Friday Crafternoon No. 07: Miranda Thomas Tree of Life Dinner Plate
Hand-thrown plates show the depth of the potter's skill. Great finesse is necessary to produce beautiful and balanced plates with finely freehand decorated rims.
In this video, Master Potter Evan Williams demonstrates throwing a plate followed by Master Potter Jessica King’s freehand decoration.
Evan starts with a piece of clay about 4 1/2 lbs. He then centers and shapes the plate. Once the plate has dried to a leather hard state, a layer of slip is applied and allowed to dry. He then places it upside down and trims off the excess clay to form the final shape.
Once Evan is done trimming, Jessica draws the decoration with an African Porcupine quill. The quill has a soft, round tip with a subtle flexibility that creates a smooth, gentle line. She then carves away the negative space around her decoration.
Once the decoration is finished, the plate is bisque-fired at around 1800°F and after it has come out of the kiln a clear glaze is applied. It is then glazed-fired at around 2300°F.
You can purchase these plates and other Miranda Thomas Pottery pieces online or in-store.
