Halfway to Hana
We planned to drive to Hana...a famous Maui destination that requires travel on some very narrow roads. It is a beautiful drive but it is also long and windy. Makes for a little discomfort and so we only went half way on this trip.

Maui: The Road To Hana (In Reverse): Twin Falls, Hana Lava Tube, Wai'anapanapa Black Sand Beach
To wrap up our trip to Maui, we drove the infamous Road to Hana -- but FROM Hana to avoid traffic! We hit some of the highlights along the way including Wai'anapanapa State Park (black sand beach) at mile 32, the Hana Lava Tube at mile 31, kalua pork tacos at mile 29, banana bread & shaved ice at mile 17, Twin Falls at mile 2, and Ho'okipa State Beach for sea turtles at mile 1.

Maui part 3: The Road to Hana, first part (includes mile markers)
(Time-stamps and info, below.)
In this part, I chronicle the first part of driving on The Road to Hana via time-lapse, clips, and images. Starting at Ho'okipa Lookout, where Part 2 ended, we head south on 36, which becomes 360, The Road to Hana. As we transitioned from a drier environment to the incredible beauty of a lush jungle, we were forced to slow down, to enjoy the drive. It's well worth the time and effort to venture this route, where one can gorge on Nature and can sample another time that's uniquely preserved, thanks to the terrain.

Tips:
--While it can be done in a day trip, I recommend spending at least one night in Hana. If you do plan on day-tripping it, then start early; I don't recommend the return trip in the dark.
--Secure valuables in your vehicle, keeping them out of view, if you plan to be away from your vehicle for an extended time. It's safe, but there might be a few opportunists, as there are nearly anywhere you go.
--Start with a full tank of gas.
--Check road conditions before you start; mudslides can close the road, if not delay traffic:
--Be prepared for muddy jungle conditions, e.g., sturdy shoes, towels, mosquito repellent; be aware that not all trails to the waterfalls are ideal for everyone. Slippahs/flip-flops should be ok if you only plan to enjoy the drive, opting out of any paths to waterfalls, etc, but it doesn't hurt to have sturdy shoes handy.
--Have cash handy for the little stands and vendors along the road.
--There are a few spots you can purchase water and refreshments but I'd advise to procure some, before hitting the road.
--Please respect the land and people.
--Instead of succumbing to any road rage--fellow rubberneckers, one-lane bridges, slower speed limits, etc--enjoy the pace and the beauty. It's a gem of a route; savor it. Embrace Aloha.

Cruising in Hana Maui - Day 3 of our Maui Westy Adventure
Waking up to a beautiful Hāna sunrise is surreal, especially from the back of a Westy. Day 3 marked the halfway point of our van life week on Maui. We spent it on the east side of Maui swimming at the black sand beaches of Waiʻānapanapa and Hāna Bay, playing on pink sand beach of Kōkī, and hiking through the ʻOheʻo Gulch in Kipahulu. Some say that the drive to Hāna is all about the trip and not the destination, but we would have to disagree. It is gorgeous on this end of the island - and the best part was the lack of a cell signal. Living truly unplugged.

Manoa Falls Trail 11/22/2017 [HD]. You park at the old Paradise Park parking lot for $5 and walk up the road until you see the Manoa Falls Trail sign. This is a valley hike that takes about 50 minutes (round trip) valley hike, I'm only showing you one way (25 minutes). This trail is usually a little muddy to very muddy. Watch for slippery wet rocks. Special thanks to (Kumu) Dr Sam 'Ohu Gon III for use of his Pule Pale which you can watch by scanning the code in the video or go to this link
BEST MAUI TRAVEL GUIDE
BEST MAUI TRAVEL GUIDE
This video shares our Maui Hawaii Travel Guide for Families with a Toddler.
Our MUST SEE PLACES in Maui with a Toddler include:
1) BABY BEACH:
The reason we wanted to go to Hawaii was to just enjoy the beaches. Our favorite beach that was very family friendly was called Baby Beach. It has shallow, crystal clear, calm water and soft sand. It also has some great snorkeling spots for older kids.
2) SWIMMING POOL:
I know you can find a pool anywhere you are (not just Hawaii) but we also had a lot of fun swimming in our condo's pool. It's easy entertainment that is usually right outside any of Hawaii's hotels or apartments.
3) MAUI OCEAN CENTER:
It's named Top 10 Aquariums in the World.
It is open every day from 9-5 and is about $35 for adults.(and heads up, you can often find promotional code discounts in tourist magazines to purchase your ticket online).
4) ROAD TO HANA:
I wish we could have spent a few days here. The biggest tip we learned was DO ALL the research before you go because there is no cell service on the road. Know all the mile markers you want to stop at and then make sure you have enough time to see them all. (don't try to plan too much in a day).
Also, heads up...the halfway to Hana Stand at Mile Marker #17 has THE BEST banana bread!
**Our favorite family friendly stops on the Road to Hana is Mile Marker #10 (The Garden of Eden Arboretum)
{BEST PLACE TO STOP ON ROAD TO HANA WITH FAMILY:
**and Mile Marker #32 (Wai'anapanapa State Park featuring Black Sand Beach.)
{ROAD TO HANA BEACH:
5) NAKALELE BLOWHOLE AND HEART SHAPED ROCK:
If your toddler doesn't mind being held while hiking, the Nakalele Blowhole is another fun spot with rocks and gorgeous views. It also has a heart shaped rock, so make sure you bring your cameras. Watch the video below for more details and directions on how to get there.

6) SNORKELING:
If you go to Hawaii as a family, switch off going snorkeling with someone else watching the kids. This was my first time snorkeling and it was incredible!

