The Great Siege of Malta
The last of our small country tour is Malta. I did a bunch of videos here, and this is sort of the foothold for them all.
It was so much fun, and such a beautiful island to film on. I had a great time here. Thanks so much to my sister for visiting to help keep up our sanity and convince me to rent nice places to stay.
Also, yes, I know it's a bhad opening joke. I'm aware. Terrible humour told dryly is what gets me up in the morning.

Saints And Heroes of The Knights of St John
The formidable hero of the Great Siege, Jean Parisot de Valette, is said to have been born on the 4th of February 1495. This video looks at some of the heroes which can be found in the Co-Cathedral of St John. Don Melchior de Robles, a knight of the Order of Santiago who captained the piccolo soccorso, died before seeing the end of this siege but his courage and prevalence led him to be eventually laid to rest in St John’s. Fra’ Vespiano Malaspina, who died on the last days of the siege, is depicted by Mattia Preti (1613-1699) in the vault and so is Fra’ Adriano la Riviera and Fra’ Melchior de Monsarrat.

Knights Of Malta - Part 1 of 2
This is a video about the history of the Knights of Saint John, Knights of Malta or Hospitallers and their decline.
Many people focus on the Knights Templar, but Hospitallers and the Teutonic Knights are just as important in the development of secret societies.
Fortifications of Malta ????????
Using Google earth Studio, having a look at some of the countless bastions, cavaliers, ditches, counterguards, curtains and batteries which make up the vast network of fortifications on the Mediterranean island of Malta.
1). Fort St. Angelo (Antiquity) was built by the Knights of St. John over a ruins of a castle dating back to Norman times. It lies at the tip of Birgu, one of the three cities.
2). Birgu Forifications (1530 -1560). When the Knights of St. John moved to Malta in 1530, they established themselves in Birgu. The first modifications were made to the Castrum Maris, which was soon to be re-named Fort St. Angelo and used as the Grand Master's residence. The entire town slowly began to be surrounded by large walls, in a similar style to the Order's earlier defences in Rhodes. Birgu's land front was completed by 1540.
3). Santa Margherita Lines (1638 – 1736). The foundation stones was laid on 30th December 1638. When the three central bastions were completed in 1645, construction work stopped due to lack of funds and the lines remained unfinished for many years. Construction resumed in 1715 and was completed by 1736.4). Cottonera Lines (1670 - 1723). A six kilometer long line of fortifications, including ten bastions and seven main gates, in the shape of a semi-circle commissioned by Grand Master Nicola Cotoner.
5). Valletta Fortifications (1566 - 1635) in 1566 the foundation stone of the city was laid by the actual Master of Saint John`s order Jean de Valette, whose surname gave the name to the capital of Malta.
6). Floriana Lines (1635 - 1669) It was realised in 1635 that Valletta’s fortifications alone were not strong enough to withstand a long siege. Therefore, construction of the Floriana Lines commenced to enclose Valletta’s land front.
7). Senglea Fortifications (1552 - 1565) The first fortification to be built was Fort Saint Michael in 1552, and the majority of the fortifications were built over the next decade when it was founded by Grand Master Claude de la Sengle.
8). Mdina (Antiquity) was built far away from the sea, on a high hill, so that from its bastions and towers, any enemy who would dare attack could be clearly visible. The city’s walls provided shelter to all of the island’s inhabitants during the frequent attacks from corsairs.
9). Fort Ricasoli (1670 - 1698) a bastioned fort in Kalkara. After it was decommissioned in the 1960s, the fort was used for industrial purposes. Today, the fort remains mostly intact but in a dilapidated state, and it is used as a filming location and a tank cleaning facility.
10). Fort St. Elmo (1552 -1565). Best known for its role in the Great Seige of Malta in 1565. The fort withstood the siege for 28 days, falling to the Ottoman Turks on 23 June 1565. None of the defending knights survived, and only nine of the Maltese defenders survived by swimming across to Fort St. Angelo on the other side of the Grand Harbour after Fort St Elmo fell. The long siege bought much needed time for the preparation of the other two fortresses.
11). Fort Tingné (1723 - 1798) was built to protect the entrance to Marsamxett Harbour, and it is one of the oldest polygonal forts in the world. The fort was extensively altered by the British in the 19th century, and it remained in use by the military until 1979.
12). Saint Thomas Tower (1614) a large bastioned watchtower in Marsaskala. It was the third of six Wignacourt towers placed on stategic points around the island.
13). Fort Manoel (1723 - 1798) located to the north west of Valletta, and commands Marsamxett Harbour and the anchorage of Sliema Creek. The fort is an example of Baroque architecture, and it was designed with both functionality and aesthetics in mind.
13). Citadel (Antiquity) in Gozo. A major reconstruction of the southern walls of the Citadel was undertaken between 1599 and 1622, transforming it into a gunpowder fortress. The northern walls were left intact, and today they still retain a largely medieval form. The new fortifications were criticised in later decades, and plans to demolish the entire citadel were made multiple times in the 17th and 18th centuries, but were never carried out.
14). St. Julians is a town in the central Region. It is situated along the coast, north of the country's capital, Valletta. It is known for tourism-oriented businesses, such as hotels, restaurants and nightclubs which are centred mainly in an area known as Paceville.

