North America’s Hidden Treasure | Black Canyon
Do you have a favorite place on Earth? I think I found mine.
———————————————————————————————
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in western Colorado is one of hidden treasures of the North America. This canyon is called Black because some parts of the gorge only receive 33 minutes of sunlight a day. The canyon is incredibly steep, it’s more than 2000 feet tall and it is probably one of the deepest and narrowest canyons I have ever seen in my life.

Hiking at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
Big enough to be overwhelming, still intimate enough to feel the pulse of time, Black Canyon of the Gunnison exposes you to some of the steepest cliffs, oldest rock, and craggiest spires in North America. With two million years to work, the Gunnison River, along with the forces of weathering, has sculpted this vertical wilderness of rock, water, and sky.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Colorado, United States
Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Colorado, USA 2005
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is a United States National Park located in western Colorado and managed by the National Park Service. There are 3 entrances to the park. The south rim entrance is located 15 miles (24 km) east of Montrose, while the north rim entrance is 11 miles (18 km) south of Crawford and is closed in the winter. The park contains 12 miles (19 km) of the 48-mile (77 km) long canyon of the Gunnison River. The national park itself contains the deepest and most dramatic section of the canyon, but the canyon continues upstream into Curecanti National Recreation Area and downstream into Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area. The canyon's name owes itself to the fact that parts of the gorge only receive 33 minutes of sunlight a day, according to The Black Canyon of the Gunnison. In the book, Vandenbusche states, Several canyons of the American West are longer and some are deeper, but none combines the depth, sheerness, narrowness, darkness, and dread of the Black Canyon.

Gunnison National Park Preview
Gunnison Canyon was a fun challenging hike. In less than 2 miles your decent is 1800 feet to the bottom of the river. The canyon rim offers great views and the river basin allows you to feel the natural power that created the canyon thousands of years ago. This hike is usually overlooked and is a true gem in colorado.

ABOUT BLACK CANYON OF THE GUNNISON NATIONAL PARK
The canyon has been a mighty barrier to humans. Only its rims, never the gorge, show evidence of human occupation - not even by Ute Indians living in the area since written history began.
The story about the first successful expedition through the Canyon on the Gunnison River is incredible. With two million years to work, the Gunnison River, along with the forces of weathering, sculpted this vertical wilderness of rock, water, and sky. In 1901, the U.S. Geological Survey sent Abraham Lincoln Fellows and William Torrence into the canyon to look for a site to build a diversion tunnel bringing water from the river to the Uncompahgre Valley, which was suffering from water shortages due to an influx of settlers into the area. Torrence, an area native and an expert mountaineer, had taken part in a failed expedition the previous year, and his experience proved valuable on his second excursion. He opted to bring a single rubber air mattress instead of the heavy wooden boats that had doomed his previous journey into the canyon. They entered the canyon equipped with only hunting knives, two silk lifeline ropes, and rubber bags to encase their instruments. After a harrowing 10 days braving rock falls, waterfalls, and 76 river crossings, they emerged from the canyon with a suitable tunnel site.
Today, Black Canyon of the Gunnison offers the perfect spot for scenic drives where you can peer 2,000 feet below the often guardrail-less edge to see the Gunnison River that descends in elevation at one of the fastest rates of any North American River. Experienced rock climbers find a playground here, but the majority of visitors enjoy hikes, nature trails, drives, Gold Medal fishing and generally admiring natural wonders while in the park.
Pack a picnic and lunch at Gunnison Point to refuel for your afternoon adventures. Spot the fastest bird in the world, the Peregrine falcon, as it jets across the canyon exceeding speeds of 200 miles per hour, all while a mule deer mother and her fawn munch on wildflowers. And visitors that won’t be making an appearance? Venomous snakes --- night temperatures are too cold for them.
That’s just a small part of the adventure and beauty you’ll find here in this beautiful National Park Service unit!

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, CO- South Rim
A dark scar in the earth is filled with twisting emerald green water. The advantage this canyon has over the grander one in the southwest is all 53 miles of the gorge are visible in just a few hours' drive.
There's more hiking trails in the remote northern section, but either byway offers plenty of views into this narrow, dark chasm.

The Black Canyon - Colorado
In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick, Regan, Maggie, and Kate traveled to The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in Colorado, which just became a United States National Park in 1999. The Black Canyon is unique because it is a relatively unknown national park, so it is not crowded and campsites are available on a first come basis. The Gunnison River rushes through the canyon, creating steep walls and amazing views, especially at the Sunset View and Dragon Point lookouts. Hiking in the Black Canyon is exciting, with interesting hikes with park rangers and more adventurous hikes that go down the steep canyon walls to the river below. The local wildlife is seen throughout the park, including deer that stroll casually through the campgrounds. For a vacation that offers the full national park experience without the crowds and traffic of the more well-known parks, The Black Canyon of the Gunnison is among the most beautiful and enjoyable national parks we've visited.
