Brief transcript below:
In this Arashiyama Bamboo Grove travel guide, we show you how to get Arashiyama Bamboo Grove in Kyoto, what to do, and offer up tips from our own experiences for your visit to the natural wonder of the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove in kyoto.
We took the JR Sanin Main Line also known as the Sagano line from Kyoto Station to Arashiyama and alighted at Saga-Arashiyama Station
From Saga-Arashiyama Station we walked about 5-10 minute to the entrance of the bamboo garden. There will be signs showing the way to the bamboo forest on the floor of the streets in Japanese and English.
Usually there will be lots of people walking towards the Bamboo Forest entrance, so it makes it easier to identify and walk up the stone pathway. In the alley there will be a few shops selling Japanese souvenirs and food.
Keep walking up this alley and it will lead you into the Bamboo forest Entrance.
Bamboo is considered a symbol of strength and a forest of them wards off evil spirits which is why this bamboo forest has at one end Tenryu-ji Temple.
At the other end of the Bamboo Forest is Okochi-Sanso Villa (open daily, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., admission 1,000 yen), a home that was owned by a very famous Japanese silent film star Denjiro Okochi.
Strolling though the bamboo forest is free and can be done any time of the day or night as it is open 24 hours a day. Of course if you want some great pictures the day time is recommended.
Wear good shoes if you plan to walk and make sure your camera works for some awesome pictures among these tall bamboo forests.
Along the pathway you can visit the Nonomiya shrine and temple.
This Nonomiya Temple and Shrine had a special historical role in preparing imperial princesses to serve as vestal virgins at the Grand Shrine of Ise, Japan's most important Shinto shrine.
The skinny towering bamboos sway in the wind and the rustling of its leaves lends to a zen atmosphere. The bamboo trees are so close that the leaves rustling in the wind coordinate to make a peaceful melody.
The bamboos grow densely only letting sunshine filter as the leaves are rocked by the wind which set up the stage for beautiful photos.
Come early so its is less crowded for better shots. After all Arashiyama Bamboo forest is one of the most photographed sites in the world.
Combine your visit to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest with other attractions in the area like the traditional cormorant fishing practiced along the Hozu River, the Tenryuji Temple, and the train ride.

Arashiyama, Rokuonji Kyoto Biking Experience
We decided to bike to the bamboo forest and Arashiyama from our Air BnB which was about 5 miles away. After 1 mile of biking, we stopped because it was raining too hard and we decided to take the street car. It turned out to be a great idea because we would have been drenched. Arashiyama and the sound of the water made the area very relaxing... not to mention the good food and coffee. We trained back and picked up our bikes to visit Rokuonji. We then biked back and ended our day walking around Kyoto looking for dinner.

Roujiya will make you feel right at home in the heart of Kyoto.
Roujiya is a cozy and modern (yet distinctly Japanese) family-owned guest house in the heart of Kyoto.

We offer fun and inviting lodgings in the heart of a tranquil Kyoto neighborhood - not a round-the-clock party. We aspire to provide guests with a uniquely Kyoto-style ambience, and peaceful relaxation is the order of the day. Our evenings are calm and restful. So we have curfews and bedtimes, because of being in a traditional area where neighboring buildings are mere inches away, we ask guests to keep noise levels down, especially after dark. Arashiyama Onsen Kyoto
Arashiyama Onsen Saishikino Yado Hanaikada is a Japanese traditional ryokan. You could absorb real Japanese style atomosphere during your stay.
The Hanaikada ryokan is close to the Togetukyo Bridge, where Katsura river rushes past. The Togetsukyo Bridge is Arashiyama's well known, central landmark. Many small shops, restaurants and other attractions are found nearby, including Tenryuji Temple, Arashiyama's famous bamboo groves and pleasure boats that are available for rent on the river.
Arashiyama is a pleasant, touristy district in the western outskirts of Kyoto. The area has been a popular destination since the Heian Period (794-1185), when nobles would enjoy its natural setting.
One of the most enjoyable and convenient ways to travel around the Sagano area is by rental bicycle, which are available for around 1000 yen near the train stations. Cycling through rural residential areas and past fields while traveling between temples can be one of the most enjoyable parts of a visit to Arashiyama. There is also an attractive preserved town area near the Nenbutsuji Temple. Departing from near the JR Kameoka Station, the Hozu River Boat Tour is a leisurely two hour trip that takes passengers down the winding Hozu River to the Togetsukyo Bridge. The trip passes by the forested mountainsides along the river. The boats seat 25 people.
The Hanaikada ryokan will welcome you with a gorgeous Japanese cuisine dinner using seasonal ingredients which chief directly get in the central market every day. All cuisines are offer by a Japanese style dishes.
Arashiyama hot spring is only open-air bath in Kyoto to see the Ogura mountain view. In 2009, a part of the open-air baths was remodeled and those were produced by famous Japanese style artist.
5 minutes walk from Hankyu or Kyoufuku Arashiyama station. (Arashiyama station is only 20 minutes from Kyoto station.)
5 minutes by Taxi from JR Sagano Arashiyama Station
Rates are based on double occupancy. Charges for extra adults may apply and will be due directly to the hotel.
Yoshimine-dera, a temple in the mountains - Kyoto in Autumn
Yoshimine-dera temple in the west side of Kyoto is often missed by tourists. All we can say is you should definitely plan a visit if you're ever in Kyoto during the Foliage season! The view from this temple is just amazing, steals our little breath away every single time. Because we love all things autumn, we went up Yoshimine-dera to soak in the beautiful Autumn Foliage. As you can see, we were surrounded by a sea of red. The best time to view the Foliage at Yoshimine-dera is mid to late November.
This beautiful temple was made in the year 1029 as a personal retreat for priest Gesan. The temple is also dedicated to Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy. To get to Yoshimine-dera, you can either take the JR Kyoto line to Muko-machi Station or the Hankyu Kyoto line to Higashimuko Station. From either of these, take the #66Hankyu Bus to Yoshimine-dera.
One way to spend an afternoon in Kyoto pt 1 | Travel | Kansai | Japan |
How to spend an afternoon in Kyoto!
If you are short on time, and only have a few hours to spend in Kyoto, these 3 things are one of my recommendations. There are of course tons of things to do in Kyoto, so I will be headed back there to explore more.
Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine - Take the JR Nara line from Kyoto station to Inari. You will immediately see the entrance to Fushimi Inari Taisha when you get out of the station. Visiting is free!
Ramen Sen no Kaze - Take the Hankyu Kyoto line to Kawaramachi station. From there, pull up your phone and make use of your pocket WiFi. It might be tricky to find, but you'll get there eventually! Glorious ramen, and they have all the different versions, such as Tonkotsu, Shoyu, Miso, Shio Ramen, and they also got rice and gyoza if you need something more with your beers!
Nishiki Market - Just a short walk from Sen no Kaze. Fantastic walking street with many souvenirs, tax free shops, food stalls, restaurants, izakayas, pubs and more. You can almost buy anything here!
I know that this is merely scratching the surface of the things that Kyoto has to offer, and I intend to go back to see the castle, monkeys, and many more shrines!
