Cruising the Peñol - Guatapé reservoir, Colombia
62 kilometres east of Medellin travellers find a reflecting pool where they can fish and ride jet skis and boats. It is the Peñol - Guatapé reservoir, a dam built in the late 1970s in which 6,365 hectares which was flooded, covering the town of Peñol. The dam can store water between May and November for use in the summer.

What to do in Guatape Colombia - Visiting the OLD PEÑOL House-Museum!
Taking a tour to the OLD PEÑOL House-Museum is one of the many activities you can do when visiting Guatape, besides the Piedra del Penol which is, of course, a must-go and the most known touristic attraction of this area, you can also cruise the Guatape Reservoir and visit this Museum to learn about the history and how an entire town was flooded to build this hydroelectric dam, during the tour you also make a stop in Pablo Escobar abandoned Mansion which is also a very interesting experience!

La Piedra Del Peñol (Spanish for The Rock of Guatape),is a monolithic formation located at the town and municipality of Guatape, (86 km northeast of Medellin) in Colombia.
The stone rises from the bottom of the hydroelectric dam of Peñol-Guatapé. This monolith was spotted as a border landmark between country farms and the two cities.

Esta vez nuestra experiencia fue en un #glamping una forma diferente de acampar que incluye un alojamiento con todo el confort que ofrece algo más que solo dormir, convirtiéndose asi, en una experiencia completa. El poder contemplar el amanecer , el disfrutar el estar en medio de la naturaleza, escuchar sus sonidos y lo mejor de todo una vista increíble y en todo el frente la represa de #guatape.
A nosotros nos encantó y lo mejor de todo, fueron los diferentes planes realizamos durante nuestra estadia, en la mañana fuimos a una caminata ecológica, luego montamos en kayak, en la tarde jacuzzi y para rematar una buena fogata, pero esto no termino ahi nos tenian preparada una gran sorpresa para nuestro aniverdario, las pistas del amor wuauu algo realmente muy especial, asi que fuimos unos lunáticos muy felices... @levitglamping

My visit to the rock at El Penol and Guatape. It includes a boat trip on the reservoir the covers the old town of El Penol, the visit to the rock, including flying my drone and a visit to the town of Guatape.
GUATAPE TOWN - ANTIOQUIA, COLOMBIA
Guatapé is a town and municipality in Antioquia Department, Colombia.[1] Part of the subregion of Eastern Antioquia. Guatapé is located in the outskirts of Medellín, bordering a reservoir created by the Colombian government for a hydro-electric dam, built in the late 1960s. This quaint town is the gathering place for Las Vegas, or the small farms of the area. It is also a growing area of recreation for citizens of Medellín, and aims to be a tourist destination for foreign travellers.
Guatapé was founded in 1811, by the Spaniard Don Francisco Giraldo y Jimenez. The name Guatapé, comes from the Quechua language, related to stones and water. The area was visited by the conquistadors circa 1551.[2].
On the late 20th century, Guatapé became one of the most important electric production centers in the country.
New resorts, several restaurants, and rental homes along the lake are available for visitors. Each building has tiles along the facade's lower walls in bright colors and dimensioned images. Many of the tiles are tied to the products sold by the shops, or the beliefs of the residents. Others are cultural images of the farming heritage of the community.

Climbing Guatape Monolith The Rock in Guatape, Colombia
The Tahamies Indians, former inhabitants of this region, worshiped the rock and called it in their language mojarrá or mujará (meaning rock or stone).
A viewing spot was built on top of the rock, where it is possible to acquire handicrafts, postcards, and other local goods. It is possible to see the 500 km shore-perimeter dam. There are 740 steps to the uppermost step atop the building at the summit, a fact reinforced by yellow numbers also seen in the climb up the stairs.
In the 1940s, the Colombian government declared it a National Monument.
