Greek Street Food in Athens, Greece: Gyros vs Souvlaki Travel Video Transcript:
So the sun is starting to set and dinner time is quickly approaching. We've been walking around the Athens flea market and we've worked up an appetite so right now we are stopping for some Greek food. We've found a little joint that is serving up Pita Souvlaki and Pita Gyro. So we've ordered up one of each. Ta da! Doesn't that look good? So yeah, ready for another taste test in Greece.
What do we call this in Greece vs back at home? Alright, so here's the deal. Over here it is called Gyros but where I grew up in Canada and also visiting in the US it was called gyro. So it is kind of hard for me to say it as gyros but I'm starting to get used to it. So when you're in Greece call it the gyros.
So what is fascinating is that gyros means to turn. It is basically rotisserie meat that is cooked on a skewer and you can have all kinds of different things. There is chicken, pork, lamb. So pick whatever you want and it is stuffed inside of a pita.
So enough of me rambling on. Let's actually try it here. Mmmm.
That's one of my favorite sandwiches I've had in a while. It's so good. The meat is really tender. I really like the sauce. Tzatziki. Yeah, the tzatziki sauce and you've also got a lot of onions and tomatoes too, so really good stuff.
So for mine I got the pita souvlaki. And souvlaki is basically meat on a skewer so it is not shaved meat like Sam's. So I've got nice chunks in there. And also it comes with French fries, onions and tomatoes. And we can't forget the tzatziki sauce which is made with yogurt, garlic and cucumber. Delicious! So I'm going to have another bite here. We've got a quality control bite right now.
Mmmmm.
So so good guys.
So you polished that off quickly. Yeah, I devoured that. Seriously, that was really fast. In terms of price this is basically the cheapest and most affordable meal that you can get in Greece. And it is so delicious. Where we picked it up here, which is a super touristy area, it was 2 Euros each. The giant ones were 3.50 and if you're walking down say more of a residential area, somewhere that is not in a touristy zone, you can pick one up in the one to two Euros range.
This is part of our Travel in Greece series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Greek culture, Greek arts, Greek foods, Greek religion, Greek cuisine and Greek people.

Greek Street Food Tour in Athens, Greece Travel Video Transcript:
Today's plan is to sample all the Greek Street Food. We have come to Athens Flea Market and I know this seems like a bit of a strange place to be having street food but they have a lot of little stands and shops where you can get souvlaki, gyros, baklava. We're just planning to walk down the main road of the flea market and just peruse have a look around and see what we can sniff out and have a fantastic meal on the street. And if you're interested in recreating this little food tour that we're about to embark on the closest metro station is Monastiraki so there you go. Let's go eat.
Now it is time for food. We ordered the Gyro and Souvlaki. Both of them in pitas. The meat is so juicy. Is it? Juicy and tender and it is like soaking the bread with its meaty juiciness. And then all of the freshness of the vegetables right? And the price was also wonderful. They were 2 Euros each.
We have moved on to a little something sweet now. It didn't take us long let me tell you. Well we got Greek Yogurt. And this is not just any Greek yogurt. This is this comes with some amazing toppings. Yes. It has got a super saturated amount of honey. It has walnuts and we also ordered dates as well.
We found a man who was selling nuts. Yes. And he was very friendly and animated. He was so friendly and passionate and also very generous allowing us to sample them.He let us try the nuts before we bought them. What a nice guy. We ended up getting a sweet one and a salty one. And then because we bought two packs he gave me a whole bunch extra in my hand. He was just like open your palm and he put a whole bunch of nuts.
Exciting moment over here. Trying my first Greek coffee. I somehow didn't manage to try Greek coffee the first time I was in Greece. I don't think I was drinking a lot of coffee a few years ago. No.
That is the only thing I can think of. We've found a cute little cafe here in the heart of the flea market so we thought let's sit down for a quick drink.
That is potent. Yeah, strong coffee? Potent, rich, strong.
Baklava. Better believe it. We've been having a lot of this here in Athens. Look at all of that syrup just oozing out. That honey.
Last but not least. We found some bread. It is reminiscent of a pretzel I would say. Apparently this is called Koulouri.
The lady said this was the most traditional of the ones that she was serving. It is a ring shaped piece of bread covered in toasted sesame seeds.
That concludes our Greek Street Food Tour here in Athens, Greece. We ate so many delicious street food items. And we'd love to know what are some other Greek street food items that you can try. We obviously didn't try them all just a very small component of them. Everything was really good and that was just a lot of fun. Ciao from Athens, Greece.

