Nicaragua - hiking in El Chocoyero El Brujo canyon

26 miles from Granada, 17 miles from Managua near Ticuantepe is the El Chocoyero nature reserve - El Brujo. This Y-shaped canyon is bounded at its ends by steep cliffs and 2 waterfalls. The 1-3 hours circular trails are easily accessible even for less sporty visitors. You may even camp there. Despite its proximity to the capital, the last 7 km long, unpaved access road makes this a remote peaceful place in the wilderness. The dense jungle is home to a breathtaking variety of animal species . Outstanding is a rare species of small, green parrots, which breed here in their hundreds on a rock face. Howler Monkeys and Capuchin Monkeys are also easy to observe. The reserve is owned and managed by the cooperative Juan Ramón Rodriguez Perez.
