Parks Make Life Better in Calexico, California
During our 2018 Parks Make Life Better Tour across the state of California, we had the honor of visiting Adrian C. Cordova Park. City leaders built this park and inclusive playground to honor a hometown hero. Adrian Cordova was a US Marine and a member of the Calexico Police Department before his watch tragically ended on November 1, 2007. Learn more at gametime.com/cprs-tour-2018-calexico

Watch the video and see the dark side of Calexico.
Calexico is a city in Imperial County, California. The population was 38,572 at the 2010 census, up from 27,109 at the 2000 census. Calexico is about 122 miles (196 km) east of San Diego and 62 miles (100 km) west of Yuma, Arizona. The name Calexico is a portmanteau of California and Mexico, which, like that of its adjacent sister city of Mexicali, emphasizes its identity as a border city.
Calexico began as a tent city of the Imperial Land Company, was founded in 1899, and incorporated in 1908. The Imperial Land Company converted desert land into a fertile setting for year-round agriculture. The originally proposed names were Santo Tomas or Thomasville. The first post office in Calexico opened in 1902.[3]
Hundreds of acres are now being devoted to industrial parks, and commercial and incentives are offered to encourage industrial development. The name Calexico was coined from a combination of the words California and Mexico. Mexicali is a similarly named city directly across the international border from Calexico.
In parts Calexico looks like that it was hit by an earthquake and nobody bothered to rebuild it.

Calexico: The Untold Stories of a Bordertown
This is a documentary about my hometown Calexico, California. Calexico has a unique problem that only border towns have. Many people from the neighboring city across the border go to Calexico to benefit from a better job, education, or even goods bought in the United States. The fact that they are privileged enough to go back to Mexico on a daily basis is what affects the city in terms of resources. Schools are overcrowded and the unemployment rate is at an all time high. This video expresses these concerns and offers a solution that can get us closer to a better future. People need to understand that, without an education, the city is not going anywhere. Everyone will be fighting for the low-income jobs instead of careers that can make a difference in the community. Calexico doesn't get too much attention so it is my job to make this video reach as many people as possible and spread the awareness of the struggles people in the border have to endure.
The City of Calexico, California needs a new City Manager.
Do you have what it takes?
The city of Calexico recently lost it's city manager and a new one is in need.
So, to help out this community, I am putting out the call for any people with experience to come and apply for the position.
The challenges are many.
Calexico already has a budget loss issue, as does the whole state of California. Also, there are other issues with the businesses, economic development, pollution, unemployment, old infrastructure, and the fact that it's cheaper to cross the border and buy in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico.
Mexicali has close to a million people, and has a wide financial base. However, long lines to cross the border discourage middle and upper class citizens from shopping in the United States. As it stands, only working class Mexicans cross the border to shop in Calexico. The rest wait an hour to drive across and shop at a mall in El Centro.
There are a lot of challenges, but also a lot of opportunities. If someone wanted to make a name for themselves and gain a lot of attention, Calexico is the place to do it.
Someone with experience with a border community, especially Mexico, is desired. Also someone familiar with economic development, Going Green, and who can speak Spanish fluenty is desired. The pay may not be much, but that is all the more incentive to make Calexico economically viable. The potential is there.

We want President Bill Clinton to visit Imperial County and Calexico, California.
Since President Bill Clinton will be visiting San Diego, California soon, can his travel team arrange for him to travel through and visit Imperial County, and in particular Calexico, California.
It is my feeling that there is a lack of federal and state government attention to the major health issues affecting Imperial County, such as poor air quality and the New River sewage flowing across the border from Mexico.
All President Clinton would have to do is visit the border community and the news press media following could realize there are stories of dirty water flowing next to residential neighborhoods and schools, air quality so bad that one out of five inhabitants suffer asthma and/or allergies, that there is a crumbling infrastructure, high unemployment, an economic system that is broken, an education system that is the poorest in the country, and that the Salton Sea is going to become a disaster area with huge economic impact.
Please spread the word and hopefully someone in the Clinton Campaign, or even Bernie Sanders or Donald Trump presidential campaigns, can bring attention to this forgotten corner of the United States.
Thank you.
Easter Earthquake: One Year Later in Calexico
One year ago, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Imperial Valley border area. The Easter earthquake caused no fatalities on this side of the border, but it brought structural damage and financial hardship to Calexico. Reporter Tom Fudge and photographer Katie Euphrat have this look at Calexico a year later.

Cities are blacked out, hospitals evacuated, some towns simply shut down --- after a seven point two magnitude earthquake struck just south of the U-S border in the Mexican town of Mexicali.
The quake -- one of the strongest to hit that region in decades -- was felt as far away as Nevada.
SOT: USGS Seismologist
Officials say at least 100 people were injured -- most of them hit by falling objects. Towns in and around the epicenter are without power -- and that is expected to be the case for some time. Even 100 miles away -- in San Diego -- a hotel had to be evacuated after cracks were found in the floor.
SOT: Alex Young, Hotel Guest
Scientists say the quake occurred along the Laguna Salada fault -- which last unleashed a similar-sized quake in 18-92. Since then, there have been some magnitude five-tremblors.
SOT: Lucy Jones
This is California''s largest earthquake in nearly 20 years. In 19-92, a seven point three magnitude quake struck east of Los Angeles.
No tsunami warnings were issued for this earthquake. Several aftershocks have been reported.
