Historic cities in Yemen added to UNESCO danger list

UNESCO has added two cities in Yemen to the List of World Heritage in Danger.
Years of war have taken its toll on the country's citizens and historic Islamic landmarks.
STORY-LINE :
The Old Walled City of Shibam is known as 'the Manhattan of the desert' due to its tower-like structures built in the 16th-century.
One of the oldest and iconic examples of urban planning, it was placed on the World Heritage List in 1982.
Like most of Yemen, years of armed conflict have taken its toll on the city.
Last week, UNESCO's World Heritage Committee added the ancient Yemeni cities of Shibam and Sana'a to the List of World Heritage in Danger.
Like Shibam, old Sana'a is an Islamic city of great historical importance.
In the 7th and 8th centuries the city became a major centre for Islam and has been inhabited for over 2,500 years.
It was placed on the World Heritage List in 1986.
The 12th century al-Mahdi Mosque and traditional red brick houses have been particularly affected.
Shibam has suffered from a series of attacks by insurgents and Sana'aa has experienced heavy airstrikes.
Ummat Al-Razaq, Deputy General Authority for the Preservation of Yemeni Historical Cities says:
Yemeni cities have undergone a great change in their architectural character, especially in the cities of Sanaa and Zabid. These changes have greatly hindered the preservation of these historic cities. This is why UNESCO has registered them both in the list of cities in danger (The World Heritage in Danger list) and is seeking support from the international community to save them.
1,975 houses were affected by the air strikes and 43 houses were totally destroyed. 86 houses have been seriously damaged in Sana'a city she adds.
The conflict is Yemen is yet to be resolved and violence continues in parts of the country.

Marib was the capital of the Sabaean kingdom. Tarim is a historic town in the Hadhramaut Valley of Yemen. The minaret of the Al Muhdhar Mosque is measured 53 metres high, and recognised to be one of the tallest earth structures in the world. Shibam owes its fame to its distinct architecture, which now is on UNESCOs programme to safeguard the human cultural heritage. The houses of Shibam are all made out of mud bricks, but still there are about 500 tower houses, rising 5 to 9 stories high. While Shibam has existed for around 2,000 years, most of the city's houses come mainly from the 16th century (wikipedia).

22 Ogos 2018 - hari ini Eid ul Adha hari ke dua di Yemen (11 Zulhijjah 1439H). Kami kongsikan sebahagian gambar kibas-kibas premium ibadah korban Yemen yang telah disembelih pagi tadi. Alhamdulillah daging korban daripada 47 ekor kibas ini telah pun diedarkan kepada fakir miskin Yemen di Sana'a dan sekitar. rujuk album gambar di

Untuk makluman tuan puan, daging dari seekor kibas yang dikorbankan dapat memberi manfaat kepada sekurang-kurangnya 15 keluarga. Setiap keluarga mendapat 1 kilogram daging.

The beautiful Yemen
The Yemenis consider themselves the original Arabs from whom all the other Arabs are descended. Indeed according to ancient scriptures,Quran and some suggestive statements in the Talmud there is evidence of this.
In ancient Yemen, named by the ancient Romans Arabia Felix ;Happy Arabia, there were 6 principal kingdoms: the Sabaean, Awsanian, Minaean, Qatabanian, Hadhramawtian, Himyarite. Sabaean was the oldest and one of the most powerful. Saba in Hebrew is Sheba. Thus the fabled Queen of Sheba came from Sabaean kingdom. Queens in Arabia were common, and both the Bible and Quran refer to the Queen of Sheba whose real name was Bilquis!
Sana'a, the capital, is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. Throughout in Yemen, Stone Age people left evidence of their occupation from 400,000BC (Discovered in Tahama on the Red sea of Yemen). Bronze Age people from 2000BC had developed many agricultural settlements throughout the area. Foremost of these was Marib where a huge dam was built to irrigate the terraced fields found here. The Marib Dam is considered the greatest technical structure of antiquity. You may see some of the ruins of this structure which collapsed around 600AD and which is nearby to a new dam serving the same purpose today.
Among Yemens natural and cultural attractions are four World Heritage sites:
1.The Old Walled City of Shibam in Wadi Hadhramaut, inscribed by UNESCO in 1982, is nicknamed Manhattan of the Desert, because of its skyscrapers. Surrounded by a fortified wall, the city is one of the oldest and examples of urban planning based on the principle of vertical construction.
2.The ancient city of Sana'a.
Even the name itself, Sana'a has a great history. It was previously known as the city of Shem, named after Shem the son of Noah,father of all semites, who was the first to order to build the city. It has also carried the name Azal after one of the sons of Yaqtin ibn Aa'z as mentioned in the Old Testament.
While the historical accuracy of such stories might be questioned, what is certain is that history in Yemen dates from the very dawn of humankind.
Sana'a an altitude of more than 7,000 feet has been inhabited for over two and a half millennia. Sanaa has 103 mosques, 14 hammams (traditional bath houses) and more than 6,000 houses that survive all date.
3.Close to the Red Sea Coast, the Historic Town of Zabid, was Yemens capital from the 13th to 15th Century. It played an important role for many centuries, because of its UNIVERSITY , which was a centre of learning for the whole Arab world. Arabic numbers were used there first on the peninsule and Algebra is said to have been invented there in the early 8th century by the little known scholar al-Jaladi.
4.The latest addition to Yemens list of World Heritage Sites is the Socotra Archipelago. Socotra or Eipheba Sakhotora which used to mean The island of Happiness.Mentioned by Marco Polo in the 13th Century, Socotra islands and two rocky islets near the Gulf of Aden has rich biodiversity. 37% of Socotras 825 plants, 90% of its reptiles and 95% of its snails are unique and DO NOT OCCUR anywhere else in the world. It is home to 192 bird species, 253 species of coral, 730 species of costal fish and 300 species of crab and lobster, as well as a range of Aloes and the Dragons Blood Tree (Dracaena cinnabari) or as it's known in Yemen: The tree of Cain and Abel (The name of this tree has always been linked with the name of Socotra due to its fame and importance since ancient times.The island people make cracks on the trees trunk and then a viscous red fluid flows and is left till it is dried up. After that they collect it and pack it for export.It is further used as medicine and many legends have been woven around it. According to one legend the tree grew from the blood of Abel when the first human crime occurred. As the blood flowed, the tree sprang from it. )
Yemen today is still not well known by the west so there could be more of these peculiarities on this beautiful mysterious country.

