Chau Doc Phnom Penh speed boat Vietnam Cambodia
This kind of speed boat runs everyday on the Mekong River route to and from Phnom Penh to Chau doc
From Vietnam to Cambodia by Speedboat on the Mekong - Cambodia 4K Travel Channel
The day in Chau Doc in Vietnam started not good at all. We had booked this trip through an internet agency in Germany, in hindsight this turned out to be a serious mistake. Pick up time was 6.45 in the morning, too early to have breakfast at the hotel. Although the agency knew that we are 2 months on the road, they had booked 2 rickshaws instead of a taxi for the transfer to the speedboat to Cambodia. It is only a 15 minute drive, but we had approx 70 kg of luggage.
It became even worse. Halfway the drivers began to ask for a tip. They are so pushy that we have doubts about whether they would bring us to our destination or whether we reach our boat. Our answer is, they would get a tip later when we reach our destination. Upon arrival, I give them a little tip, but less than I would have given them anyway because we felt the begging while driving as quite rude, what we told them.
The boat departs at 7.15. Via the Bassac River, a branch of the Mekong, it goes on to Kenh Xang, a channel that connects the Bassac River with the main branch of the Mekong.
In Bassac River we first pass parts of the floating town, before the appearance of the shore is dominated more and more by vegetation. Modest huts, playing children, fisherman on their boats and cargo boats determine the picture.
Nearly, the border crossing had also become a disaster for us. Everywhere on the Internet you can read that you have to pay $ 30. Beforehand we have asked our guides, whether there are ATMs (ATM) or a bank and if we have sufficient time: Everything is repeatedly affirmed positively. We come to the Vietnamese border guards and are allowed to disembark.
After we have passed the security gates, we came in a big waiting room with terrace. Since we do not know when the boat departs again, our attention is focused on the boat. We cannot discover a bank or an ATM. So we nearly missed a man who is gathering papers (departure, entry form, passports and charges). Later we learned that he is responsible for those who are traveling without a guide.

Chua Hang Cave Pagoda Buddhist Temple located on Sam Mountain, Chau Doc, Mekong Delta, Vietnam
One of the most pleasant surprises on the third day of our Mekong Delta tour was climbing up the 400 + steps to reach the Buddhist temple known as Chua Hang or Cave Pagoda located on Sam Mountain in Chau Doc, Vietnam. Given that we had either been planted in a van and/or boat for the past couple of days, it was a welcome relief having the opportunity to get some rigorous exercise even given the extreme heat and humidity.

At this particular point of the tour, we were starting to get frustrated that we were spending so much time in a cramped situation when we thought our tour would have included more walking and opportunities for exploration. Although, having the opportunity to climb up to this cave slightly redeemed our opinion of the tour, it still was a bit too little too late.
The ascent up the stairs was exhausting given the sweltering heat and humidity but the views were well worth it as small fishing communities and seemingly endless rice fields extended off far into the distance.
For several minutes, I just gazed out at the surroundings down below me realizing how high we had climbed to reach this point.
The Buddhist temple was certainly more quirky than usual. In particular, a reclining Buddha was sporting sunglasses. Without fail, I pulled out my camcorder and dSLR camera to capture this peculiar attraction. I honestly live to capture these oddball travel moments; it's what has kept me on the road as a digital nomad for years on end.
I've seen just about anything in and around temple areas, including smoking monks and other 'interesting' behaviour, but this was indeed the first time to see Buddha donning shades. Who knew Buddha could look so cool? ;)
For those interested in visiting the temple it's worth noting that it is free of charge; and who doesn't like something that is free? ;)

20th Chau Doc Sam Mountain
Trip with Milton Area High School lead by history teacher Mr. Michael Conn. From the Victoria Can Tho Resort, we boarded sampans in the early morning to cruise the upper reaches of the Mekong and stopped at the floating market of Cai Rang. Then departed for Chau Doc. In the late afternoon, watch the sun set over the rice fields of neighboring Cambodia from the summit of Sam Mountain. Sam Mountain (Nui Sam, 284m) is a sacred place for Buddhists. The area hosts many of pagodas and temples. The views reach deep into Cambodia.

Slow boat from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh Cambodia
Great ride up the Mekong from Chau Doc, near the border of Vietnam and Cambodia, to Phnom Penh. This charged an extra $5 ($25 visa instead of $20) but they took care of all the paperwork and we didn't have to deal with immigration at all, which was nice.