How to Eat in Athens // TRADITIONAL Greek Food Tour! (and wine)
This is the day we were maybe most excited for because, well we love to eat. And we also found out that we DEFINITELY love to eat in Athens! When trip planning, we knew we couldn't leave without a traditional greek food tour. Often we'll put together our own food tour, but for our trip to Athens we decided to do a food tour through a tour group called Greeking.Me. They offer lots of different tour options (some food, some not) and this was their Athens by night food tour & wine tasting. Oh, did we forget to mention the wine. The tour gave you enough food for a full dinner (and them some) PLUS wine. Pretty cool deal if you ask us. You can check out some of the things we ate in the video, but what we loved is that they offer traditional dishes, but not things you would necessarily pick out for yourself.
And after we let the food settle, we decided we needed to end the night with one of Athens best desserts - Loukoumades. They are essentially like little donuts covered in honey and sugar and were amazing!
Let us know in the comments if we missed any traditional foods that we should try next time we're in Greece. We LOVED our time here and plan to make a return trip.
Special shout out and thanks to everyone following our journey! We love traveling and it means a lot to us to have so much amazing support!

Greek Food - STREET FOOD TOUR and Amazing Souvlaki in Athens, Greece!
Thank you to Tassos for taking me on this incredible Greek food tour of Athens!

Athens is a city that I’ve wanted to visit ever since learning so much about it during one of my Western Civilizations classes in High School. Finally, I had a chance to visit, not only for the amazing history, but mainly for the amazing Greek food!
In this video, I’m taking you on a one day, all out Greek food tour of Athens along with Tassos. We ate a combination of classic Greek street food snacks, and a few restaurants, including for dinner some of the best lamb chops I’ve ever had.
Here are all the restaurants and places included in this Greek food tour of Athens:
Dexameni Cafe - Our first stop was to drink Greek coffee in this small public square. A great environment, and the coffee was excellent.
Price - 1.80 EUR per cup
Kostarelos Deli - Tassos knows his Greek cheese and he says Kostarelos Deli has some of the best cheese in Athens.
Total price - 14.60 EUR
Mam - Mam is often considered the best Greek cheese pie in Athens, and it’s a perfect street food kind of place. Most people take-away, but they have a standing table as well. The classic Greek cheese pie was my favorite.
Total price - 4.80 EUR
Varvakios Market - This is the Athens central market for meat and seafood. It’s a beautiful market and any lover would enjoy walking around this amazing market.
Miran - Pastourma and Soutzouki - This is a really cool little deli in Athens where you can buy for takeaway or order whatever you see and sit at one of the tables to snack. They are known for their camel pastirma, and it was the best thing we tried - absolutely excellent.
Total price - 4.62 EUR
Bougatsopoleio Thessaloniki - Bougatsa is a famous Greek food pastry. We tried a couple versions, but the best for me was the minced meat filled bougatsa.
Total price - 15.50 EUR
Kostas Soulvaki - Souvlaki, also known as kalamaki is perhaps the best known of all Greek street food or Greek fast food, and Kostas is considered to be one of the best places to eat it in Athens. They grill pork, stuff it into Greek pita, top it with tomatoes, onions, and tomato sauce, and wrap it into a handheld treat. Amazing.
Price - 2.20 EUR per piece
Taverna To Trigono - For dinner, Tassos wanted to take us to one of his favorite restaurants in Athens, a little outside of the city in a place called Kalyvia Thorikou. This is a countryside meat paradise, and they served us some of the best lamb chops I’ve ever had in my life. An amazing meal to end an incredible day of Greek food in Athens.
Lamb chops
Total price for everything - 99 EUR
Thank you for watching this Greek food tour of Athens!