President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi has warned Yemenis against the use of force to express their political views, as he opened a national dialogue to pave the way for the drafting of a new constitution and the staging of elections.
Hadi's address to the hundreds-strong gathering at the presidential palace in Sanaa on Monday came even as activists reported that police had shot dead a protester in south Yemen who was demonstrating against the dialogue process.
Those who seek to impose their own approach by the force of arms are doomed to fail, Hadi said, referring to hardline southern factions who have rejected the talks and held strikes and protests against it.

A trip to Yemen in 1974 (HD)
In 1974 I visited Yemen for three weeks .
There was almost no tourism at that time, I met only two tourists from Europe.
I went by bus from Sana'a to Ibb, Jibla, Tai'zz, Zabid, Hodeidah and back to Sana'a. At last I visited Sa'da in the north of the country, in my opinion the most impressive town in Yemen.

Yemen: Minister accuses US of blocking war crimes probe
Yemeni Minister of Legal Affairs Abdulrahman Al-Mukhtar claimed that US aggression blocked the United Nations Security Council and International Criminal Court (ICC) from mounting a 'war crimes' investigation into the Dahyan bombing, at a press conference in Sana'a on Monday.
SOT, Abdulrahman Al-Mukhtar, Minister of Legal Affairs (Arabic): We affirm that the signs of the crimes of aggression and the misinterpretation of the assisting countries, led by the United States of America, are due to the failure of the aggression to break the will of the Yemeni people and the steadfastness of its army and its popular committees in all fields of confrontation. We, in the Republic of Yemen, recognise that it is impossible for the Security Council to adopt a resolution to refer war criminals to the International Criminal Court. We also recognise the difficulty of adopting a decision by the Council to form an international commission of inquiry, because of the American role in the aggression against our country.

ITALIAN-YEMENI CENTRE FOR THE CONSERVATION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE

The historical and cultural heritage of Sana'a is now in serious danger. The urgent need to protect this World Heritage Site recognized by UNESCO is not only limited to preserve the value of individual buildings. Today more than ever, there is a need to preserve the complexity and the vitality of a thousand-year-old city.
The creation of an independent body will allow: planning and implementing projects within a short time; ensuring the quality of the operations and their compliance; guaranteing financial transparency.
It is necessary to create an international competent and working team that is independent from other local authorities and institutions, while operating in synergy with them. Such a team should include specialized operators both for the planning and for the conservation and restoration systems of the buildings, beside skilled labor force that can carry out activities according to tradition.
The use of local staff and the respect of traditional building techniques will improve the economic situation by creating job roles, while the access to international funds, facilitated by this procedure, will allow them to intervene in short time even when the public or private funding would not be sufficient.
Many factors make the establishment of the Italian-Yemeni Centre for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage particularly significant. It can become one of the benchmarks in the whole region of Arabia.
The Venetian Institute for Cultural Heritage (IVBC) — frame of reference for the new center — is a non-profit institution accredited by the Veneto Region, which has been offering training courses for young restoration operators since 1996. Through school-yards in Venice, in Italy and abroad - particularly in the Holy Land -- the Institute has promoted a lot of restoration interventions.
In 2005, the Social Fund for Development — a Yemeni public law entity — invited IVBC to Sana'a for the restoration of the polychrome wooden ceilings of the Great Mosque (Al-Jami Al-Kabir). It is the oldest Islamic religious building covered by approximately 3,000 square meters of painted and carved coffered ceilings from various eras.
After several months of studies and tests in order to identify the correct methods, it was decided to provide, besides the restoration, the training of qualified local staff trough the selection of Yemeni students, chosen from architects, archaeologists and historians.
The recommended inclusion of female trainees was a sign of renewal and social openness, by empowering female equal opportunities.
A first course was launched in November 2006 with 40 students. Some of them were invited to Italy in 2013 to improve and enhance their skills in the structures of IVBC in Venice.
At the end of 2007 the Social Fund also called the IVBC to restore the Mosque and Madrasa of Al Ashrafyya in Taizz. Even in this case previously trained local workers were introduced, who were able to deepen their knowledge with in progress theoretical and practical courses.
The opening cerimony after the restoring in Ta'izz was celebrated yesterday 26 June 2014.
