7 hour tour of Halifax with Halifax Titanic Tours 10/3/17
On our cruise to NE/Canada we were lucky enough to get the services of Paul McNeil, one of the (if not the) top tour guides in Halifax. The tour was fantastic and lasted seven hours. Paul's motto is that, he takes you where you will not see other tour group. We saw a Titanic graveyard, The Citadel - we were in front, and a fisherman's village, like Peggy's Cove but with NO OTHER tourists. And Paul knows his history too. This 10-minute video captures some highlights.

Whenever you travel to Canada don't miss the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax. The museum is dedicated to seafaring has several changing exhibitions. The main collection is composed of shipping equipment from different eras and provides a comprehensive overview of the history of seafaring and fishing. A second large collection shows model ships whose main piece is the detailed replica of the RMS Franconia II, the famous ship of the Cunard Line.

Walking Tour of Halifax and Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia
This is kind of a tour/history lesson of our experience in Halifax and beautiful Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia. It was the second stop on our cruise from Boston to Montreal and we only had part of one day to see what we could see. The lighthouse and town of Peggy's Cove is about a 45 minute drive by bus from Halifax so that chewed up part of the day. Halifax is a bustling tourist area that was made even more busy with our cruise ship in port. We didn't have time to see any museums but our goal was to walk around as much of the city as we could in the few hours we had available. The waterfront boardwalk is a must-see and, if you get the chance, stop at the immigration museum.

Titanic Memorial in Halifax
Sunday marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of Titanic. Many cities held memorial events on this day.
CNC World takes you to Canada's Halifax, the nearest harbor city to Titanic's sinking location one hundred years ago.
Halifax held a Titanic commemoration event in the Fairview Lawn Cemetery on Sunday, where 121 of the victims were buried.
Children held roses over the 121 graves, each bearing the same date of death, April 15, 1912.
Hundreds of people joined the memorial to remember those lost and paid their tribute to people who had the gruesome task of recovering bodies from the Atlantic Ocean.
Scottish bagpipe and memorial songs moved all at presence.
SOUNDBITE: WARREN ERVINE, VICTIM'S RELATIVE
It's wonderful to have a lot of people coming from all around the world to come here and visit the sites and go back home to tell others about it, because it's a fantastic and very very sad location a hundred years ago. And I think a lot of people haven't appreciated the enormity of having so many people drawn at once.
Ervine's uncle, Albert was the youngest crew member of Titanic. He was an electrical engineer who was responsible for maintaining the lights on the Titanic. Witness said the lights were on when Titanic went down.
SOUNDBITE: WARREN ERVINE, VICTIM'S RELATIVE
My dad, years ago, he was very sad about talking about Albert his brother, so I didn't learn a lot about Albert from my dad. But in years since then, I have done a lot of research and realized that he was not just a person who went down with the Titanic, he was a hero, because he kept the lights on and may perhaps saved some lives.
Ervine moved to Halifax, the city with closest connection with Titanic years ago. He spent around 10 years in doing the research about Titanic. And he thought that it was the best way to remember the history and pay tribute to the lost lives in the tragedy.
SOUNDBITE: WARREN ERVINE, VICTIM'S RELATIVE
I think people are interested in what happened 100 years ago, the technology, the science have approved a lot in the last few years. So we are able to answer some of the questions about not only the people on the Titanic, but the ship itself.
Many people in Halifax have different stories related to Titanic. The city was the last city which received the signal from Titanic and then sent rescue ships. In all, 150 of those who perished in the disaster are buried in three different cemeteries in Halifax.
Sunday marked the end of week-long events commemorating the journey of the ill-fated ship in the city.

Halifax Peggy's Cove - A Titanic Connection
Halifax's Peggy's Cove was named after a two year old girl who was found by the locals near the shore. They found out years later that she was the only survivor of a family of seven who perished in the Titanic tragedy. They could not identify who she was because in those days, the communication was almost nonexistent. Only when DNA technology came along years later did they find her distant family in England. She was given the name of Margaret by the locals, adopted by a local husband and wife who recently lost their only child. Peggy is the nickname for Margaret.
Titanic Graveyard Fairview Lawn Cemetery All the Tombs (Halifax Canada)
121 victims of the RMS Titanic sinking are buried at Fairview, many with named tombstones but also many unidentified. A baby's tomb was for nearly a 100 years identified as The unknown child was finally identified as Sidney Leslie Goodwin lost along with his whole family. The Gravestones are arranged in the shape of a ship with the 'Unknown Child' at the prow. People leave coins and momentoes on the tomb of the Baby Goodwin, I wish we had brought something. Girls used to leave flowers on the Gravestone of J Dawson imagining him to be the 'Jack Dawson' of the movie but we saw none. I've been a Titanic fanatic for many years so this was an important moment for me. The identification of the Baby Goodwin can down to a fleck in the DNA of the the babies who matched, there is a fascinating documentary on YouTube about this where it turned out that two babies matched the DNA of the tiny body in the grave because they had shared an ancestor in the past 1000 years and also because a Canadian Mountie couldn't bring himself to obey orders and burn the tiny shoes of the 'Unknown Child'. We had earlier visited the smaller Catholic Cemetery for Titanic victims and sadly had no time to visit the Jewish Cemetery. If you are interested in this sort of stuff there is a LOT to see in Halifax (Windy City) so reserve a couple of days.
There is the Maritime Museum & the Immigration Museum (pier 21). The Halifax Explosion killed 2000 people and destroyed the city. The Empress of Ireland sinking which cost a 1000 lives.
The Titanic Cemetery is just a tiny part of Fairview which is huge. We drove by on the freeway without seeing anyway to get in so do your planning:-

Halifax (Part 1) - Mount Olivet Cemetery
Halifax is known as the City of the Dead and for good reason. We'll be taking you on a tour of the various Titanic sites in and around the city from cemeteries to memorials and specific locations. This footage was compiled while Matt and Tom were in Halifax in June, and when Tom visited a second time in September, 2017.
In this episode, you'll learn about the 19 graves at Mount Olivet Cemetery, as well as hear the stories of the Halifax Explosion of 1917. You'll also get to see a replica hearse, similar to the ones that carried the Titanic victims to their rest.
In the next Episode, we'll visit Fairview Cemetery, where over 129 victims lay.
