Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve Oahu, Hawaii
The walk down the hill to go snorkeling at Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve on Oahu, Hawaii. April 27, 2012
Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, Oahu Island, Hawaii
Recorded: May 2019
Hanauma Bay is a beautiful place for relaxing, swimming and snorkeling. One of the most popular tourist destinations on the island. Admission costs $ 7.50. Snorkel and scuba mask can be rented in place.
Hanauma Bay Tips | Oahu, Hawaii
Come explore one of the best places to snorkel on Oahu. We'll show you how to get there, how to find turtles, and answer all your questions along the way.
First things first, Hanauma Bay is CLOSED ON TUESDAYS. Always. No exceptions. Plan accordingly.
Also, make sure your sunscreen is reef safe.
Hanauma Bay is on the far southeast corner of Oahu. It's some of the best snorkeling and one of the best beaches in all of Hawaii, not just on Oahu. It was voted Best Beach in the US in 2016. And we can vouch for the snorkeling - it's incredible! So many fish and such a large area to explore so it doesn't seem overcrowded. There are also plenty of areas that are shallow enough to stand if you're not a strong swimmer (only stand on the sandy areas, never stand on rocks or coral). But there are lots of deeper areas to explore as well. Such a great variety of fish, coral, and depths.
GETTING THERE
Shuttle:
You can book a shuttle straight from Waikiki hotels. Check out their site for that info.
Taxi:
It's like $40-$50 from Waikiki. Hard pass.
Drive yourself:
If you have a rental car, it's $1 to park. There are only 300 spots and it will be full by 8am for sure. If you can't go early, go after lunch when people start to leave.
Take the bus:
Buses are $2.75 per ride or $5.50 for an all-day pass. Tell the bus driver what you want (one way or all day) before you pay.
The only bus that goes to Hanauma Bay is Route 22. We suggest getting on as early in the route as possible. It starts in Waikiki near the intersection of Ala Moana and Kalakaua. The bus was completely full before we got to the zoo and we started skipping bus stops that were full of people wanting to get on. The bus will take about 35-45 minutes from Waikiki. See all the bus details here:
If you're not in Waikiki, you can take the Route 2 bus from Honolulu to Waikiki. Get off at Kalakaua and walk over a block to the first bus stop. You should see a few other people who are obviously going to the beach.
Snorkel with turtles:
We showed this in the video, but in case you didn't catch it, if you want to see a turtle while snorkeling in Hanauma Bay, look for groups of people hovering in the same spot. 9 times out of 10, they're all staring at a turtle. Feel free to swim near the turtles, but do not touch them.

Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, Hawaii
Yes, this is the same place President Obama and family went snorkeling last year. It is a world famous toruist attraction hence packed with many foreign tourists. It is very accessible by tourists. Many hotels on Waikiki beach have shuttle service to take you there for $14.95. Look up Google Maps for instructions to take city buses there from Waikiki hotel region, $2.50 fare for adults and $1.25 for youngsters. Each visitor has to play $7.50 for admission to enter the preserve. It is free for Hawaii residents. You are required to watch a short video on nature preservation and snorkeling safety. Then you can walk from the visitor center down to the beach, or you can take a shuttle tram, $0.75 going down, $1.00 coming up. The walk down is scenic and you should save that 75 cents if you are healthy. There are equipment rentals down on the beach.
The park closes on Tuesdays. Plan your trip accordingly.
If you decide to drive there, make sure you arrive early because parking is limited. $1 per car for parking. Taking the city bus is a better alternative.
As you can see from the aerial views in the video, the bay has patches of light and dark areas. The light blue patches are sandy area, no fish live there. The darker areas are the reefs, you will see a lot of fish when you swim over them.
These clips were shot in Hawaii with a Fuji film XP 10 waterproof camera. There were a lot of tourists at this place. The water is not as clear as that on the North shore. But the North shore is not suitable for snorkeling in winter months due to pounding high waves up to 30 feet tall. In summer months, the north shore is as calm as a lake. See my other videos on snorkeling at the 3 tables.

HAWAII: EXPLORING NATURE at MANOA TRAILS and FALLS in OAHU (USA) ????️
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go to the beautiful island of Oahu, in the American State of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean and let's visit the very popular (and very beautiful) Manoa Hiking Trails and Waterfalls, located just a few kilometers outside of Honolulu.
The Manoa hiking trails are located above Waikiki in the Manoa Valley mountainside. The trails are a somewhat easy but still an adventurous hike through a lush bamboo and guava tree forest.
Oahu is a U.S. island in the Central Pacific, part of the Hawaiian island chain and home to the state capital, Honolulu. Highlights of the city include historic Chinatown and the Punchbowl, a crater-turned-cemetery. Waikiki is an iconic beach, dining and nightlife area. West of Honolulu is Pearl Harbor, site of the WWII's 1941 bombing attack and home to the USS Arizona Memorial.
The prize at the end of this hour hike is a towering 150 ft Oahu waterfall.