M2TW: Great Siege of Malta 1565, Turkish Assault on Senglea Walls 1/3
This map i chose has some river or sea across, its the closest one i can find near the sea :( On the 7th of August after another 5day round the clock bombardment, Lala Kara Mustafa Pasha attacked again both Senglea & Birgu walls simultaneously from land. Here i'm trying to show what happened in Sanglea that day when the Turks were on the point of victory Cavalry Knights sent out from Mdina attacked their camp & rear & saved the day. At the same time Birgu was being assaulted aswell but i'll recreate it in my next upload vid. Assaults like these on walls were continuous but The Knights of St.John, Mercenaries & the Maltese soldiers rather died than giving an inch of ground. Each Turkish assault would be tougher than the previous & still repulsed. Hail Malta :)
The Great Siege of Malta 1565 & GM. Jean Parisot De La Valette
† Ave Crux Alba †
† Hail, thou White Cross †
At 3:55 are GrandMaster Jean La Valette's REAL Breast & Back Plate (with engravings of St.John the Baptist & Valette's coat of arms) and part of his Burgonet Helmet.
A Tribute to the Heroic Defence of The Knights Hospitallers of St.John, the Grand Master Jean Parisot De La Valette, the brave Maltese people & all those who Valiantly Defended Malta during the Great Siege of 1565. Greatly Outnumbered by menpower & equipment, just 500 Knights of St.John, some 2,000 mixed Knights, Soldiers & Mercenaries from Spain, Italy, Sicily & Greece, 6,000 Maltese soldiers & men-at-arms, all numbering 8,500 defenders, made an unbeievably heroic defence during the Great siege of Malta 1565 & defeated an Muslim Ottoman invading force of 48,000 men, including 30,000 Ottomans & 18,000 Algerians, Tripolitans, Egyptians, other muslim volunteers from the east & outlaws pardoned by the sultan in exchange for service, all sent by Suleiman the Magnificent to wipe out once & for all the Order of st.John, which had harassed, captured & sunk many Ottoman & Corsair ships, & to take Malta for its ports as a stepping stone to invade Italy & furthur into Europe. Suleiman appointed Lala Kara Mustafa Pasha as Commander of the army while Piali Pasha was to Command the Imperial fleet, but it was also his wish that Turgut Reis, aka Dragut, should join them & they should do nothing untill he arrives with his fleet & his men, for he was well aquainted with Malta, having raided it at least 6 times & for his great experience as a great corsair on both land & sea. Later during the siege they were joined by Uluc Ali aka Ochiali Fartas 'the Calabrian', Cortucoli, Hassan (son of Hayreddin Barbarossa) viceroy of Algiers & Candelissa Reis, each with their men & ships from Algiers, Tripoli & other men from the levant. The Brilliant 71 year old Grand Master La Valette had been fighting muslims all his life, even his family has, so he was undoubtedly experienced, he knew what he was doing & knew his enemy well enough. The siege lasted nearly 4 months & with no quarter given or accepted on both sides, excpet for renegades with information, the fighting was ferocious & bloody. Full scale assaults were repulsed one after the other. Each time the Turks threw themselvs against the crumbling bastion walls with evrything they had, each time they were driven back with horrible casualties. Bombardments by the Turks went round the clock & they fired some 150,000 cannonballs, which at one point, it was heard from a 100 miles away in Sicily. The 'Piccolo Soccorso' 1st small relief force, no doubt although few, they were very crucial & were greatly welcomed. It consisted of 700 Knights & Soldiers from the Order of st.John, from Spain, from Italy & few from the Spanish holy Order of Santiago, all commanded Don Juan de Cardona & by the Marshall of the Order of Santiago Melchior de Robles, whom both were dedicated, brave & curagous leaders especially Marshall Robles, sadly he was killed later on during the siege after repulsing many Turkish assaults, his loss was deeply felt by the whole island. Finally, With God's help, with the brilliant thinking & self courage of La Valette, with extreme bravery from the Knights of st.John, the Spanish & Italian Knights & men-at-arms, the Maltese people & with the long awaited 2nd relief force of 4,000 Spanish & the other members of the order of st.John, the Turks were defeated, broken & not much fight was left in them, after all their best efforts failed due to swift stubborn respons & great bravery in fighting, the Turks took whatever was left & started retreating. The newly arrived reinforcements of Don Garcia althaugh it was almost too late, they still played a part, they waited for them on Naxxar highgrounds & charged the Turks without orders, they were led by Ascanio de la Corna, the knights of Mdina did the same, charged & flanked the retreating Turks while they fighting their way through la Corna's men, then they chased them all the way to the sea to board their ships, cutting down as many as they can. During the siege, Dragut Reis, the Aga (General) of the Janissaries, the Master General of Turkish Ordinance Soli Aga, Candelissa Reis, Cortucoli, Sanjak Bej Cheder & other high ranking officers were killed. Its estimated that the Turks lost between 28,000-35,000 men. Commanders of the Christian Knights, mercenaries & the Maltese men-at-arms were, GM. Jean De La Valette, Chevalier Mathurin Romegas, Colonel Mas †, Marshall of the Order of Santiago Melchior De Robles †, Chevalier Don Juan De Cardona, Chevalier De Lugny, the Governor of Mdina Chevalier Don Masquita & finally the viceroy of Sicily Don Garcia. On the Christian side many distinguished knights & Commanders were also killed, some 2,500 Europeans from different nationalities & 7,000 Maltese men, wemen & children were killed. By the end of the siege la Valette had no more than 600 men capable of bearing arms.
