Repatriation & Restorative Justice: From Native American Remains & Sacred Objects to Nazi Art Theft
October 25, 2018
This panel addresses the process of repatriation at the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), repatriation from the tribal perspective and the repatriation of artwork, which was stolen from Jewish families during the Holocaust-era. Jennifer Kreder will discuss how museums have undermined the mission of the WWII Army Monuments Men (and Women), which entailed the recovery and return of art plundered during the Nazi era whenever and wherever it could be found. Jackie Swift will speak about the process of restoring Native American cultural items and human remains including funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony from museum collection to lineal descendants and culturally affiliated tribes, clans, villages, and/or organizations. David Martine will present on his work as the former Director/Curator of the Shinnecock Nation Cultural Center and Museum on Shinnecock Reservation in Southampton, NY. Conversation will follow regarding the concept of restorative justice within these two cultural contexts.
Speakers: Jennifer Kreder, Professor of Law at Solomon P. Chase College of Law, Northern Kentucky University
Jackie Swift (Comanche/Fort Sill Apache), Repatriation Manager, National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian Institution
David Martine (Shinnecock/Montauk, Chiricahua Apache), Chairperson, American Indian Artists Inc., (AMERINDA); Historic Preservation Officer, Shinnecock Nation