All About Road to Hana - Stops and 5 Tips for First Time Travelers
Road to Hana is the most celebrated road in maui, Hawaii. It is one of the Must things to do in Maui. The whole trip takes the entire day and you will find lots of maginicent waterfalls, ocean views, Twin falls, stores selling banana bread and shaved ice, across the journey. The road also has over 600 hairpin curves and 50 plus single lane bridges. You will hardly be able to drive over 20 MPH the entire time.
Road to Hana Stops - Below are some of my favorite mile markers to stop and take in the views, may be dip into the pools:
1. Paia Bay Coffee - The Road to Hana starts from here
2. Hookipa Beach - this beach is famous amongst surfers and for the sun bathing turtles
3. Twin Falls - They have a fairy pool here to bathe in
4. Halfway to Hana - stop by here for some shaved ice and banana bread
5. Upper Waikani Falls - This is a gorgeous tiered water fall. You will fall in love I bet!
6. Waianapanapa State Park - This place is famous for the magnificent black sand beach! Also has blowholes from where the water comes in during high tides making whale snorting noises. And the cave tunnels are out of the world!
Some of my top tips for first time travelers:
1. Start early to make most of the day
2. Fill up gas at Paia town - no gas stations ahead
3. Load Google Maps or carry a physical map - no Wifi ahead
4. Carry cash - the roadside vendors take nothing else
5. Consider spending the night at Hana, to cover all the points without worrying about returning before sunset

VLOG 15 - Hawaii Honeymoon Part Two: Maui
We spent the remaining six days of our honeymoon exploring Maui and stayed in a cozy Airbnb in Kihei. We enjoyed two beautiful scenic drives, the Road to Hana and West Maui and had an amazing snorkeling tour with Redline Rafting Co. at Molokini Crater.
If you visit Kihei, we discovered the best breakfast you will ever eat at the Kihei Cafe. We went every morning to get pancakes and POG. Just know they are cash only!
We spent an entire day journeying through the Road to Hana with the help from the Shaka Guide app. We followed the tour which included the backside to Hana. Below are some of our favorite stops!
-Twin Falls
-Garden of Eden
-Halfway to Hana for the famous banana bread
-Puahokamoa Falls
-Coconut Glens (Vegan Ice Cream)
Wai’anapanapa State Park
Wailua Falls
Hamoa Beach
We spent our last day enjoying the views from on top of a volcano at Haleakala State Park. There are many options when visiting Haleakala, but we chose to drive to the top. Don't forget to pack a jacket, it gets chilly up there!
Maui by Campervan - Renting a Hymer Aktiv to see Haleakala National Park!
Summer 2018 - We took a detour from our regular lower 48 RV roadtrips and spent two weeks in Hawaii with the extended family just outside of Honolulu.
Of course the RV wanderlust desire inside of us needed a bit of fresh air - so we hopped over to Maui and rented a new Hymer Aktiv from a great local company to explore the island.
We discovered Waianapanapa State Park, the Road to Hana, Halfway to Hana, and both sides of Haleakala National Park. What an amazing land of contrasts, and how cool to travel in a VERY easy to drive Class B!
It was a big change from our 36ft 4-slide Class A, but we managed to fit the four of us inside.
Many thanks to the great guys at Campervan Hawaii for a great Hymer to rent and awesome service!
(Tip - RVs are not supposed to park in the Hosmer Grove Campground; we got a stern talking-to by the Ranger there the next morning. Of course we didn't see the fine print, and when we arrived the previous night many others were already in the grass. So don't do what we did, but on the other hand there wasn't any place else level to park. Another one of those Hawaii contradictions we discovered...)
Waikamoi Nature Trail, Road to Hana, Maui, July 2016
This is a short hike on the Road to Hana on Maui. The hike takes about 30 minutes and is a wonderful stroll through the rainforest.

Maui’s Stunning Hana Highway
There’s no better way to experience Maui than from behind the wheel, along the legendary Hana Highway. It’s one of the most scenic drives in the world. Wind through a patchwork of rainforest, waterfalls and stunning coastline, with stops along the way to meet the locals and indulge in fresh tropical produce. This is one journey you’ll never forget.

Hosmer Grove in Haleakela, Maui
While my brother trimmed trees in Kula, I took a few hours to run halfway up Haleakela to Hosmer Grove. In the 1800's settlers cleared the native ohi'a and koa. In order to stop erosion and to jump start a possible timber industry, Ralph Hosmer planted tree species from all over the world. Conditions at 6500 feet (2000 m) are pretty harsh, so only 13 species still survive today.
I love ranger led hikes! These people work for small pay and are looking out for wildlife and nature. They have a lot to teach us.
The music in the beginning is from the Joshua Kaye Quartet Live! album.
Episode. 2 | Road to Hana
Going to Maui? Definitely Check out the Road to Hana!
Below are some common checkpoints tourists like to visit!
#1 - Mile Marker 2: Twin Falls
#2 - Mile Marker 4.5: Huelo Lookout
#3 - Mile Marker 9: Waikamoi Ridge Forest Trail
#4 - Mile Marker 10.5: Garden of Eden ( GREAT TACOS )
#5 - Mile Marker 17: Keane Peninsula
#6 - Mile Marker 17.3: Halfway to Hana Snack Shop
#7 - Mile Marker 18: Wailua Overlook
#8 - Mile Marker 19: Upper Wailua (3 Bears)
#9 - Mile Marker 27: Nahiku Ti Gallery + Coffee
#10 - Mile Marker 32.2: Wainapanapa Sate Wayside Park
#11 - Mile Marker 34: Kaihalulu Red Sand Beach
#12 - Mile Marker 45: Wailua Falls
Whether you're staying in a nice resort or a cozy AirB&B, there are lots of rental car services on the island. Our advice is to get the cheapest and smallest vehicle! With the tight turns and narrow roads, having something with good handling and very little width is ideal!
