Muslim prayer in Chefchaouen
We can hear the salat al-'asr (late afternoon) prayer from the Mosque Onsar near our hotel in Chefchaouen, Morocco, just hours before Ramadan begins.
BACKPACKER - ENG - From Fes El-Balì to Chefchaouen (Morocco)
BACKPACKER - English Version - From Fes El-Balì to Chefchaouen (Morocco) - NoPainNoGlory.TK by BackpackerR
Fes or Fez, the holy city of Morocco, 980 feet above sea level, the bottom of a fertile valley. It is the provincial capital. The old town, its buildings, its markets and its mosques, one of the most attractive of the whole Islamic world.
For the population of Morocco is the third largest city and the oldest imperial city and this is the prevalence of secular prestige and importance of its ancient university on culture and art of the Muslim North Africa.
You will find it written by all parties, and I do not deny it, enter the medina of Fes el Bali, seems really to make a trip to the Middle Ages.
Colors, sounds and smells, dominate the senses, the first time will be stunned, is a fascinating experience!
The medina is UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Morocco food is spectacular! The spices are unique!
Costs 5 Dirhams, you can enjoy the snails, a gastronomic delight! The stand is located on the street, and between Talaa Seghira Derb el-Horr.
Try some of the myriad of street stalls, delicious sandwiches with meat cooked, the flavor of a thousand spices, joy and passion in the process! All this costs between 10 and 20 dirhams, 1 - 2 euro to be paid for a single meal.
I recommend a meal in a restaurant elite, which can cost 70-100 dirhams.
La Kasbah!
At the entrance of the Medina, at Bab Bou Jeloud, this restaurant gives you the opportunity to dine on a terrace where you can admire the medina. The menu, tagine, cous cous and grilled meat to satisfy your palate!
The only means of transport in the heart of the medina are donkeys, they feel constantly scream Ballaké which in Arabic means caution.
As you will notice that the gas arrives in the medina with the ass!
Arrived in Chefchaouen in the late afternoon, I went in the main square of the medina, Plaza Uta el-Hammam,
in a cafe where I enjoyed a mint tea, watching what was happening around me.
In this square you can admire the Grand Mosque and the walls of the Kasbah, a central fountain, very characteristic.
The medina is characterized by narrow streets, colored with white walls and blue doors, the white reflects the sun, and heat, blue for mosquitoes,
has kindly described as a local resident.
Different the medina of Fez, this is smaller and it is hard to lose orientation.
The medina of Chefchaouen was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
One of the must-see attractions are the waterfalls of Chefchaouen in Ras-El-Maa, crossed the bridge you can admire the ruins of a mosque, now abandoned for a century.
For the more ambitious I highly recommend an excursion to the Jebel, for 4 - 5 hours, part near the Camping Azilane, following the road to Ain Tissimlane.
The trail is marked by a yellow stripe and white marked on the rocks.
I went for an hour, then for lack of time and forced back, I had to give up, so it's a company that will be taken!
If you want more information on excursions to be made in Chefchaouen area, contact the tourist office
which also makes use of a good expert guide for a half-day tour will cost 120 dirham.
To sleep advice Mouritania Hotel, a magnificent structure with a tiled courtyard, a bed is available at 5 euro per night, also has an excellent internet point.
Do not miss the cafe in Chefchaouen and Bab-Ansar Cafe, near the Falls of Ras-al-Maa, Aziz and Patisserie, a bakery for delicious breakfasts.
From what I have seen Chefchaouen is a city to relax and go hiking.
If you want to use a bath, you should go to the center form alive, in the Atlas Riad Chefchaouen, the hotel that stands at the top of Chefchaouen, treatments from 50 to 400 dirhams.
Do not miss the steam room, Barakat Douches, 8 Dirham, times, for men has opened in the morning, for women, in the afternoon.
To take the bus to Fes, I decided to walk the 6 miles separating from Dardari Chefchaouen, in the street I had the opportunity to see children returned from school that is offered as information guides, taxi riders, loggers, makers bricks, and so on and so forth!
The view is breathtaking, the food flavor is strident, the people are fantastic, life full of rhythm and joy ....
Morocco fantastic! See you soon!

