Coastal Cottage On Grand Manan Island
The relative isolation of an island community isn’t for everybody, but for many it would be a dream come true. Today Doris shares with us her charming coastal cottage and the island where it is located…
My husband Kim and I have always been interested in the rocky coastline of northern Maine and Atlantic Canada. While visiting Maine and New Brunswick one summer we happened upon Grand Manan Island and took the ferry over to explore. I was smitten at once! The people of the island are warm and welcoming, and the the island is unspoiled and gorgeous.
Years passed and one day while looking at real estate online (a common occurrence) I saw this adorable little cottage on Grand Manan so I watched it online for months and months and months. Last summer while a friend and I were headed to vacation on Prince Edward Island we decided to take a side trip over to the island and have a look. That first visit happened to be when the Lupines were in bloom, adding to the charm of the cottage. Two weeks later I was back with my husband for a closer look and by the end of summer it was ours.
The cottage is 680 ft2 (63.2 m2). We are not sure of its age but it feels old. The previous owner had done most of the repairs and upgrades, leaving only the kitchen cabinetry and a plumbing issue to be finished. When you walk in the front door you can basically see the whole place. Entry, living and dining areas are located in the front room, with the kitchen and bath in the back rooms. The bedroom is accessed by a ladder in the front room.
The whole cottage is surrounded by a large deck for outdoor living when the weather is good. We have planted a small herb garden just off the deck and will add a vegetable garden when we retire. At some point we will build a small bedroom off the back as the ladder to the loft may become troublesome as we age.
The cottage is close enough for our children to go for a vacation or just visit over a long weekend. We try to be there as much as possible but are looking forward to retirement so we can spend the entire summer. Grand Manan has natural geological wonders of interest, hiking trails, whale watching, sea kayaking, beaches, light houses, a museum, an art gallery, a phenomenal bakery, eclectic shops and more. A wonderfully peaceful place to vacation…or live. I wish I was there right now!

Smiles Green - Life Stories
Smiles Green - Life Stories is a documentary about Oliver “Smiles” Green, a spry 97-year-old man. At the tender age of 12, he purchased his first boat for $25, and spent the next 53 years earning his living as a fisherman. Since his retirement, he has traded full lobster traps for a full dinner table. This is a true human-interest story about a man who means everything to a culture. Smiles Green is a brother, a soul mate, a father and the grandfather of an entire island.
We held a showing of this film in August 2010 at the Grand Manan Art Gallery on GM Island, NB, Canada. The exhibition consisted of the film screening and Nicole Wolf's 'Sea of Faces' photography series centered around the men who fish on the island. Visit Nicole's website at nicolewolfphotography.com

The New Brunswick Museum
The New Brunswick Museum, located in Saint John, New Brunswick, is Canada's oldest continuing museum. The New Brunswick Museum was officially incorporated as the Provincial Museum in 1929 and received its current name in 1930, but its history goes back much further. Its lineage can be traced back another eighty-eight years to 1842 and to the work of Dr. Abraham Gesner.
Abraham Gesner was born in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia in 1797. His childhood fascination with scientific experiments led him to study in London, England where he became a physician. After only a few years of practice in Nova Scotia, he moved to New Brunswick in 1837 to become a full-time geologist. In 1838, he became New Brunswick's Provincial Geologist - the first such appointment in Canada. This position lasted until 1842 when Gesner turned to making a living by displaying his collection of rocks, minerals and curiosities to the public.
On April 5, 1842 Gesner opened the Museum of Natural History, the precursor of the New Brunswick Museum, in one room of the Mechanics' Institute on Carleton Street, in Saint John. Unfortunately, income from his newly founded museum was not enough to solve Gesner's financial problems. In 1843, his collection passed on to his creditors who, in turn, donated it to the Saint John Mechanics' Institute.
Renamed the Mechanics' Institute Museum in 1846, an annual report dating from 1863 described it as, a large and valuable collection of minerals, a great variety of zoological specimens, and many Chinese, Indian and other curiosities [that] frequently receives additions from foreign sea captains and others who get into their possession foreign articles of an attractive description.
When the Mechanics' Institute closed in 1890, the Natural History Society of New Brunswick acquired the collection and the museum was moved, first to the then new Market Building then, in 1906, to 72 Union Street. Under the care of its curator and later director, the entomologist Dr. William McIntosh, the museum's collections and activities expanded until a new building was essential. In 1934 a new Provincial museum facility on Douglas Avenue was officially opened by Prime Minister R.B. Bennett.
As of 1942, the collections, building and properties of the museum officially became the property of the people of New Brunswick. Today a Provincial institution funded by the Province of New Brunswick, the New Brunswick Museum continues to collect, preserve, study and exhibit the Province's natural and cultural heritage. As well as having a remarkable natural sciences collection, the museum has expanded to include one of the largest collections of 19th century decorative arts and Canadiana in the Atlantic Provinces.
By 1992, the museum had outgrown its Douglas Avenue location, and plans were made to develop new exhibition galleries in a central Saint John location. In April 1996, the New Brunswick Museum officially opened at Market Square in leased space in uptown Saint John (45.2729°N 66.0651°W). The Market Square Exhibition Centre offers three floors and 60,000 square feet (6,000 m2) of exhibition spaces and a wide range of public programs. The Collections Centre, the Archives and Research Library, and the Head Office continue to be situated at the Douglas Avenue location.

