Guatapé is a town in Antioquia Department, Colombia. it part of the subregion of Eastern Antioquia. Source: Wiki. Gautape is considered a Tourist town filled hotels and hostels and restaurants tailored for the traveling public.
One of Guatape main source of economy stems from tourism, particularly tourism that is interested in the rock or in Spanish La Piedra. Because of Guatape close proximity to La Piedra, tourists are more inclined to visit there instead of neighboring town,.
As a matter of this fact another town El Penol has put a claim on the rock as its own. Because the town originally was close proximity to the Rock La Piedra but then flooded and moved to another location to facilitate Antioquia energy program EPM.
Furthermore each town has a name for the Rock. In Guatape its referred to the Rock of Guatapé or El Peñón de Guatapé or in Penol its called La Piedra de El Peñol. If your in Medellin this is a great tour to go on .

El Peñol is a giant rock known as 'la piedra más grande de Colombia' (the biggest stone in Colombia). It weighs 66 million tonnes and contains granite and quartz. The first documented climb was in 1954 when three men took five days to reach the top. Nowadays, it takes 740 steps to reach the very top of the man-made tower at the summit. We found that the weather in this part of Colombia changes every twenty minutes or so - we saw both the sun and rain during our climb. The clouds lifted enough at the top for us to enjoy the gorgeous view of the surrounding lakes and landscape. You'll notice what looks like a 'GI' written on the northern face of the rock. The monolith is situated between two towns, Guatapé and El Peñol, and each has fought over ownership over the years. One day the people of Guatapé decided to settle it once and for all by writing 'Guatapé' in huge letters. By the time they had finished the 'G' and the first vertical line of the 'U' the people of El Peñol had taken notice and assembled to stop it. All that remains is an unfinished name and a part of local history that hasn't washed away.

Guatape Day Trip & climbing El Peñol from Medellin Colombia
This was my Guatape day trip & El Peñol 2 hours from Medellin, starting with the Metro to the bus station. El Penol Colombia is a mountain about an hour or so from Medellin that has stairs build along the side. If you're looking for day trips from Medellin, this is a must. This is what I'll be walking. Then a sketchy bus ride through the mountains nearly missing dozens of people. Getting to Guatape was a fun but, again, sketchy ride.
This whole country is a series of close calls. I'm surprised that I don't see more accidents. But the trip was fine; just the stairs were something else. If I had known how difficult it would be, I wouldn't have done it. And I don't recommend this to anyone over 30. The stairs are small in some points and uneven; extremely challenging. But I did it. Guatape was fine, but more so for couples. It could be considered romantic. By the way, the views from the top of El Peñol were incredible. So if you make it, it would have to be to say you did it and for the views. And you wouldn't think it, but alot of stores at the top.
When you get to Guatape, they'll be plenty of people there that can assist with what to do in Guatape. This trip, Guatape day trip is a must do when in Medellin. I've barely left the city, but this one I had to do. Plus I had a cousin asking me to wave his name while there. Shout out Terry.

Welcome to Colombia
In traveling Colombia, you cannot miss visiting Guatape, a town approximately two hours from Medellin that holds the title of being Colombia’s most colorful town. Located on the shores of a sprawling barrier lake. Guatape, Colombia is known for its traditional and vibrant illustrations that cover the buildings in unique images of animals, people, and shapes. Its borders are the towns of Alexandria, San Rafael, San Carlos, Granada and El Peñol.
To go to Guatapé the easiest way is by bus taken in Medellín. This town offers religious tourism, agritourism and ecotourism, as it has both historical and artistic Colombian patrimony, as well as ecological destinations. Some of them are churches as Nuestra Señora del Carmen or the monastery of Los Monjes Benedictinos, the Street of Remembrance (La Calle del Recuerdo), among others. In its ecological destination are the recreational park La Culebra, the Malecón and of course, La Piedra del Peñol, or the big stone. Be sure to check out the incredible view from the top of La Piedra del Peñol. Other things to do include water sports, such as jet skiing and water skiing, and fishing.

Tourist boat sinks on Peñol Resevoir and Guatapé Tour in Colombia,
A boat with about 150 tourists on board has sunk in north-western Colombia, officials say.
The vessel went down on the Penol reservoir in the tourist town of Guatape, about 45km (28 miles) east of Medellin.
It was not immediately clear whether there were any casualties, or where the tourists are from.
A rescue operation is under way. An air force helicopter has been sent to the area to assess the situation.