MOROCCO - call to prayer in Chefchaouen, the Blue City - 2/22/18
I had traveled a lot in Muslim countries in SE Asia and the subcontinent, and always loved hearing the call to prayer. But what I wasn't prepared for was with so many mosques in such close proximity here, when one starts and then the others join in, with the chorus reverberating off the walls and the hills.... it gave me chills and a lump in my throat, it was so beautiful.
The call to prayer is done five times during the day: dawn, mid-day, afternoon, sunset and night. This was mid-day -- on a beautiful early spring day with high clouds and warm sun.

View of Chefchaouen from Spanish Mosque - Study Abroad in Morocco
View of Chefchaouen after hiking to the Spanish Mosque.
Charming Chefchaouen, Morocco
Chefchaouen was initially a base for Riffian berber tribes from which attacks on Portuguese Ceuta were made. After the fall of Granada in 1492 there was a wave of Muslim and Jewish refugees that flooded into Morocco. Here they introduced a distinct Andalusian architectural style including tiled roofs, hanging balconies, and courtyards. The result is breathtaking. Narrow cobbled-stoned streets meander through a maze of blue. Thankfully dead end alleys are painted white which is incredibly helpful when getting around.
The main square, the Plaza Uta el-Hammam, is the town social center with cafes and restaurants across from the Grand Mosque and newly restored Kasbah. This is the best and cheapest place to eat. It was our first taste of Morocco.
Chefchaouen is also a great place to shop. Wood crafts and berber jewelery is prolific and made locally, but the the wool garments and rugs are the speciality here.
Our accommodation was on a rooftop terrace with excellent views of the Plaza Uta -el Hammam and the Kasbah. After it cools a bit, heading out of the western gate to the falls makes for a pleasant walk. There are some great hikes into the Rif mountains from Chefchaouen, if you are a little less ambitious there is a trail up to the ruined Mosque that affords some great views of the town.

Pre-Dawn Call To Prayer - Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, Morocco, Africa
As-salatu Khayrun Minan-nawm. (Prayer is better than sleep) is a verse inserted into only the pre-dawn Adhan, or Islamic Call to Prayer. Here is the pre-dawn call from our hotel balcony beside Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, which is the largest Mosque in Morocco and 2nd largest mosque in Africa. I disagree with this verse just as much as I disagree with the other verses, (and with the doctrine of all religions), yet I have come to love the feeling of these brief breaks in the day, when one can pause to reflect on oneself as simply one small part of the cosmos. At least that is how I use them. ????
Below are the words of the Adhan, the calls to the salat, or the 5 prayer times each day. The call to prayer singers, or muezzin, with the most beautiful voices can become minor celebrities with people travelling just to hear their rendition. Devout Muslims stop what they are doing to go to a mosque or briefly pray by facing The Qibla, or The Direction (of Mecca). Before this they will have kept themselves clean or washed in specified ways. If outside a mosque, their prayers can be done on prayer mats, small rugs which represent the stunning rugs found inside mosques. I like this idea that any space, anywhere, is instantly able to become holy, simply through intention and presence.
--
The following is the Arabic transliteration and the English translation of what you hear :
Allahu Akbar
God is Great
(said four times)
Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah
I bear witness that there is no god except the One God.
(said two times)
Ashadu anna Muhammadan Rasool Allah
I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of God.
(said two times)
Hayya 'ala-s-Salah
Hurry to the prayer (Rise up for prayer)
(said two times)
Hayya 'ala-l-Falah
Hurry to success (Rise up for Salvation)
(said two times)
Allahu Akbar
God is Great
[said two times]
La ilaha illa Allah
There is no god except the One God
-
Here in Morocco though, just like in America, strict adherence is in sharp decline. Though I'm sure more go inside the mosques after the call, I rarely see men use a prayer rug. As in, I've seen maybe 3 men stop what they were doing and pray in the 10 weeks we've been here. All were prob over 50 years old. We saw it more in Turkey. However, just as with Christianity, most people here consider themselves Muslim even if they don't participate or follow the doctrine in any way, simply because it is the default religious identity in the area. (Drivers licenses in Turkey even state it as the automatic default, unless you actively go change it.)
(Apologies to any Muslim friends if I've gotten any of this wrong. Please free to correct or expand on it in the comments.)