Greece Travel Part 2: Greek Food in Athens
One of the best Greek food experiences in Athens!!!
GREEK FOOD tour in ATHENS | SECRET MEZE restaurant | Greek street food in ATHENS, GREECE
We're in Athens, Greece! In this 4 part series we're exploring Greece's capital city to hunt down the best local Greek food. In this video we hunt down some Greek street food, sample popular local dishes and share a secret mezze restaurant with you, our favourite in Athens.
We start off with a breakfast pastry called bougatsa made of phyllo and semolina custard, washed down with the local drink of Freddo Espresso- espresso blended in a milkshake maker and served over ice. We then taste a kourou tiropita, a Greek feta pie from a local bakery which locals say do amazing pies. We then visit a family run peinirli shop and eat two mouthwatering peinirli- a boat shaped dough baked with a cheesy, buttery filling. We can totally see why these are so popular!
We end with a full mezze spread at Avli- a local taverna hidden behind a narrow door- it's a blink and you'll miss it kind of a place! From grilled loukaniko (sausage) to keftedakia (meatballs) we share some Greek mezze plates with you. We hope you enjoyed this Greek food video from Athens! #greekstreetfood #athensstreetfood #streetfood

Athens Greece
Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece. Athens dominates the Attica region and is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning over 3,400 years and its earliest human presence starting somewhere between the 11th and 7th millennium BC.
Classical Athens was a powerful city-state that emerged in conjunction with the seagoing development of the port of Piraeus, which had been a distinct city prior to its 5th-century BC incorporation with Athens. A center for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum,it is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy, largely because of its cultural and political impact on the European continent, and in particular the Romans. In modern times, Athens is a large cosmopolitan metropolis and central to economic, financial, industrial, maritime, political and cultural life in Greece.
Athens is a global city and one of the biggest economic centres in southeastern Europe. It has a large financial sector, and its port Piraeus is both the largest passenger port in Europe, and the second largest in the world. while at the same time being the sixth busiest passenger port in Europe. The Municipality of Athens (also City of Athens) had a population of 664,046 (in 2011) within its administrative limits, and a land area of 38.96 km2 (15.04 sq mi). The urban area of Athens (Greater Athens and Greater Piraeus) extends beyond its administrative municipal city limits, with a population of 3,090,508 (in 2011)over an area of 412 km2 (159 sq mi). According to Eurostat in 2011, the functional urban area (FUA) of Athens was the 9th most populous FUA in the European Union (the 6th most populous capital city of the EU), with a population of 3.8 million people. Athens is also the southernmost capital on the European mainland.
The heritage of the classical era is still evident in the city, represented by ancient monuments and works of art, the most famous of all being the Parthenon, considered a key landmark of early Western civilization. The city also retains Roman and Byzantine monuments, as well as a smaller number of Ottoman monuments. Athens is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery. Landmarks of the modern era, dating back to the establishment of Athens as the capital of the independent Greek state in 1834, include the Hellenic Parliament and the so-called architectural trilogy of Athens, consisting of the National Library of Greece, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Academy of Athens. Athens is also home to several museums and cultural institutions, such as the National Archeological Museum, featuring the world's largest collection of ancient Greek antiquities, the Acropolis Museum, the Museum of Cycladic Art, the Benaki Museum and the Byzantine and Christian Museum. Athens was the host city of the first modern-day Olympic Games in 1896, and 108 years later it welcomed home the 2004 Summer Olympics, making it one of only a handful of cities to have hosted the Olympics more than once.