Places to see in ( Oahu - USA ) Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve
Places to see in ( Oahu - USA ) Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve
Hanauma is a marine embayment formed within a tuff ring and located along the southeast coast of the Island of Oʻahu in the Hawaii Kai neighborhood of East Honolulu, in the Hawaiian Islands. Hanauma is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Island and has suffered somewhat from overuse (at one time accommodating over three million visitors per year). In 1956, dynamite was used to clear portions of the reef to make room for telephone cables linking Hawaii to the west coast of the US.
The word hana means bay in the Hawaiian language (the usual addition of bay in its name is thus redundant). There are two etymological interpretations of the second part of its name. One interpretation derives it from the Hawaiian word for curve, referring to either the shape of the feature or to the shape of the indigenous canoes that were launched there. Another stems from the indigenous hand-wrestling game known as Uma.
Hanauma is both a Nature Preserve and a Marine Life Conservation District (the first of several established in the State of Hawaiʻi). Reflecting changes in attitude, its name has changed over time from Hanauma Bay Beach Park to Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve.[5] Visitors are required by law to refrain from mistreating marine animals or from touching, walking, or otherwise having contact with coral heads, which appear much like large rocks on the ocean floor (here, mostly seaward of the shallow fringing reef off the beach). It is always recommended to avoid contacting coral or marine rocks as cuts to the skin can result and neglecting such wounds may bring medical problems.
About 400 species of fish are known to inhabit the bay. Hanauma Bay is known for its abundance of Green sea turtles, Chelonia mydas, known as Honu. Hanauma is a nursery ground for the immature turtles, which have their nesting grounds at French Frigate Shoals. It is also known for its abundance of parrotfish.
The Hawaiian Islands are a group of volcanoes that have risen up over a hot spot, which is a section of the Earth's surface that has exhibited volcanism for an extended period of time. Volcanic chains such as the Hawaiian Islands form as a result of the movement of a tectonic plate across fixed hot spot beneath the surface. In the case of the Hawaiian Islands, the Pacific plate has moved slowly northwestward over such a hotspot.
( Oahu - USA ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Oahu. Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Oahu - USA

Hanauma Bay History
Hanauma Bay was declared a protected marine life conservation area and underwater park in 1967
Formed within a volcanic cone, today Hanauma Bay offers a pristine marine ecosystem after the City and County of Honolulu laid out a plan in 1990 to restore the “curved bay,” after years of use from the millions of visitors who visit and love to snorkel Hanauma Bay. Voted the Best Beach in the United States for 2016 our volunteers have a booth located on the beach level to help visitors learn about conservation of the reef and the types of fish that live there.
In 2002 a marine education center was opened for visitors and part of the conservation plan requires first-time visitors to watch a 9 minute video before entering the park so they can learn about the marine life, preservation and safety rules for the park. All visitors are required by law to refrain from mistreating the marine animals and from touching or walking on the coral. In the early 2000's the natural spa called Toilet Bowl because of the rise and fall of water with the waves, was closed due visitor injuries and safety concerns.

it's in the end of this video tour. Those dark spots in the water are corals, or as I call them, rocks. Fish likes to garze the algae from the rock surface, and that's what attracts them there
“There are always new discoveries to be made,” he says. “Beginners can have a great time just by hanging around Waikiki, and repeaters can head out to other islands. There are many ways to enjoy.”
Another characteristic of Hawaiian tourism is the number of visitors whose primary purpose is to go shopping. There are numerous luxury brand stores, and an abundance of boutiques selling exclusive resort clothing, swimwear and accessories, that are only found in the islands. To Japanese, Hawaii is a brand in itself.
For the wealthy, Hawaii’s brand power even extends as far as real estate.
The Kaka’Ako district is situated just over two kilometers northwest of Waikiki. Near the Ala Moana Center, a shopping mall overlooking a beach that features a vast array of brand stores, large-scale redevelopment is progressing and plans to build new condominiums are being announced one after another.
“Oahu has a limited amount of usable land, and the market’s gone into overdrive here,” says Sachi Braden, a 25-year veteran of the local real estate industry. “A lot of Japanese eye properties here as investment opportunities to buy a second home.”

Oahu Island, Hawaii West, East & North Shore
Oahu Island is home to roughly one million people - about two-thirds of the population of the U.S. state of Hawaii. The city of Honolulu, largest city, state capital, and main deepwater marine port for the State of Hawaiʻi is located here.
Well-known features found on Oʻahu include Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Hanauma, Kaneʻohe Bay, Kailua Bay, North Shore.
I spent five days on Oahu Island, drove 340 miles by car and visited, incl. the places described below. My hotel was in Honolulu.
