Could you imagine living without running water, electricity, plumbing or refrigeration? I have taken my camera behind the compound walls to explore living arrangements in contemporary Gunjur, a small coastal village of about 17,000 people in the south-western part of Gambia near the Atlantic Ocean. Their compounds house extended families who manage through the needs of everyday life. As with many countries that are less advanced, in The Gambia the sense of time is lost. For those living in Gunjur every single day involves what we might consider mind numbing and backbreaking work like fetching water or hand washing clothes, etc. Almost all of the work within each compound is assigned to women; the men on the other hand men are out looking for work and based on what I've seen there is little work to be found. This is their culture and at times it might be difficult for us to reconcile the contradiction of living as a part of a community and surviving as community.
