GONGONI || GARBETA || “Grand Canyon” of West Bengal
Whenever the word “Canyon” is used about a destination in India, the first name which pops into mind is that of the hill station of Mahabaleswar. Yet, in the most unusual place in India lies a full-fledged gorge which at first look resembles a miniature version of Grand Canyon of Arizona, USA.
Welcome to the “Grand Canyon” of West Bengal – Gongoni. Located in the small town of Garbeta, this fascinating wide gorge of red soil stands on the banks of river Silabati. Locally known as “Gongoni Danga” or “Gongoni Khola”, the gorge is a handiwork of Mother Nature through years of soil erosion coupled with some assistance from the river. The water body flows through the gorge during monsoon.

The Grand Canyon of Bengal: Gangoni by Tourist Destination
The Grand Canyon of Bengal is a nice short stretch along the Shilabati river, with distinct colored layered of mud packed and eroded by water and wind to become interesting landforms. The place is about 4 hrs drive from Kolkata, 1 hr from Bishnupur. Garhbeta is the nearest town and the road from there goes off the main road for about 1 km to the canyon lip. If you are coming via train you have to get down Garhbeta and take an auto to reach this place. The place can enjoy the beauty of the nature, on the both side of the roads its surrounded by Nut trees , Arjun trees and few Shaal trees. The leaves of the trees are partly orange and partly green. The geological formations are just awesome to look at. The meandering Silabati river cutting through the landscape produces this so called Grand canyon of Bengal. The wide red soil gorge is locally called Gangoni Danga or Gangoni Khola. Formed after a long period of natural soil erosion and river Silabati movement, the Gangoni gorge is a beautiful and unique marvel that is frequented by locals and tourists alike. River Shilabati was flowing nearly 100 to 120 ft below the gorge. Erosion of soil due to flow of water from top to bottom, over the years after years, created this colossal creation on the walls of the gorge. Once you reach the top will see the stretch of the Grand Canyon of Bengal, of various shapes and sizes. There is a steep flight of steps and then sloped ground leading to the river bed. The sunset or sunrise times are good for watching the play of colors. Just hike down the slopes towards the river and explore the unique landscape that's not quite commonly seen The sculpture done by nature and time on the canyon slopes is so engrossing. These have taken the shape of various archaeological design, one can visualize a palace, a face of animal, a fort, a Cave etc. No human hand has been used to create these sculpture. Mother nature has developed this canvas in its own way. The local laterite soil (rusty-red soil) gave a texture of fresh coat of painting, somewhere it is deep and somewhere it is light. Gangoni finds a mention in the epic of Mahabharata as well. Locals believe that this is the place where Bheema, one of the Pandavas, killed a demon called Bakasura. In monsoon, the canyons are filled up with the river water. But during winter, you can get down there and explore the small cave looking canyons. The quiet flowing Shilabati River gave the place another dimension.