Baby girl born with a trunk worship as Lord Ganesha
A baby girl born with a 'trunk' has become the center of attraction in a village in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. The family gave her name Laxmi. People are flocking to see her believing that she is an incarnation of Lord Ganesha. Devotees spoon fed her to get the blessings from her.
Ganesha is always portrayed with an elephant’s head, he is the personification of all intellectual activities, his large head and tummy symbolize his ability to store a large amount of knowledge (hence the proverbial “memory of an elephant”), his large ears gather information, and his long trunk can seek out knowledge even in the most inaccessible places.
The child has a protuberance between her two eyes which people believe resembles the trunk of Lord Ganesha.
The people from far places have swarmed the modest house of a family of labourers to get a glimpse of the 'divine' baby.
This girl is the fourth child in the family and perfectly healthy.
Some people believe this baby is an incarnation of Lord Ganesha.
People haven't stopped coming in since the news of the birth of the 'divine' baby spread.
According to doctors this protrusion is a result of gene mutation which can be caused by malnutrition and increased pollution levels.
If the family chooses, they can go for a corrective surgery for the child at a later stage in life.

Hopewell Rocks, New Brunswick - Canada HD Travel Channel
The Hopewell Rocks, also known as Flowerpot Rocks, are located at Hopewell Cape near Moncton, the second largest city in New Brunswick, Canada. According to the Guinness Book of Records (1975), the Bay of Fundy has the highest tides in the world and the tidal erosion created the Hopewell Rocks.
At the Hopewell Rocks, the extent of the tidal is recognizable particularly well. The Hopewell Rocks are located in the northern foothills of the Bay of Fundy, called Chignecto Bay. The bay is up to the 15 km wide and at low tide, the water pulls out of the bay to a large extent. During that time one can stroll over the seabed between the elevations which look like mushrooms; during high tide the rocks transform into islands.
From Moncton our journey leads towards Prince Edward Iceland.
By the way one encounters everywhere in Canada a railway museums, not surprising because the railroad played an important role in the development of the country.

Fredericton-Boyce Farmer's Market - Travel Video PostCard™
Fredericton, the capital of New Brunswick, ( a Canadian Maritime province, is not the kind of city where you'd expect a savory, colorful , high-energy outdoor farmers' market.
It's not Marrakesh or Istanbul, but it is a very cool, complete market with lots of exciting colors and smells. (
Outside the air is redolent with smoky barbeque mostly from Elke's Truck ( Huge Sausages, Bratwurst With Lots of Garlic $3.50), mixing with Kangs Chinese stall ( Spring Rolls and Wanton Specialties) and the nearby Thai Food Stand ( Delicious Pad Thai $5.50; Chicken Curry Rice $5.00 ).
Then of course, add the tangy smell of Souvlaki ( $7.00) at The Taste of Greek and the taste off at Chickadee Larder to determine the best whole grain mustard, and you're already smiling and only just a few feet into the Fredericton Farmers' Market, considered one of Canada's top 10.
New Brunswick ( has lots of surprises for curious visitors. It's the only province in the confederation that is constitutionally bilingual, and has a wonderful mix of unspoiled nature and active cities, like Fredericton.
Inside, the cavernous market is jammed with all kinds of fresh produce and the sweetness of fresh- baked goods like the breads at Ezekiel's. Using wheat barley, beans and lentils (check out Ezekiel 4:9 in the Bible), the bakery's goods are made of ancient grains and the breads snuggle against rows and rows of oranges, deep green avocados, scented pineapples and mounds of bright red plump strawberries.
My favorite, and everyone else's too, it seems, is the cheese market, not far from Stone Works where for 6 bucks you can get the first blade of your pocket knife sharpened, and a buck fifty for each blade thereafter.
Looking for French cheeses or Scandinavian ( Havarti, Lappi or Danish Blue), this is the place. How about Goat Milk Cheese (Tomme De Chevre, Feta)? It's next to the Holland cheeses, next to the black olives and the rich selection of Swiss and Farm House cheeses.
There's a raised platform that serves huge breakfasts of fresh omelets and home fries and good coffee. But I was mesmerized by Sam the Juice Man where lines of blenders were whirling and clunking away turning piles of bright oranges into fresh-squeezed orange juice, making a dramatic sculpture of used oranges, piled higher and higher, almost toppling onto the deep blues and reds of the berry stalls.
It was fun to be back outside and breathe in the mingled smoke of so many ethnic foods. But now the plants and flowers were out in rows, and ladies were showing off hand-spun socks and mittens for the cold New Brunswick winters.
The people are so good natured, as I have known them to be throughout the provinces, and in fact, throughout Canada, if I can generalize.
I passed tables filled with newly-picked rhubarb and beets and bunches of carrots, watched a group of actors in costume promoting a play of some kind, and enjoyed the good-spirited, excited mix of French and English and much laughter.
I wanted a lobster roll very badly but knew we were heading to the small island of Grand Manan, known for its lobster, so I bought jar of jam instead, some mix of berries. Didn't matter exactly what kind, I was just very happy to have been here at the Fredericton Farmers' Market.
Before leaving Fredericton, walk a few blocks and stop in at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery ( a quiet, unassuming museum by the St. John River. Like most of the province, it's a quiet treasure
