NZ Bomb Comp 2016 - Great Lake Taupo
Taupo was the host for the inaugural NZ Bomb Comp on 12 & 13 March 2016, the first event of its kind in New Zealand.
The brainchild of Taupo's Laity brothers, Matt and Jono, the NZ Bomb Comp is a mix of madness and genius, with a 10-metre-tall scaffold built on a steep drop-off at the shores of Wharewaka Point, Lake Taupo.
It gives brave jumpers the chance to show off their bombing skills on the lakefront to a cheering crowd. About 7000 bombs - of a non-lethal kind - were dropped on Lake Taupo. Bombs were embellished with double back flips or the addition of a ball, which flies into the air when the jumper hits the water's surface.
The NZ Bomb Comp organisers hope to use this year's event to iron out any kinks and make it a proper competition next time.

These clips are from my first couple of days at Taupo. I mostly relaxed and enjoyed wandering through town and by the lakeside. I also booked a cruise on the Ernest Kemp Replica Steamboat which drove us around the lake showing interesting spots like the Maori Rock Carvings at Mine Bay which you can see at @2:00 .
There are lots of green areas and spots by the lakeside where you can have a picnic and simply relax.
Later during my journey I came back once more to spend another week there.

K2K - Great Lake Trail, Taupo [Ep#43]
After a serene break at Kawakawa Bay, I hit the K2K section of Taupo's Great Lake Trail.
A 2.4km climb ends with a stunning view and then a long flowing downhill into Kinloch has the Spitfire's Halo hubs singing.
This is one trail I could ride again and again.

Waihora (Great Lake Trail) Mountain Bike Trail Guide Video, Great Lake Taupo, New Zealand
The Waihora portion of the Great Lake Trail continues north from the end of the Waihaha Trail. It is a 17km, testing grade 3, which is well drained. It should take 2-3 hours to complete for those with moderate fitness levels.
There are six moderately challenging climbs and descents along the trail, each with rewarding views across the lake. Take a break at one of these lookouts for a well-earned photo opportunity and a drink.
You’ll ride through Kamahi trees and past volcanic rock formations (typical of the western bays). Look out for ‘Echo Rock’ as you weave through rich bush and across some picturesque bridges and boardwalks on the final descent down towards Kotukutuku Stream. The track ends on the lake edge at Waihora Bay.
Getting There :
The trail can be accessed by car at the end of Waihaha Rd, about 45km south west of Taupo along state highway 32.
If you don’t wish to make the return ride back to your car, you can park your car at Kinloch and book a shuttle to drop you of at the start of the trail and a water taxi to pick you up in Waihora Bay and return you to Kinloch.
The boat ride back to Kinloch from the trail end is the perfect way to finish the ride, offering some spectacular views of the lake on the return journey.

First thing we check out the legendary views and waterfall at Huka Falls. The colour of the waters here at Huka Falls are an extraordinary icy blue. From the Huka Falls vantage points you can witness the phenomenon of natural hydro power barreling over an 11meter high waterfall.
Next up Peter makes an attempt at conquering his fears at Taupo Bungy. Bungy jumping is something that he chickened out of last time he was in Taupo so watch on to see if he actually does it.

We've heard about the beautiful Wairakei Terraces and thermal health spa in Taupo a couple times before but on this visit to Taupo we finally make the trip over the the healing thermal natural waters to have a soak. We're so glad we did. The thermal spa waters have a rejuvenating effect on your skin which you feel just by soaking in it for awhile.

If you're looking for a tasty big feed then make sure you check out the famous Master of India restaurant. This has got to be hands down the best Indian restaurant in Taupo. Waihaha (Great Lake Trail) Mountain Bike Trail Guide Video, Great Lake Taupo, New Zealand
The Waihaha Trail is set deep in the bush of Taupo’s western bays. It features rich native bush, towering volcanic rock cliffs and a waterfall hidden deep in the Waihaha Valley.
It is a well-drained, grade 3 trail that is 11km long. The trail is a mix of uphill climbs and downhill cruises, with some flat sections. Riders with moderate levels of fitness can expect to complete the ride in 2-3 hours.
Getting There :
From Taupo, drive 54kms to the Waihaha River Bridge on Western Bay Road. The track starts from the car park at the southern end of the bridge.
The trail follows the river for a few hundred metres before it crosses the river on a swing bridge. It then gently climbs up the cliffs, following the course of the river to a lookout with views of the Waihaha Valley and waterfall, as well as panoramic views of Lake Taupo to the north and east.
You’ll continue along to the trail end where you will be picked up by your pre-arranged shuttle service, or make the return ride back to your car.
Those with good fitness levels can continue on to the Waihora Trail, a further 17km to the lake edge of Waihora Bay. Here a pre-booked water taxi can ferry you to Kawakawa Bay or Kinloch.

