Yemen is an Arab country in Western Asia at the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula. Yemen is the second-largest country in the peninsula, occupying 527,970 km2(203,850 sq mi). It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west, the Gulf of Adenand Arabian Sea to the south, and Oman to the east-northeast. Although Yemen's constitutionally stated capital is the city of Sana'a, the city has been under rebel control since February 2015. Because of this, Yemen's capital has been temporarily relocated to the port city of Aden, on the southern coast. Yemen's territory includes more than 200 islands; the largest of these is Socotra.
With its long sea border between eastern and western civilizations, Yemen has long existed at a crossroads of cultures with a strategic location in terms of trade on the west of the Arabian Peninsula.
Yemen was the home of the Sabaeans (biblical Sheba), a trading state that flourished for over a thousand years and also included parts of modern-day Ethiopia and Eritrea. In 275 AD, the region came under the rule of the later Jewish-influenced Himyarite Kingdom.[10] Christianity arrived in the fourth century, whereas Judaism and local paganism were already established. Islam spread quickly in the seventh century and Yemenite troops were crucial in the expansion of the early Islamic conquests.
Administration of Yemen has long been notoriously difficult. Several dynasties emerged from the ninth to 16th centuries, the Rasulid dynasty being the strongest and most prosperous.
The Zaydi Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen was established after World War I in North Yemen before the creation of the Yemen Arab Republic in 1962. South Yemen remained a British protectorate known as the Aden Protectorate until 1967 when it became an independent state and later, a Marxist state. The two Yemeni states united to form the modern republic of Yemen in 1990.

The university city of Zabid, Yemen
The neglected Unesco world heritage site in Tihama, by Rami Sajdi, along with music the music of Naseer Shamma
Zabid is away from the Red sea by 25km. Zabid in ancient times was settlements for some tribes, the most important of which is the Ash'er tribe. It began to rely on Grazing, then Agriculture. The town is circular in shape. The town was divided into 4 sections, each is inhabited by traders, scholars, dignitaries and artisans. Zabid today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The town has 29 mosques and 53 Koran schools. The town of Zabid is one of the most famous religious and scientific centers not only of Yemen, but also all over the Islamic world. The first educators of Al-Azhar University of Egypt came from Zabid. The schools OF Zabid taught the interpretations of all Islamic sects; Shafie', Maliki, Hanfi, Hanbli and Ismaeli Some of these schools, bearing their original names, still stand. Zabid was a university city unlike our modern campus sense of the word. Teaching took place in various mosques and colleges.

A trip to Yemen in 1974 (HD)
In 1974 I visited Yemen for three weeks .
There was almost no tourism at that time, I met only two tourists from Europe.
I went by bus from Sana'a to Ibb, Jibla, Tai'zz, Zabid, Hodeidah and back to Sana'a. At last I visited Sa'da in the north of the country, in my opinion the most impressive town in Yemen.
