Man shot in troubled area of Southside Belize City
For the latest news across Belize, visit:
There were two shootings over the past twenty-four hours. The first took place sometime around six o’clock on Thursday evening on south side Belize City. Thirty-seven year old Jason Longsworth was at a house on McKay Boulevard talking with his common-law-wife at their front door when they were approached by two men on separate bicycles. The men opened fire in the couple’s direction and Longsworth was hit to the lower back and the right leg. Assistant Commissioner of Police Chester Williams told News Five today that the investigation shows that the shooting is not linked to the murder of Nicasio Zuniga, which occurred two days ago in the general area.
Why “National Colonial Museum” is a Misnomer
For the latest news across Belize, visit:
The National Cultural Heritage Bill is headed back to the House of Representatives next week Friday. It is meant to provide a framework for the preservation of historically and culturally significant buildings, particularly in Belize City. The Bill is tied to funding from Taiwan for the Downtown Rejuvenation Project, which includes a renovation of the former Government House, now the House of Culture; the Commercial Center; and City Hall on North Front Street. But the plans, as originally expressed to make the House of Culture a “National Colonial Museum,” have raised ire in certain sectors. Most notably, former NICH president Yasser Musa argues that the idea is retrograde and demeaning to national identity. Well it appears that there are some changes to the plans, according to Nigel Encalada of the Institute for Social and Cultural Research. He told us that NICH screwed up by not properly communicating their ideas.

Future Museum Plans Include Houses of Culture and Downtown “Eco-Museum”
For the latest news across Belize, visit:
Strange as it may sound, the Museum of Belize is not a national museum – most of its collections detail life in the Old Capital from its days as a colonial outpost to its modern depiction. With space limited at its location, the Museum regularly shifts around its exhibits. But future expansion, says Director Alexis Salazar, will come through the Houses of Culture established in five of Belize’s six districts. One of those, the former Government House across town, is in the middle of renovations to turn it into a greater repository for Belize City history – a history which will be on display throughout the downtown as a result of the Downtown Rejuvenation Project which includes the waterfront, City Hall, and Commercial Cent

Gang Members Trooped to Hattieville Ramada Under Emergency Powers Detention Order
For the latest news across Belize, visit:
Seven days ago in the dead of the night more than one hundred purported gang members from the Mayflower/Banak and George Streets were detained and placed in c ells at the Queen Street and Raccoon Street police stations. The round-up happened within-hours of a proclamation of the controversial special public emergency zones in the two south side areas. Some were released but the majority remained in lockdown until today when they were bussed to the Belize Central Prison where they will be held until the end of the month despite growing concern for the violation of their human rights. The new law allows the police to detain and jail the gangs without charges for thirty days. So what is next for the men who have not been charged and much less convicted? In an exclusive interview with prison officials, News Five’s Isani Cayetano was behind the prison walls today to find out the process of their incarceration. Here is that story.

Belize City limits reach out to Mile 8 on the Western Highway and Mile 14 on the Northern Highway, at the Haulover Bridge that spans the mouth of the old Belize River where it disgorges into the Caribbean Sea. The city proper is split into two areas: North side Belize City, bounded by the Haulover Creek and ending in the east at the Fort George area, and Belize City South side, extending to the outskirts of the city to the Western Highway (now also known as the George Price Highway. The Belize City north side is considered the safest and most prosperous area of this population center. Good hotels, a casino and the Museum of Belize – featured in our Top Ten Things To In Belize – are located in that zone as are the cruise ship and marine terminals. The southside has a couple of tourist attractions, namely historic St. John’s Cathedral and the House of Culture.Four bridges starting from the west and going east, the new Chetumal Street Bridge opened in 2016 but as of this writing with unpaved road access (unofficially called the Dean Barrow Bridge), the BelCan (Belize-Canada), BelChina (Belize-China) and the original Belize City Swing bridge (the only functioning manually operated bridge in the world) join both sides of Belize City. Belize City’s coordinates are 17°15′ North longitude and 88°45′ West latitude. This city is the largest population center in the country with well over eighty thousand inhabitants sprawling over the delta formed by the Haulover Creek which branches off the Belize River. Belize City itself is no longer the nation’s capital, but remains the commercial capital and home to the largest sea port and airport in the country and location of the Belize Tourism Village where cruise ships dock. The city offers the visitor an eclectic combination of rustic, old-fashioned, run-down Caribbean charm and bustling modernity. As a seaport the city built itself from the East inwards so most of the older colonial structures are near the coast. Efforts are underway to preserve several of these buildings such as the Supreme Court, Government House formerly the home of the British governor, and the oldest Anglican church in Central America St. John’s Cathedral. These impressive structures have survived hurricanes and other challenges such as city fires.
