Life is tough in Sundarban, comprising of over 40 islands in India, most of the transportation is by local ferries and a motorcycle with a trolly (important way out of the current economic crisis in developed economies and also holds important lessons for emerging economies), carting people and other household and construction material. the Roads are narrow, connecting villages on a single island.

WEST BENGAL TOURISM
Sir Daniel Mackinnon Hamilton, a Scotsman, had travelled to Kolkata to work for MacKinnon & McKenzie, a company with which he had family connections. The company sold tickets for the P&O shipping line, then one of the largest in the world. Hamilton became head of the company and master of an immense fortune, one of the richest men in British India. Another man may have taken his money and gone away but Hamilton set his eyes on the deltaic islands in south Bengal. In 1903, he bought 40 square kilometres (10,000 acres) of the tide country from the government – it included such islands as Gosaba, Rangabelia, and Satjelia. His efforts at developing these places brought in other people into these islands. They were people who dared not only to struggle against nature but also the predators that lived there – tigers, crocodiles, sharks and lizards. They killed so many people that Hamilton gave rewards to people who killed them.[4] In December 1932 Rabindranath Tagore visited and stayed at Gosaba in the house of Sir Daniel Hamilton.

Gosaba island
This is a beautiful island in the Sundarbans areas of West Bengal
Gosaba,Jatirampur,Pakhirala to Sajnekhali on cycle,Sundarban, West Bengal video 8
I got a ferry from Pakhiralaya and reached Sajnekhali. The river had choppy waters and the boat was not properly anchored and it kept on swaying. People in these parts are very helpful. The boatmen as well as co passengers would readily help to get my cycle on and off the boat.
This video shows the forest department office at entrance, the very informative mangrove interpretation centre and the sajnekhali tourist lodge. Apart from these three places the entire sajnekhali is the Sundarban swamp in which no one can go.
These three places are at the beginning of the forest which has an area of about 360 square kilometres and has various varieties birds animals and plants which cannot be travelled on foot. You can only see sajnekhali from rivers through ferry.

Gosaba,Jatirampur,Pakhirala to Sajnekhali on cycle,Sundarban, West Bengal video 1
Visiting Sundarban on cycle is very rare. Most of the tourists are picked up from Kolkata and brought to Canning, Basanti or Godkhali through car or buses and they travel to their destination in Western Sundarban through ferry service. One can go to jharkhali, Pakhiralaya, Dayapur, Satjelia,Sajnekhali and can even go to eastern sundarban through ferry service.
Jharkhali is the only place where one can reach by car or other mode of land transport from Kolkata without having to use ferry service. There are two bridges one at Canning and other at Sonakhali and both are motorable. For going to the remaining places in Sundarbans in the western part one has to use the ferry service.
If you are using your own car then the last point Where you have to keep the car is Ghoda Khali. Normally tour operators take advantage of scant knowledge but save you lot of hassles by picking you up from Kolkata and bring you to the required ferry Ghat and then take you to your desired destination in Sundarbans. But in case you want to know the best option is to reach till Godakhali and then catch a ferry/ferries to required point in Sundarban.
If you want to cover Eastern Sundarban through road you will have to cross rivers at two points namely Hasnabad and Dulduli but a big relief is presence of large ships / vessels in which your car bus even a truck can be transported across the water bodies. I think the bridge at Hasnabad to hingalganj zone shall be ready in another 6 months and then only the river at Dulduli would have to be crossed using the large ship. Your car would then reach Jogesganj. From here you can go to Shamsher Nagar which is the last village on the South Eastern side of India or you can go to Hemnagar from Jogesganj. I would suggest you to go to hemnagar for covering Eastern part of Sundarban. I've already mentioned that tour operators can take you to Eastern part from godkhali also. If you go through road route to cover Eastern Sundarbans you would come across a beautiful verdant town of Taki just 2 kilometres before Hasnabad.
In this video I had reached godkhali on cycle and had crossed the river to reach the town of Gosaba. This is the third week of December 2018 and most of the roads were being prepared. I must mention again that you cannot reach Gosaba by road. Since I wanted to explore the region on cycle I traversed through road. Roads in this zone are not at all motorable and this is perhaps because no cars or buses carrying tourist come to gosaba. People get down at godkhali and then take ferry service. Don't worry you would easily get three wheelers electric or otherwise for moving in this zone . You can go to Jati Rampur pakhiralaya and other places hiring electric auto rickshaw.

The village of Gosaba lies at the extreme ends of the Bengal peninsula, curving away from the port of Haldia, with the vast delta of the Sunderbans serving as its hinterland. Migratory birds flock at will and use this area as breeding grounds, locals use the Datta river also known as Gomdi River by the villagers to fish.
