Hagia Sophia (; from the Greek Αγία Σοφία, pronounced [aˈʝia soˈfia], Holy Wisdom; Latin: Sancta Sophia or Sancta Sapientia; Turkish: Ayasofya) is the former Greek Orthodox Christian patriarchal cathedral, later an Ottoman imperial mosque and now a museum (Ayasofya Müzesi) in Istanbul, Turkey. Built in 537 AD at the beginning of the Middle Ages, it was famous in particular for its massive dome. It was the world's largest building and an engineering marvel of its time. It is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture and is said to have changed the history of architecture. The Hagia Sophia construction consists of mostly masonry. The structure is composed of brick and mortar joints that are 1.5 times the width of the bricks. The mortar joints are composed of a combination of sand and minute ceramic pieces displaced very evenly throughout the mortar joints. This combination of sand and ceramic pieces could be considered to be the equivalent of modern concrete at the time. From the date of its construction's completion in 537 until 1453, it served as an Eastern Orthodox cathedral and the seat of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, except between 1204 and 1261, when it was converted by the Fourth Crusaders to a Roman Catholic cathedral under the Latin Empire. The building was later converted into an Ottoman mosque from 29 May 1453 until 1931. It was then secularized and opened as a museum on 1 February 1935. It remained the world's largest cathedral for nearly a thousand years, until Seville Cathedral was completed in 1520.
In 1453, Constantinople was conquered by the Ottoman Empire under Mehmed the Conqueror, who ordered this main church of Orthodox Christianity converted into a mosque. Although some parts of the city of Constantinople had fallen into disrepair, the cathedral had been maintained with funds set aside for this purpose, and the Christian cathedral made a strong impression on the new Ottoman rulers who conceived its conversion. The bells, altar, iconostasis, and other relics were destroyed and the mosaics depicting Jesus, his Mother Mary, Christian saints, and angels were also destroyed or plastered over. Islamic features – such as the mihrab (a niche in the wall indicating the direction toward Mecca, for prayer), minbar (pulpit), and four minarets – were added. It remained a mosque until 1931 when it was closed to the public for four years. It was re-opened in 1935 as a museum by the Republic of Turkey. Hagia Sophia was, as of 2014, the second-most visited museum in Turkey, attracting almost 3.3 million visitors annually. According to data released by the Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry, Hagia Sophia was Turkey's most visited tourist attraction in 2015.From its initial conversion until the construction of the nearby Sultan Ahmed Mosque, aka the Blue Mosque of Istanbul, in 1616, it was the principal mosque of Istanbul. The Byzantine architecture of the Hagia Sophia served as inspiration for many other Ottoman mosques, including the Blue Mosque, the Şehzade Mosque, the Süleymaniye Mosque, the Rüstem Pasha Mosque and the Kılıç Ali Pasha Complex.
On 24 March 2019, the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said that the Hagia Sophia might be reverted to a mosque.

Hagia Sophia, Istanbul, 532-37 (architects: Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles)

Hagia Sophia, Istanbul, Turkey
Hagia Sophia (or Ayasofya in Turkish) is a grand example of surviving Byzantine architecture. Located in the Old City in Istanbul, Turkey, the current Hagia Sophia dates back to 537 and it has served as an Eastern Orthodox Cathedral, a Roman Catholic Cathedral and an Imperial Mosque before being converted into a museum in 1935.
The interior is magnificient and breathtaking. Very astounding to see both Christian and Islamic elements in the same place. It is also amazing to see how well-preserved the architecture and mosaics are, after so many centuries.
Be sure to go there early to avoid the crowds!

Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya), Istanbul, Turkey
I have visited Hagia Sophia in March, 2014, while I jointed the on-seite practice of the Global Resource Management Program of Doshisha University.
Hagia Sophia is the one of the most visited museums and most prominent monuments in the world in terms of art and the history of architecture. It has also been called the eighth wonder of the world by East Roman Philon as far back as the 6th century.
The current Hagia Sophia is the third construction, done in a different architectural style, even though it occupies the same location as the previous two. The original building was constructed by the most important architects of the period (527-565), Anthemios (Tralles) and Isidoros (Miletus), under the order of Emperor Justinianos. It is mentioned in the resources that during its construction period, the two prominent architects each had 100 architects working under them, who in turn had 100 workers each working under them.
The construction of the Hagia Sophia began on February 23, 532. It was completed before long, approximately within 5 years and 10 months. It was then opened to divine service with a great ceremony on December 27, 537.
It was used as a church for 916 years but, following the conquest of Istanbul by Fatih Sultan Mehmed, the Hagia Sophia was converted into mosque. Afterwards, it was used as a mosque for 482 years. Under the order of Atatürk and the decision of the Council of Ministers, Hagia Sophia was converted into a museum in 1935.

HAGIA SOPHIA MUSEUM | HOW TO VISIT PROPERLY | Istanbul Travel Guide 2019
I hope this video will help visitors finding their way easly in one of the most important sights in Istanbul and the world. I shot the footage in Hagia Sophia Istanbul in April 2019. The Hagia Sophia Museum was quite empty. Normally there will be always a long line on the ticket office. Also, to pass the security check takes time. That means it will be not that easy to enter the Ayasofya, like i did :)
Please open the SUBTITLES and concentrate on the HISTORY and ART of this almost 1500 year old masterpiece. THANK YOU
The Hagia Sophia is one of the most important Byzantine structures. It is the biggest church constructed by the East Roman Empire in Istanbul. When Justinian and Theodora ruled in Constantinople the previous church on the same place was demolished 532, after the public riot (Nika revolts) that took place during the reign of Emperor Justinianos.
After the revolt Justinian built the Megale Ekklesia (Big Church) again between 532 and 537 (5 years 11 months) and the church was referred as the Hagia Sophia (Holy Wisdom).
The building was later converted by Mehmet the Conqueror (Fatih Sultan Mehmet) into an Ottoman mosque after the Conquest of Constantinople. The minarets designed and implemented by Mimar Sinan (2 of them) have also served to this purpose.
The Hagia Sophia became a museum in 1935.

We are going to visit the second level (known as the Upper Galleries) and we will visit the spot where the Empress’ Loge was located. The Byzantine empress would sit on a throne next to the ladies of her court and watch the church services down below. The view is spectacular from there, but it’s even better when there is no scaffolding..
Istanbul is a major city in Turkey that straddles Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus Strait. Its Old City reflects cultural influences of the many empires that once ruled here. In the Sultanahmet district, the open-air, Roman-era Hippodrome was for centuries the site of chariot races, and Egyptian obelisks also remain. The iconic Byzantine Hagia Sophia features a soaring 6th-century dome and rare Christian mosaics.
Turkey is a nation straddling eastern Europe and western Asia with cultural connections to ancient Greek, Persian, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires. Cosmopolitan Istanbul, on the Bosphorus Strait, is home to the iconic Hagia Sophia, with its soaring dome and Christian mosaics, the massive 17th-century Blue Mosque and the circa-1460 Topkapı Palace, former home of sultans. Ankara is Turkey’s modern capital.

Explore the Hagia Sophia. Built by the Romans 1,500 years ago, it was the biggest church in the world.
No expense was spared: coloured marble from around the Roman Empire and nearly 10,000 square meters of gold mosaic. In 1453, the Hagia Sophia was turned into a mosque after Ottoman Turks conquered the city.
Now a museum, it has survived earthquakes, sieges and the rise and fall of empires.
Yet Hagia Sophia still stands, the ancient jewel in the crown of Istanbul.
