Mobile, Baldwin Organizations Receive Tourism Grants from BP
MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WPMI) Companies in the area are still receiving funds from BP more than three years after the Deep Water Horizon disaster.Around $4.6 million in grants were awarded to the state of Alabama in the second round of grants from BP meant to promote tourism and seafood along the Gulf Coast. A majority of those state funds went to Mobile and Baldwin County organizations. One of the big winners was the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center in downtown Mobile. The center alone is receiving a grant of $500,000.There was a lot of hugging and happy dancing in the offices here. We were quite frankly over the moon about it, said Executive Director Gretchen Jaspering. The Bellingrath Gardens is receiving its second grant from BP.So we applied for a grant for $350,000 for marketing primarily and that marketing went over the year and will end in October of this year, said the Garden's Executive Director, Bill Barrick.Bellingrath Gardens will now receive an additional $75,000 in an additional grant. Barrick says the organization plans to use this new grant to also fund marketing for the Gardens. Barrick participated in a national advertisement produced by BP after the spill that he says helped the marketing of his company immediately following the disaster. BP Press Officer Jason Ryan says the company has no control over who receives the grants before declining to comment further regarding the grants.Alabama organizations receiving BP grants: Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail -- $270,375 Thunder on the Gulf -- $250,000 Bellingrath Gardens -- $75,000 City of Foley -- $182,500 Alabama Seafood and Marketing Board -- $500,000 Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center -- $500,000 University of Alabama -- $480,000 South Mobile County Tourism Commission -- $450,000 Mobile Bay CVB -- $500,000 Mobile Sports Authority -- $160,000 Monroeville Chamber of Commerce -- $85,000 Tuskegee Multicultural Center -- $198,500 Town of Dauphin Island -- $500,000 Bayou La Batre Chamber of Commerce -- $243,000 USS Alabama Marketing/Printing Materials -- $264,000
Airbus Flight School at the Exploreum
The Airbus Corporate Foundation today announced its continued partnership with Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center. In keeping with its goal to inspire disadvantaged children and young adults through aviation, the Airbus Corporate Foundation has awarded a second $50,000 grant to the Gulf Coast Exploreum, which will use the funds to expand its first year pilot youth mentoring and aeronautics program.
Dubbed ExploreAIR, the Exploreum's expanded program will focus on students, grade 6--12, and support the science center's ongoing Workforce Development initiatives and its role as the region's leading resource for informal STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education. With the Airbus Foundation grant, the Gulf Coast Exploreum, one of the top 25 science centers in the country, will add a new, permanent Wind Tunnel Flight Simulator exhibit as one of the foundational exhibit pieces of its aeronautics program. The Airbus Foundation's new grant will also underwrite expansion of the Flight Academy Summer Camp, and Principles of Flight Field Lessons and Teacher Workshops planned for the 2012-2013 academic year. Additionally, team members from the Airbus Americas Engineering Center, also located in Mobile, will work hands-on with local youngsters in the Exploreum's popular Weekend Engineering Flight Challenge, which targets children interested in the aeronautics and aerospace fields.
Youth development is one of three key missions supported worldwide by the Foundation, which aims to inspire children by providing access to aeronautics education. Airbus is proud to extend our partnership with the Gulf Coast Exploreum, said Barry Eccleston, President and CEO of Airbus Americas and a member of the Airbus Foundation Board. The Exploreum's initiatives use the exciting theme of aviation to inspire school children to pursue education in science, math, engineering and technology. It also lets our employees get involved in something worthy which directly benefits the future of aviation.
The Airbus Foundation's three-prong mission supports youth development, reducing humankind's impact on the environment and aiding communities that have been affected by natural disasters. It's a good fit for both organizations, and we are thrilled to be able to continue and expand the program. The community is very fortunate to have this level of commitment from Airbus to inquiry-based science learning and youth development, said Gretchen Jaspering, the Exploreum's Executive Director. Through this secondary $50,000 grant, the youth development initiative will continue and have a lasting impact along the Gulf Coast region.
