A day of discovery on Haida Gwaii
On August 23, the Nature Conservancy of Canada hosted its first ever Conservation Volunteers event on Haida Gwaii. This stunning archipelago off of BC's northern coast is as remote as it is beautiful, and so we weren't sure how many people we could rally together for a day of exploring on NCC's Kumdis River Conservation Area.
The day dawned bright and sunny — perfect for an event that was calling on nature lovers of all ages to come out to a forest scavenger hunt. At the Port Clements school we met up with a keen group of local youngsters and adults, as well as a few summer tourists. After the short drive out to the conservation area, we stretched our legs with a walk along the estuary. This rich intertidal area is one of the key features of this conservation area, providing important habitat for salmon, migratory birds and a host of other species. As if to underscore the richness of the estuary, three sandhill cranes flew in, landed next to us and came along for the walk along the estuary.

Haida Gwaii
Haida Gwaii, formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands and the Charlottes, is an archipelago on the North Coast of British Columbia, Canada. Approximately half of its population is of the Haida people.
The islands are separated from the British Columbia mainland to the east by Hecate Strait. Vancouver Island lies to the south, across Queen Charlotte Sound, while the U.S. state of Alaska is to the north, across the disputed Dixon Entrance.

Haida Carver: Ancient Stories and Connecting with Ancestors
Jaalen Edenshaw is a Haida carver whose work can be seen all over Canada. A member of the Ts’aahl – Eagle Clan of the Haida Nation, Jaalen grew up surrounded by Haida art and began his training at a young age working with renowned carvers like his father, Guujaaw and James Hart. Inspired by the Old Haida Stories and the work of the Old Masters before him, Jaalen looks to the past as a guide that influences his contemporary work.
Haida art can be described as a dance between flow and form where everything comes out of the shape before it. Throughout the process of carving—searching for stories, picking a tree, the roughing out, and watching a character come alive at the end of a piece—is quite satisfying for Jaalen. But more than that, much of the process is about storytelling and delving into the old stories, speaking to elders and learning as much as he can about what he conveys in the piece.
The evidence of his ancestors work is all over the land and is found throughout the lush forests that span Haida Gwaii, an archipelago off the West Coast of British Columbia. Filled with trees that have been growing for thousands of years and cultural roots that pre-date the last Ice Age, it’s no wonder that when Jaalen drops down into the forest he can find the remnants of his ancestors. From pulled bark that was used for weaving, to old chop marks and trees that were used to make canoes, walking through the forest with Jaalen is like walking through a natural museum.
Jaalen always knew he’d be a carver, feels lucky to be making a living doing it, and continues to pass the knowledge and artistry down to the next generation and his own children.

evolution nisga'a haida totem pole Movie
thie is a totem pole I carved, it is called evolution. the idea came from when I was watching the discovery channel and the show I was watching said that whales were once large wolf like creatures that lived by the ocean. I thaought imagine going to the beach and seeing a pack of wolves the size of whales. so from the chin up it is a whale, form the ears down it is a wolf, it is a transformation figure. I am a native of Nisga'a and Haida descent.
Risso's dolphin found on Haida Gwaii
iologists are trying to figure out what killed a rare dolphin found on Haida Gwaii over the weekend.
The 3.3 meter Risso's, or Grampus dolphin was discovered washed up on a beach near Tlel by a pair of residents Saturday night.
Researchers with the Vancouver Aquarium and B.C. Cetacean Sightings Network, who were on the island teaching a workshop on how to deal with stranded marine mammals, say there was no obvious sign as to what led to the animal's death.
