“Grand Canyon” of West Bengal – Gongoni. Located in the small town of Garbeta, this fascinating wide gorge of red soil stands on the banks of river Silabati. Locally known as “Gongoni Danga”. In the plain lands of Bengal, such a landscape is uncommon and exceptional, which is why this gorge is often referred to as Grand Canyon of Bengal. Recently a Staircase has been built by the West Bengal Government so that one can easily walk down into the Canyon.
We started our ride in the early morning. The road we took is Kolkata -- Kharagpur -- Garbeta (Gangani) -- Bishnupur -- Arambag -- Dankuni.
This time, I have ridden with a group of avenger owners club officially known as a TAG. The Avenger Gods (TAG) is an official Bajaj Avenger Owners Club. The ride was sponsored by Bajaj.

Gangani, Grand Canyon of Bengal
Going
From Howrah Station, you can board the Rupasi Bangla Express in the morning or the Purulia Express in the afternoon to reach Garbeta station. From there, hire an autorickshaw to reach Gangani field. Buses are also available from Howrah, Kharagpur or and Midnapore.
Staying
There are a few private hotels for meals and rooms.
Either it’s nothing or it’s something more than extraordinary. That’s what I was thinking as I stood mesmerised on the field overlooking the colossal ruins of Gangani. It’s nature’s creation at its best. If you haven’t been to the US ever and want to see The Grand Canyon in miniature form, visit this place, about 179km from the city, at Garbeta in West Midnapore on any sunny day.
With the Shilabati river flowing through a 70ft-deep gorge and the adjoining places taking the form of different shapes and figures because of erosion, it’s a treat to the eye. The formations on the wall of the gorge spreading from east to west are something similar to the archaeological sculptures of Ajanta and Ellora but the only difference is that the ones at Gangani were not created by human hand. There was a pagoda-shaped formation that caught my attention even from a distance. Unless known beforehand one would never be able to identify that it was an effect of erosion on rocks, not a manmade shrine! It’s really astonishing how effortlessly nature can make such creations.
After taking a bird’s-eye view of the area for some time, I decided to get a closer look. The steps carved into the side of the hill made of red laterite soil took me down.
As I moved slowly on the grassy field, various structures and sights came into view. All the structures, namely fort, lion, ship, pillar and more, appeared very much alive. When I stood below the fort, I got the feeling that the guards from the pillars were shouting at me, forbidding me to move ahead. The lion sitting on the top of the wall seemed to be guarding the main gate of a palace.
As I was walking through the ruins, I felt as if I was transported to a historic age in a time machine. I went in front of the pagoda-like structure seen from the top and even a critical look up close could not disperse my feelings that it was not a real pagoda but a natural lookalike.
After wandering for some time we sat on the bank of Shilabati, which was running almost dry. We saw some local people catching fish in the knee-deep water.
Afternoon had already passed and evening was approaching fast. The red colour of the walls of the gorge was further deepened by the rays of the setting sun. The whole place seemed to be on fire. Slowly the light died and soon an absolute darkness engulfed the place. We sat there wondering whether any modern laser show could match the lighting effect of nature we just witnessed.
Besides the field of Gangani, there are some other places like the Sarbamangala Mandir and Radhaballav Mandir that you can visit in Garbeta. History and myths are attached with all of them.

Grand Canyon of India - Incredible India - Gongoni Gorge, Garbeta, West Bengal
Garbeta, West Bengal: while walking and sweating like in hell as temperature was close to 42 degree Celsius, we suddenly found a huge footprint on the red soil road. Asking the rickshaw puller, he replied that's a footprint of an elephant
Feeling a bit scared, it then come to my mind one could have met big elephants with no rescue near me!!!
But let me tell you the story from its beginning: After a short trip to Bishnupur at Bankura District, we boarded to a local train to Kharagpur to reach home. As it was Monday and no rush office hours, we did not book seats. We decided to get down to Garbeta, 25km from Bishnupur Town and wait for the next coming train. Checking the time schedule showed us that we had 2 hours free before the train to come.
How to find something to do with 2 hours? We asked some local peoples about what nearby tourist destinations to spend that free time. All suggested us to go Gongoni, 5km away from the railway station. We decided to hire two rickshaws and started our journey to the mystery land of Gongoni.
Garbeta is an important village town in West Midnapore. The village was very restless few years ago due to political crisis, but now the entire area is very peaceful. We crossed Garbeta College and took the red laterite soil road on our left, where a pillar indicates you about Gongoni. We had to watch out because the zigzag road is so muddy due to heavy rain earlier.
Then we felt literally astonished by what we saw!
What an amazing place! You don't need to go Arizona in United States to see Grand Canyon. Here stands Gongoni with its magnificent beauty, while the beautiful Shilabati River flows down with bunch of white Kash Grass on its riverbed.
Gongoni is considered as a gorge and it's 100 times smaller than the Grand Canyon but you have to keep in mind that such landscapes are very very uncommon in Eastern India, so, locals consider it as a large canyon.
From Gongoni Gorge's cliff you can be delighted by an entire 180 degree gorgeous view. I am quite sure that after having seen that you will ask yourself if the word gorgeous is derived from gorge? And the answer is definitely Yes. Because, you can be find gorgeous things only at a gorge!
We started to walk down to the stone staircase, a really amazing place where you can see a few small water streams here and there. Just follow them; every bend is waiting for you with a new surprise.
From the riverbed of Shilabati, the gorge looked even more gorgeous. The Earth made this place with her own hand. You can see almost all examples of different type of soil erosion at this place.
Nature meets with the Mother Earth here. It makes numerous structures by its own hand, which is out of reach of human activities and thus free of any alteration. Some looked like a natural hanging stage and some like the lobby of Titanic. Raise your hands and scream, it gives you heavenly feelings!
Some areas of Gongoni looked like ruins of heritage series of temples. Surprisingly, they are not human made. Each and everything was made by Nature.
At Gongoni you can see the magic of soil erosion at its best. They built caves also.
Words are not enough for Gongoni. It's better to go there and taste the supernatural environment. I'm going again, do you come?

Unseen and non visited new tourist spot in West Bengal having a breathtaking sight. It is a recently discovered canyon in Garbeta, 13 kms from Bishnupur that too beside Shilaboti river.
GONGONI || GARBETA || “Grand Canyon” of West Bengal
Whenever the word “Canyon” is used about a destination in India, the first name which pops into mind is that of the hill station of Mahabaleswar. Yet, in the most unusual place in India lies a full-fledged gorge which at first look resembles a miniature version of Grand Canyon of Arizona, USA.
Welcome to the “Grand Canyon” of West Bengal – Gongoni. Located in the small town of Garbeta, this fascinating wide gorge of red soil stands on the banks of river Silabati. Locally known as “Gongoni Danga” or “Gongoni Khola”, the gorge is a handiwork of Mother Nature through years of soil erosion coupled with some assistance from the river. The water body flows through the gorge during monsoon.
