When did Macau become part of China? history of Macau,One country two system
Macau is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People's Republic of China. In 1557 it was leased to Portugal as a trading post. While it was to remain under Chinese sovereignty, the Portuguese came to consider and administer it as a de facto colony. Following the signing of the Treaty of Nanking between China and Britain in 1842, and the signing of treaties between China and foreign powers during the 1860s, establishing the benefit of 'the most favored nation' for them, the Portuguese attempted to conclude a similar treaty in 1862, but the Chinese refused, owing to a misunderstanding over the sovereignty of Macau. In 1887 the Portuguese finally managed to secure an agreement from China that Macao was Portuguese territory, ending 330 years of uncertainty. In 1999 it was handed over to China. Macau was the last extant European territory in continental Asia.

About Macao..........
Macau or Macao officially the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is a special administrative region of China on the western side of the Pearl River estuary in southern China. With a population of 667,400 and an area of 32.9 km2 (12.7 sq mi), it is the most densely populated region in the world.
Macau was formerly a colony of the Portuguese Empire, after Ming China leased the territory as a trading post in 1557. Portugal governed the area under titular Chinese sovereignty and authority until 1887, when it was given perpetual colonial rights for Macau. The colony remained under Portuguese control until 1999, when it was transferred to China. As a special administrative region, Macau maintains separate governing and economic systems from that of mainland China.
Originally a sparsely populated collection of coastal islands, the territory has become a major resort city and the top destination for gambling tourism. It is the ninth-highest recipient of tourism revenue and its gaming industry is seven times larger than that of Vegas. Although the city has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world, it has severe inequality. Its GDP per capita by purchasing power parity is one of the highest in the world and higher than any country in the world in 2014 according to the World Bank.
Macau has a very high Human Development Index. The government of Macau calculates its own HDI.Macau has the fourth-highest life expectancy in the world.[11] The territory is highly urbanized and most development is built on reclaimed land; two-thirds of total land area is reclaimed from the sea.

As a journalist first for ATV, then TVB for 5 years I covered events leading up to the handover and beyond between 1995-2000.
On December 19th 1999 the the eve of Macau's historic handover from Portuguese Colony to Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China I recorded the daylong coverage.

MACAU (澳門) & THE PORTUGUESE INHERITANCE (II) (slideshow)
In this 2nd part of Macau & The Portuguese Inheritance we notice modern aspects of Macau after being incorporated in the People's Republic of China as a Special Administrative Region. The Tower of Macau, or better, Macau Tower Convention & Entertainment Centre (澳門旅遊塔會展娛樂中心) was created by the architecture firm of Craig Craig Moller, and built already under Chinese administration (2001). The Hotel Grand Lisboa Casino, for instance, is another spectacular building not erected under Portuguese rule, as also happens with the outstanding Venetian Casino Resort. However, the Portuguese inheritance is maintained, for instance, in buildings like the very elegant Hotel Casino Lisboa Macau, in the name of the streets, in the menu of restaurants, in a number of churches and in the catholic faith followed by thousands of Chinese. Indeed, Macau was administered by Portugal for 442 years. The Coloane Island is the place less attained by the modern Chinese era. The long list of Macau casinos are used by Chinese who are heavy gamblers; that is why the government of People's Republic of China only allows each Chinese to make use of the Macau casinos twice a year. People's Republic of China, or even Hong Kong, have no casinos at all. Macau and Hong Kong are going to be linked by a bridge already in construction (Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge).

Macau, China's Special Administrative Region (SAR)
There is a mixed use of the terms Macao and Macau in everyday use. Macao was an archaic Portuguese spelling; as Portuguese language evolved, Macao was gradually transformed into Macau and became widely used in modern Portuguese and English alike.
Since the handover in 1999, both Macao and Macau are officially recognized as correct English spellings, whereas Macau remains the official Portuguese spelling. However, Macao is relatively less used on the Internet. (source: macau.com)
Today Macau is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, and, like Hong Kong, benefits from the principle of one country, two systems. The tiny SAR is growing in size - with more buildings on reclaimed land - and in the number and diversity of its attractions. The greatest of these continues to be Macau's unique society, with communities from the East and West complementing each other, and the many people who come to visit.(source: Macau Government Tourist Office)

