Chá Gorreana tea plantation - São Miguel - Azores - 4K Ultra HD
In the Azores in São Miguel Island you will find the only tea plantations in Europe, which produce excellent teas, processing the leaves on vintage 19th century English machinery.
The only such plantation in Europe, courtesy of the island's balmy climate. (It rarely gets below 50°F or above 80°F in the Azores.)

AZORES: Gorreana tea plantation & factory - São Miguel Island
Since 1883 the company Gorreana produces black and green tea. It's a Portuguese company (in the family for five generations) headquartered on the Island of São Miguel in the Portuguese Azores. It is the oldest and currently only remaining tea factory in Europe. The tea is 100% biological: totally free from chemicals as herbicides, fungicides, pesticides and conservatives because natural tea plagues do not survive on the islands climate.
Green and black tea was introduced in the island in 1750, brought by ships returning from the Eastern world. The tea is made of dried leaves of the plant “camellia sinensis”, a small three of the Theaceae family. All tea comes from this plant and its hybrids. The difference in teas is based on the leaf selection and processing.

Gorreana Tea Factory, São Miguel, Azores, Portugal
The only tea plantation in Western Europe is found on the island of São Miguel in the Azores. No doubt the tea bushes feel at home at Gorreana on the humid north coast. The close-cropped tea bushes run in dense rows across the hills of the plantation. The old machines in the factory are mostly of English provenance. You can visit the factory and, before you leave, you can buy freshly fermented, green or black tea with its superb flowery flavour. You will only be able to watch all stages of tea processing from April through September, when the leaves are being picked.

Gorreana - Europes Oldest Tea Plantation on the Azores - How to make tea
Gorreana tea plantation on Sao Miguel in the Azores (portugal) is the oldest, and currently only, tea plantation in Europe. We visited the planatation and shop during our visit to Sao Miguel in 2017.
Suggest you visit them online or in person. For more details check
In this video you can see the plantation, how the cut the tea leaves and how the production process is.
Gorreana Tea recognized internationally as a world class tea is Europe's oldest ,and currently only, remaining Tea plantation. Family owned and operated since 1883, when Ermelinda Gago da Câmara and her son José Honorato opened the factory selling the first production of teas under the Gorreana name.
Grown hundreds of miles away from industrial pollution in the lush emerald green hills of the Gorreana estate in the Atlantic island of São Miguel (Azores) without the use of herbicides, pesticides, fungicides dyes or preservatives and harvested fresh every April to September with a large celebration at the peak of the annual harvest, Gorreana's single estate organic green & black teas have been in continued production since 1883. A legacy of fine gourmet teas, all handpicked and produced pesticide free for 130 years, Gorreana's teas have remained a staple in European pantries for over a century.
Indeed, the rare teas that the Gorreana tea estate and plantation have been producing in the Azores have been a European favorite ever since the art of tea cultivation was introduced in the Azores by two Chinese tea experts in September 1874. The culture and passion for tea quickly spread from European houses of Royalty to working classes where the European teas from the Azores were received with great excitement and fanfare all over the world.
Visited annually by tens of thousands, Gorreana's boutique, factory and museum located in the county of Ribeira Grande is the perfect place to enjoy a cup of fresh picked tea while admiring the original 'Marshalls' machinery that dates back to the 1840's. The scent of fresh tea and exotic flowers alongside sweeping ocean views is a paradise just as rare as our tea that owes its unique characteristics to our climate, the PH of our argillaceous soil acid and rich in minerals and, of course, the sea breeze that falls on the plantations as well as the artisan farming methods still in use in Gorreana. Those are the main reasons why, for over a century, the only place in Europe where tea is grown is here in Gorreana plantations in the luxurious island of São Miguel (Azores).
Nowadays Gorreana’s plantation covers 32 acres and presently produces about 33 tons per year. A small portion is destined for the Azorean market since the rest is exported to mainland Portugal, Germany, USA, Canada, Austria, France, Italy, Brazil, Angola, Japan, and many other countries that value quality above all.

The Azores (Portuguese: Açores pronounced [ɐˈsoɾɨʃ] or [ɐˈsoɾʃ]) are a Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, about 1,500 km (950 mi) from Lisbon and about 3,900 km (2,400 mi) from the east coast of North America. The two westernmost Azorean islands (Flores and Corvo) actually lie on the North American plate and are only 1,925 km (1,200 mi) from St. John's in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Azores' most significant industries are tourism, cattle raising for milk and meat, and fishing.
