Gunjur Village.flv
Gunjur is a fishing village and situated in South Gambia. In the past there were no industries in the village but today local fish factories were being established and this has contributed tremendously to the improvement of the living standard of those occupied by the trade in fish.
From here you can buy fresh fish of various kinds, smoked fish and dry fish respectively. Some of the smoked fish is exported to neighboring countries and Europe.
Traditional Living Arrangements, Tanje Village Museum, GAMBIA
The traditional living compound in Tanje Village Museum presents the Gambian way of life 150 years ago and provides more insight into Gambian culture, family structures and hierarchies. Will it surprise you that many Gambians live in such compounds even today?

Villagelife and Tanje Village Museum - Gambia
We visited a local village, where families lived their life with animals and everyday work, and had a little peek how that life looks.
Tanje Village Museum was a unique place where the natural history and traditional culture of The Gambia is presented in an interesting and accessible way to tourists, Gambians, local inhabitants and school groups. It is also dedicated to a research into the uses of plants in medicine, textile dyes and in traditional beliefs.

Living Arrangements in Contemporary Gunjur, GAMBIA
Could you imagine living without running water, electricity, plumbing or refrigeration? I have taken my camera behind the compound walls to explore living arrangements in contemporary Gunjur, a small coastal village of about 17,000 people in the south-western part of Gambia near the Atlantic Ocean. Their compounds house extended families who manage through the needs of everyday life. As with many countries that are less advanced, in The Gambia the sense of time is lost. For those living in Gunjur every single day involves what we might consider mind numbing and backbreaking work like fetching water or hand washing clothes, etc. Almost all of the work within each compound is assigned to women; the men on the other hand men are out looking for work and based on what I've seen there is little work to be found. This is their culture and at times it might be difficult for us to reconcile the contradiction of living as a part of a community and surviving as community.

Gambian dancing at Ndemban - a Jola village in The Gambia
The Gambian women are playing simple percussion instruments, tapping out the rapid rhythm for the individual dancers to perform to. This happy event is simiilar to that which takes place at a traditional Gambian wedding. A bride-to-be from Bermuda is being entertained, along with her bridesmaids.

Brikama Craft Market, GAMBIA
Do you love exploring craft markets when abroad? The Brikama market which I have visited in October last year was established in 1975. There are 57 craft stalls though there are over 200 members who make and sell their artwork and other products in the nearby area. Despite the hard work of craft men, the business at the market is declining mainly due to the high cost of transportation for the larger souvenirs.

A typical compound in Africa, The Gambia
In Africa people live together on a compound. The whole family lives there together in separate houses. There is a big wall around it, to protect peope and property. This compound is in the Gambia, West-Africa.