Mainland China
Mainland China, Chinese mainland or simply the mainland, is a geographical and political term to describe the geopolitical area under the direct jurisdiction of the People's Republic of China (PRC). It generally excludes the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau. The term mainland China, which avoids calling the area simply China and thereby recognizing the founding of the PRC as the China, was coined by the Kuomintang (KMT) after it took control of Taiwan, particularly after 1949, when the KMT-led Republic of China (ROC) government was defeated in the Chinese Civil War on the mainland and fled to Taiwan, and pledged to retake the Mainland. The KMT considers both sides of the Taiwan Strait, i.e. including Taiwan, as (one) China and one country; whereas Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) considers only mainland China as China and Taiwan (ROC) as Taiwan and that they are different countries.
There are two terms in Chinese for mainland. Namely, Dalu (simplified Chinese: 大陆; traditional Chinese: 大陸), which means continent, and Neidi (内地 / 內地), literally inland or inner land. In the PRC, the usage of the two terms are generally interchangeable and there is no prescribed method of reference in any jurisdiction. To emphasize equal footing in cross-strait relations, the term is used in official contexts with reference to Taiwan, with the PRC referring to itself as the mainland side (as opposed to the Taiwan side). But in its relations with Hong Kong and Macau, the PRC government refers to itself as the Central People's Government.

Chinese Premier Hails Economic, Social Progress of Macao
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang hailed the economic and social progress the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) has made since its return to the motherland in 1999.
On Monday, the first day of his three-day inspection tour in Macao, Li listened to a work report by the Macao SAR government and delivered a speech to local officials.
Under the leadership of the Macao Chief Executive, Chui Sai On, the Macao SAR government, Macao has achieved fruitful results in its full implementation of the one country, two systems principle and the Fundamental Law, said Li, it is praiseworthy that Macao has maintained a stable economy, a harmonious society and an orderly democratic political system under the background of weak global economy.
Li expressed the hope that the Macao SAR government resolutely implement the one country, two systems principle and highly autonomous policy and the fundamental law and steadily raise the governing efficiency, remain firm along the path of bringing about a proper diversified economy, take the initiative to connect with the country's development strategy and deepen its cooperation with the inland and actively create an open platform and pay attention to the deu ation of young people and children.
The central government has recently proposed many favorable policies toward Macao according to its fresh demand, including support to the annual Global Tourism Economy Forum in Macao and to the setting up of a Renminbi (RMB) settlement center for Portuguese-speaking countries and headquarters of China-Portuguese Speaking Countries Cooperation and Development Fund, said Li, Macao should take the opportunity to promote prosperity and benefit the people.
Li also ascended the Macao Tourism Tower to have a bird's eye-view of the whole region and heard a report on the five-year development strategy of Macao for the next five years. He encouraged Macao to make greater achievements in its economic transition and in social harmony and stability. More on:

ULTRA HD 4K MACAU COTAI STRIP 2019 | CASINO HOTELS | LAS VEGAS OF ASIA | 路氹城
#4k #ultrahd #cotaistrip #cotai #macau #vegas
Watch this spectacular night scene of Macau Cotai Strip, which shows the hotels in 4K crystal clear quality. The Cotai Strip is pretty much the Las Vegas of Asia, famous for being the gambling centre of Macau and Hong Kong. It is definitely the most fun place in Macau. Everything is just like Las Vegas, with casinos inside hotels, and entertainment shows every night, and more dining options than you can imagine. There are kids zones, indoor playgrounds in almost every hotel.
Along the Cotai Strip, you will find the Sheraton, Parisian, Conrad, Holiday Inn, Studio City, Venetian, Four Seasons, MGM, Wynn Palace, Galaxy, Banyan Tree, Okura, City of Dreams, Broadway, and so on.
The Cotai Strip is a term coined by Las Vegas Sands Corporation with regard to its building of a strip of hotel-casinos in the Cotai section of Macau, a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China. Cotai was the result of a major land reclamation project which joined the two islands of Coloane and Taipa, and is part of the Macau government's continuous efforts to expand the region's territory. The reclaimed land in Cotai is to be mainly used for casino developments and Las Vegas Sands Corporation envisioned that their development of several adjacent properties would comprise an area that would resemble the Las Vegas Strip, albeit on a considerably smaller scale.[1][2] Over the past decade, the layout of the Cotai Strip has also slowly developed into a grid like layout with major hotels and casinos (Wynn Palace, MGM Cotai and Galaxy Macau) built not directly connected to the 'strip' as opposed to Las Vegas strip with the majority of major hotels and casinos with front access to the Las Vegas strip.