Lions Walk aka The Great Lake Walkway Mountain Bike Trail Guide Video, Great Lake Taupo, New Zealand
The Lions Walk, also referred to as the Great Lake Walkway, is a shared walk and cycle track that was created on the lake reserve by the Taupo Lions Club.
The trail is an easy 10km long, grade 1 ride. It is suitable for riders of every skill level, from absolute beginners to experts wanting a relaxed, scenic cruise. This is riding at its most basic level and is an ideal opportunity for a family to experience Lake Taupo together.
Getting There :
The trail begins at the Taupo Boat Harbour, where Redoubt Street meets Ferry Rd (but there are plenty of parking options along the length of the ride, meaning you can start and finish the trail at any point you choose).
From the Harbour it heads along the lakefront, along which you can see stunning views across the lake toward Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe. The track passes a number of popular hotels and motels, as well as hot water spots where you can stop and dip your toes in the hot sand.
The paved walkway continues on past the Three Mile Bay boat ramp, taking in more secluded bays with boats moored and some lovely holiday homes. There are a number of picnic and rest areas on the lakefront where you can stop and take in the views or have a swim.
Kowhai trees have been planted along the way to provide shelter for local wildlife. Ducks and swans can usually be seen as you pass by.
This beautiful ride along the lakefront is restful and relaxing. With stunning scenery and lapping lake water on the pumice beaches, this is a therapeutic and healthy ride for any age group.
The Tongariro River Trail is a relaxing ride, along one of the North Island’s most popular rivers.
It is perfectly suited for families and casual riders seeking to explore the native bush and clear waters of the river, without having to ride a long distance.
The track is a grade 2 trail on mostly flat terrain, making it suitable for children and beginner riders to enjoy.
It’s a 15km loop track of undulating, yet comfortable ground, which will take a family a couple of hours to complete (or close to an hour for more experienced riders).
Getting There :
The trail begins at the car park next to the Tongariro River Bridge on State Highway 1 in Turangi, where you can park your car. Alternatively you can take a shuttle service from Taupo or Turangi to the trail head.
There are alternative starting points along the trail where you can park your car at the scenic reserves and begin your ride from there. This means shorter routes can be tailored to suit your particular needs. Contact the Turangi i-SITE or one of the shuttle services who will help you customize the best drop off and pick up point for you.
The trail has a variety of scenic locations to stop off at for a picnic lunch, or even a quick dip in the river to cool off during the hot summer months.
The Tongariro National Trout Centre is also on route, where you can get up close to the beautiful trout which inhabit the Tongariro River, or view the endangered native Whio (Blue Duck) at the newly purpose-built hardening facillity.
The trail can be ridden in all weather conditions and mobile phone coverage is good throughout the ride.

Taupo is a town on the shore of Lake Taupo in the centre of the North Island of New Zealand. It is the seat of the Taupo District Council and lies in the southern Waikato Region. The name Taupo comes from Māori Taupō-nui-a-Tia. Literally translated, it means The great cloak of Tia where Tia is the name of the discoverer of the lake.
Taupo has a population of 30,000. Taupo was officially constituted as a borough, but from 1989 it has been administered by the Taupo District Council, the district including both Taupo itself and the surrounding hinterland. Despite this, it is occasionally referred to as a city.
Taupo is a tourist centre, particularly in the summer, as it offers panoramic views over the lake and to the volcanic mountains of Tongariro National Park to the south. It offers a number of tourist activities including sky diving, jet boating and paragliding.
Mount Tongariro is a volcanic complex in the North Island of New Zealand. It is located 20 kilometres to the southwest of Lake Taupo, and is the northernmost of the three active volcanoes that dominate the landscape of the central North Island.
The volcanic massif, often simply referred to as Tongariro, has a height of 1,978 metres (6,490 ft). It first erupted about 260,000 years ago. The volcano consists of at least 12 cones; Ngauruhoe, while often regarded as a separate mountain, is geologically a vent of Tongariro. It is also the most active, having erupted more than 70 times since 1839, although the last eruption took place in 1974-1975. Activity has also been recorded at other vents. Red Crater last erupted ash in 1926 and contains active fumaroles. There are many explosion craters on the massif; water has filled some of these to form the Blue Lake and the Emerald Lakes.
The popular hiking route called Tongariro Alpine Crossing passes between Tongariro and Ngauruhoe.
Mount Tongariro and its surroundings are also one of the several locations which Peter Jackson chose to shoot the The Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
And Taupo has a museum with some Maori artefacts and other local things.
