Great Synagogue in Plzeň (Pilsen), Czechia-Interesting Buildings
The Great Synagogue in Plzeň (Pilsen), Czechia or Czech Republic is an interesting building that is said to be the second largest synagogue in Europe after the Dohany street synagogue in Budapest, Hungary.
It seems that the competing claims as to the largest synagogue buildings are many and it's near impossible to verify which synagogue is the largest, second largest and so on in Europe and especially in the world.
Whatever the real ranking as to size of this particular Great Synagogue in Plzeň may be, it is an imposing building that is interesting to see.
Enjoy.
Large Synagogue In Plzen Czech Republic
Back in the 1950's when I was walking near this synagogue I never saw anybody entering or leaving this building. I suppose in those days communism or socialism was to replace all religions.
Pilsen (Czech Republic) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Pilsen in the Czech Republic.
South of Brno, on the Austrian border, the Czech town of Mikulov occupies a strategic location on the former trade route between Vienna and Brno. The ruling Liechtensteiner were conscious of the economic contribution made by the town’s Jewish population and so for three centuries Mikulov became the centre of the Moravian Jews. The synagogue and around ninety buildings have been preserved and have become splendid cultural monuments. An imposing Renaissance castle rises picturesquely above the town and this once royal castle guarded the country's border. In 1249, Přemysl Ottokar The Third assigned both town and castle to the Styrian family, Liechtenstein, in gratitude for their support. In 1560, the Liechtensteiners sold everything to Hungarian aristocrats and in 1575 Emperor Maximilian The Second passed the town as a fiefdom to the Dietrichsteiner. In the eighteenth century, three fires caused extensive damage but, situated between its vineyards, the Late Gothic appearance of this rebuilt town has managed to survive to the present day.

A Look inside the Great Synagogue of Rome
There are more than 900 churches in Rome, and among them sits the Great Synagogue. Located in the Jewish quarter known as 'The Ghetto', the temple was built back in 1904. However, the Jewish community here dates back much further. .

Plzeñ, Czech Republic. Pilsen, Chech Republic. Плзень, Чехия
The best way to observe a whole Plzeñ is to look out from the highest point – the tower of St Bartholomew’s Cathedral ???? Its height is 102.6 metres, that makes it the tallest church tower in the Czech Republic. To get upstairs you must climb up the 301 steps ???? From the top you may see that Plzeñ was constructed by
modern principles of mediaeval urban planning. It has a checkerboard street plan and enormous central square. ????
We admired a tower of St John of Nepomuk Church in the south and the Great Synagogue to the southwest. If you look to the west you’ll see Plzeñ zoo and botanical garden. A famous Pilsner brewery is in the east of the city. ????
Pilsen, European Capital of Culture 2015: More Than Pilsner Beer
Plzeň, evropské hlavní město kultury 2015: Více než plzeňské pivo
Plzeň, or Pilsen, is the fourth biggest city of the Czech Republic, and 2015 it was a European Capital of Culture. Pilsen is worldwide known for its beer, the Pilsner beer, created by Josef Groll in 1842. But the city has much more to offer than a visit at the Pilsner Urquell Brewery.
(cf. )
On the huge main square, the náměstí Republiky, is the St Bartholomew's Cathedral (Katedrála svatého Bartoloměje), a Gothic style temple from the late 13th century with the tallest church tower (102.6 m) in the Chech Republic. There is access to the tower platform that offers an excellent view to the square and the city.
On the North side of the main square is the Renaissance town hall (Renesanční plzeňská radnice) with a lot of sgraffitos on its façade; on the South side is the marionette museum (Muzeum loutek), where a lot of puppets are shown on several floors, including the national hero Jan Žižka or Faust and Mephisto. There is also a puppet theatre in the city which has a long tradition of puppetry (Josef Skupa and Jiří Trnka were puppeteers here).
Another monument is the Moorish Revival style Great Synagogue (Velká synagoga), built in 1893, one of the few synagogues that remained intact after the destruction of all Jewish life during the Nazi occupation. Today it is mainly used as a concert hall and photographic exhibition hall.
Last but not least there is a brewery museum (Pivovarské muzeum) that shows a lot of ancient machines and tools for brewing. From there visitors also have an access to a part of the historic underground tunnel and cellar network below the old town, one of the longest systems of this kind in Central Europe.
Pilsen, Europäische Kulturhauptstadt 2015: Mehr als Pilsner
Pilsen, tschech.

Plzen, Czech Republic, 7th July 2012
This town in western Bohemia is not far from the German border and so is very much, geographically, as well as culturally, in central Europe rather than 'Eastern' Europe. The architectural styles are a distinct blend, very colourful as well as pictorial and human-scale. The Automobile Association's routefinder puts it on the map between Budapest and the Channel ports due to the new motorway network which helps you to bypass Prague (if you want to). We timed it as 5 hours from Budapest and 10 hours from Dunkerque.
